Having stayed at the Bird House twice, once in the winter and again last month, I feel qualified to render an opinion. The location is ideal for anyone visiting Biltmore Estate or adjacent Biltmore shopping village - all are a 15 minute walk. Downtown Asheville is less than 10 minutes by car. Aside from great location, the house is ideal for 2-4 guests. Two bedrooms, one with television, both are very comfortable. Large amount of closet space too. One bathroom presents limitations particularly during shower or bath times if the group is large. Kitchen is more than adequate and washer/dryer come in handy. Appliances are newer and in good working order. The house is secure and located in a nice neighborhood. Grounds/Yard are lacking and minimal which is only an issue for those with children since the house is situated relatively close to two intersecting roads with some traffic. Otherwise, I'd give this a strong 4 out of 5 stars with location and comforts being a 5 but overall downgraded due to the limitations of one bathroom (for groups of 4 or more) and lack of a suitable yard being the only negatives. The owner is responsive to any needs and local and our one call for help resulted in a fix next day (i.e., internet router / cable tv issue). I plan to go back. - Bob B.

Thank you for sharing your house with us. We enjoyed our days hiking and exploring and were grateful to have a welcoming place to come back to and relax. We found the kitchen fully accommodating to prepare our meals, we even grilled outside! The fenced in yard and the screened porch was perfect for our dog to enjoy time off his leash! Very quiet neighborhood. We booked with short notice, owner very easy to work with - thanks Ellen!
Wonderful house in Asheville!
October 31, 2012
I just spent 10 days in the Bird House and recommend it highly. It's a charming house in a lovely old neighborhood, with friendly neighbors and lots of winding streets where I walked my dogs. The house is comfortable and very nicely decorated. (Yes, the furniture in the living room is somewhat 60s-ish but don't let that deter you!) While I feared that the bird motif would be a little overwhelming it actually turned out to be charming -- my daughter and a close friend visited and we all enjoyed finding birds of all feathers in nooks and crannies throughout the house. If you visit look for the bird in an usual place in the kitchen! The location couldn't be better. Downtown Asheville is no more than 10 minutes away in one direction, and the Biltmore Estate is 10 minutes away in the other direction. Since it was Fall I didn't use the screened-in porch much but can imagine it would be very pleasant in warmer weather. I rented the house for myself and for my two visitors and was quite comfortable. I think a single person, a couple, two couples or a family with 2 children would be very happy here. The futon in the living room would also work for 2 additional people. All in all, I will *definitely* come back!
A Comfy Place to Nest

I celebrated my 60th birthday nesting at The Bird House! Although we ate our meals out, the kitchen seemed well appointed. The 2 bedrooms were attractive and comfortable and shared an updated bathroom. We especially loved the screened porch where we spent much of the weekend with a glass of wine and a book. Cheerful house in a lovely area of Asheville.

Rented the bird house for a week in july of this year for myself, my mom, and a family friend. The location is convenient, just blocks off the city's main artery, and the neighborhood is wooded and peaceful (a car would go by every 20 minutes or so). The house is just right: friendly and charming but not fussy. We fell in love with the big screened porch, and I spent several wonderful evenings lying on the Mayan hammock, listening to the cicadas or to the rain falling. The owner is a doll, so pleasant and helpful—she really wants you to have a great vacation and is happy to share her knowledge of the area. I recommend this place for singles, couples, or families, and my little terrier had a fine time, too. Staying at the Bird House was a great experience.
Everything you need. Just walk in the door.

We actually stayed January, February & March escaping the very harsh winter of 2012 LOL from Indiana. We (animals included) were welcome with open arms. Any concern or question was taken care of immediately. The location, especially during the winter was perfect. One mile from the Biltmore, downtown, hospitals, malls, village shopping and access to 40 or 240 was in minutes including my physical therapy Y visits. Price inculded all inclusive so; no worries. We felt like we were at home immediately, especially the small ones. The front porch was a big hit even in the winter watching the family/animal friendly (quiet) neighborhood with many neighbors stopping by to chat with their own four legged friends while outside enjoying a front, side and rear fenced yard with the mild winter we all had. Suggestions on special places to see, eat, enjoy visitings was available at the home or by phone from the best landlady possible anytime. Even with 3 months one can not even touch all the things availalbe in this lovely area and famous city of Asheville. With limited disabilities I did not have to even step up once if I didn't need to with the many ways to access this lovely historic bungalow. You will think your in a different room all the time always seeing something different with the Bird House decor. Faimly and friends came to visit during our stay with some extending their stay enjoying the experience. Hoping to return often.

We had a great time in the Bird House for New Year's. Five minute drive to the Biltmore estate and minutes from downtown Asheville as well. A quiet place for couples to get away and relax and enjoy Asheville, NC.

My family and I stayed at the Birdhouse - which was a comfortable and cozy place to stay - not to mention the great location to the Biltmore and all the other area attractions. The fenced in yard was great to have with two small dogs. We would definately come back and stay in the Birdhouse again. -
Too knickknacky, not clean.
November 4, 2010
I wish the owner had spent a little more money on necessities and less on birdhouse knickknacks. The furniture seemed like it was on its last legs, especially the king bed. The windows were thin which made it chilly and noisy. The twin beds were pushed up against the windows so we heard helicopters and the train all hours of the night. People sped through the neighborhood. I could have stayed in the city for all that! I'm not sure how clean the house was. I found a used toothbrush in the bathroom and the bed linens had stains all over them. I do not recommend this house for small children as there are breakable objects everywhere! Staying at the Birdhouse felt more like staying at nutty Aunt Sue's cluttered house than at a mountain cottage.

