Great location, Condo needs overhaul

January 10, 2015

The location is astounding and the view is spectacular along this rugged coast of Puerto Rico but the unit we rented was worn out from lack of maintenance. At some point in its past, it must have been a dream spot, now it has rusted pipes, non working or non existent window cranks, sliding doors that have to be lifted from the track to open, insufficient kitchen supplies. It was never one big thing, just an accumulation of evidence that this place had seen much better days. To start, the air conditioner was broken in the master bedroom which wouldn’t have been a problem except the security/storm door on the sliding glass door was also not working and only one of two windows cranked open. The result was a hot, airless three nights before repairs could be scheduled. The mattress was lumpy broken down and smelled like BO. The towels were bleach stained and had hairs on them. The pictures of the master also don’t show the large owners cabinet taking up most of the passing room along one side of the bed. The washer/dryer in the kitchen is nice to have when you are a few weeks into a trip – until you realize that the dryer vents into a cabinet in the kitchen with a sign that says to open the cabinet door when dryer is in use. To get good airflow though the unit, you really need to open up the windows. Half of all the windows were either missing their handles or more often the cranks were rusted shut. In addition, the drinking glasses were hung over the dryer vent cabinet so all of them covered in lint. Everything felt like it needed a good scrubbing –way beyond what the turnover cleaning crew would be able to accomplish in the few hours they probably have to get ready for the next guest. It would be easy to throw the cleaners under the bus and blame them but it is obvious that this unit needs an overhaul to continue claiming its 5 star ratings. At this point you are asking yourself, why so many great reviews? Based on the number of glowing letters to the owner in the book left on the coffee table that had “dad”, “pop” or some such other familial title, our guess is that the online reviewers had similar connections to the owner. The owner did seem concerned that things weren’t working but our vacation was spent waiting for and letting in repair people instead of exploring this part of PR like we had planned. We tried to move but the holiday week was booked all across PR. We ended up leaving early. Very disappointing...
