Reviews for this vacation home rental in Chatham, Massachusetts
July 25, 2011
We rented this condo, thinking that the price (compared to bigger, cheaper, much nicer houses more remote from the coast) would be justified by having the beach just a few steps down the lawn. Well, first of all, at high tide there is no beach! The few yards of sand left are way too close to the marina and littered by concrete and rusty iron junk. Some black stuff in the water, too, that might have been ship's oil. Suspicious also, that nobody else went into that water except with their feet. We ended up driving to the other beaches every day, exactly what we tried to avoid by renting this condo. Also the "beach" and water are not suitable for small children, whatever the lady from the agency will tell you. We didn't even see any adults in the water. As for the condo itself, it was allover clean enough and the owners certainly make an effort by providing guide books and tips for restaurants and the like. However, the condo doesn't keep its promises. The "AC" means two free standing, not very powerful units that are incredibly noisy, so that you can only choose between not sleeping because of the noise or because of the heat... The sofa cushion covers and bathroom floor mat are in dire need of a thourough washing and the gas grill burner was so caked shut from previous users that it didn't work. A burger needed 30 minutes to get to a pale medium done consistency. The patio chairs were so rusty that we ruined our clothes with rust stains until we switched to the plastic chairs that they luckily also provided. The third twin bed is not for claustrophobics - it's in some sort of closet under the roof, with the ceiling two feet above your head and no window or anything like that. And lastly somebody should go through with a screw driver and new screws and tighten all those towel bars and door hinges... Chatham is a beautiful town, worth a visit. And it's expensive. That considered, maybe the off season price of $800 would be justified. $1500? Don't waste your money. We left a day early out of frustration and because we badly needed some good sleep.