What a delightful place to stay during our visit to town! Located within just a few minutes' drive of downtown, the UNCA campus, Biltmore Village, etc. but in a quiet, charming neighborhood. The house was comfy and furnished with everything we might need. Especially loved the porch and the hammock. So glad we decided not to stay in a fussy little B&B! This will be the first place I look to book on my future trips to Asheville.

nice stay at birdhouse
January 3, 2008
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the birdhouse. It was a comfortable space, including everything that we needed to cook, chill out and make ourselves at home. Extra bonus for pets: a screened porch and fenced backyard. Great location as well.
The Bird House has been so wonderful! It truly made us feel like we had a home during our time here in Asheville, rather than simply being visitors. Our favorite activity has been sitting out on the porch in the evenings… nothing is more peaceful. Thanks!
Emily and Ryan Lucas, Athens, GA
I like The Bird House a lot. [a sweet drawing accompanied]
Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. The location was perfect, the decorations in the house were great. Thank you again and good luck in the future with your home.

We drove into the lovely neighborhood and then found a wonderful, quaint home! The 4-leggeds and I enjoyed the yard and porch long before venturing in. Once inside, Bill, Bucky, Bat-Girl and I loved it! And the rest of our stay was perfect. Thanks so much -

We're cuckoo about The Bird House! [drawing accompanied]
Ellen, it was such a pleasure staying in your cottage. I am so glad to we got to meet as well. Every detail here has been considered - we lacked for nothing and felt completely at home. As a woman with only 3 more weeks of pregnancy left to go (hopefully!), I was especially grateful for the comfortable bed and the air conditioning!
We liked Kenilworth so much, we've made an offer on a house here! Hopefully, we'll be neighbors soon.
Take care and thank you again for the lovely accommodations.

Words hardly seem enough to thank you for the gift of time at your Bird House. The time it awarded us to spend with our friends across the street was wonderful!
May you be blessed a thousand times over for this gift to us. I know God will Bless your generosity!

Another lovely stay at The Bird House - and this time there were THREE of us - ZEKE has arrived! Thank you so much for the hooded towel - it's great! I am sure it will be with us for many, many years.
We are looking forward to being neighbors, and we'll be back in touch soon.
Thank you again for providing such wonderful accommodations.

Ellen, it was a pleasure meeting you the day we arrived - thank you for a lovely time at The Bird House. Your home is beautiful and we were right at home. We hope to come back and stay again. The days were breezy and the evenings cool - just how we like it. Thanks for allowing us to bring Mattie, our 9 year old Sheltie - she loved it, too. We went for many walks.

The Bird House is so comfortable and quiet (…and the night before we left it snowed!).
Great location, too! We had a nice surprise of fireworks in town last night [drawings of fireworks]. Thanks!

Had a great Christmas here!
Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you, beautiful Bird House - you saved us! When we arrived in Asheville we discovered that our reserved accommodations were a disaster. What a blessing that this charming home was available for our babies (Jack and Grizzly) and us! We were close to everything and felt so sheltered and at home here… we treated it like our own (and you should, too!). We've added a book to the hallway shelf - I adored Boychiks in the Hood!) and hope to return to visit again, perhaps in the summer (it was chilly for New Year's Eve)! Thank you again and again. May God bless and keep you, and bless the lovely home you so generously share with others. See you next time!

I came here for a retreat and it was like coming home to an old friend. I'm so glad I got to meet you. The Bird House will always be a treasured memory for me and my dog.

Ellen, thanks so much for a lovely stay in Asheville! We have only been married 7 months (still newlyweds) and needed a weekend trip alone. We were also glad that you allowed us to bring our basset hound Dixie; she also loved it here! Your home is so adorable and so much nicer than staying at a hotel; we were able to make ourselves at home. Thanks for everything!
Paula, Michael Gordon and Dixie
We were comfortable and had a great time. The Bird House certainly is central to all the sights and entertainment in Asheville. Many thanks!
What a delight! By day I had such fun exploring the beautiful surroundings, then by night I enjoyed every comfort of home in “my” cozy Bird House!

Thanks so much for sharing your home with us. We're here for the horse shows at Biltmore Estate and it was great to have such a comfortable and convenient place to stay while visiting Asheville.
Hopefully, we will see you again next year.

Thanks for having such a well-maintained, clean and comfortable house. We had no idea what we were getting into and we felt real blessed with this place. It was nice to stay in a house and have room with our family.

What a wonderful place to perch! Comfy, extremely well-equipped, and convenient location. Thanks for donating the 2-night getaway to the Arthur Morgan School auction. It was just what the doctor ordered… The Bird House was terrific, thanks! Couldn't have been any better.
Best to you -

We had a great time staying here - everything was cozy and beautiful, and we were happy to not only wake up here (the bed is very comfortable) but to return here each night. Cedar the dog was as happy as we were - great back yard, and wonderful neighborhood for walks.
Thanks for everything - from directions for both couples in our party, to a fantastic place to stay in Asheville!

Well, we can't thank you enough for allowing us to stay so long at The Bird House. It has been a wonderful temporary home for us, as we were waiting for our new house to be completed. Thank you so much for being so helpful and flexible with all of our changes, etc. We really enjoyed our time here in your very comfortable and warm home. I loved the area, the proximity to Biltmore House and Village, and being able to get down town so quickly and easily, and having the little back yard for Noah was a godsend. With many thanks, hugs,
Claudette and Mike Wren, & Noah-the-dog, Houston, TX
PS 8:00 o'clock on the dining room clock is definitely “our song!!”
