Area Info
There is a lot to do on Dauphin Island:
A. The Holiday Isle Aquarium. This is below you, on the first floor. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab & Estuarium maintains the aquarium. All of the fishes are from the Gulf of Mexico. Some of the fish are pictured and identified at the top of the aquarium. When fish become too large, they are released.

B. Walk to Pelican Island. This is the best thing to do on the island, IMHO. Pelican Island and Pelican Bay are visible to the east from the condo balcony. It starts about ¼ mile to the east (to your left).

C. A visit to Audubon Bird Sanctuary. This is located on the east side of the island about three miles past the stop sign off of Bienville Boulevard, on your right. There is parking for about ten cars. You will pass through forests and marshes and your ultimate goal is to make it to the beach. There are several routes to the beach. I don’t think it is possible to get lost.

Dauphin Island has been named one of the top four locations in North America for viewing spring and fall migrations. The Sanctuary consists of 137 acres of maritime forest, marshes, and dunes, including a lake, a swamp, and a beach. Recently, the 3 mile trail system within the Sanctuary has been designated as a National Recreational Trail.

D. Fort Gaines. This is an impressive fort, museum and shop, located on the eastern tip of the island. $6 entry fee, $ 4 for children. It is the site of the Battle of Mobile Bay during the War of Northern Aggression (1861-65).
