Description of the Pahoa vacation cottage rental
Situated on three acres, Haven is located 250 feet from the main house surrounded by tall Eucalyptus trees, a wide spreading monkey pod tree, an herb garden and numerous other coconut trees and other kinds of fruit trees. The Lava Rock Hale is round in shape and is totally off the grid, relying on solar power for electricity and a gravity fed water system. The outdoor shower can be described as a "gravity fed solar hot water shower", it is truly one of the features that makes it wonderfully unique from everything else. There is a great covered picnic table for eating, barbequeing and general relaxation. A bathroom house with flushing toilet is some 70 feet away from the hale. The rock house itself is a organic circular design with a comfortable queen size bed, a full working kitchen with a small refrigerator, ceiling fan and a propane stove top. A TV/DVD player with DVD's and some books and books about Hawaii are also included for your convenience. Snorkling gear and beach towels are included with the rental. This is truly one of the great and unusual places to stay on the Big Island, as all outdoor natural sounds are not muffled by walls and windows and should not be missed. We invite you to stay here at the "Adventurous Lava Rock Hale", a true value of rural Hawaii. Aloha!

Area Info
Sunny Kapoho is an apt name for the exploration of Puna. Swimming spots such as Green Lake, Vacationland tidepools, the geothermal hot ponds and Pohoiki beach park are all minutes from our Lava Rock Hale. The red road is 10 miles of scenic driving through winding forests and ocean coast line. The ongoing lava flow into the ocean in Kalapana is some 25 minutes away and the everchanging way of how the lava flows is an ongoing and inspirational tribute to "Pele" Goddess of the Volcanoes. Groceries can be purchased in Pahoa town and there are many restaurants to eat at in Pahoa, including "Local", american, chinese, thai, japanese, mexican, italian, pizza etc... Sunny Kapoho is more country and its slowed down lifestyle is attractive to many people. There is plenty of natural beauty here to be had. While hiking, biking, swimming or driving, you may see wild pigs, soaring hawks, scurrying mongooses and many varieties of birds such as owls, mynah's and doves are just some of the sights. Our testimonials give a great insight into what it's like to stay here. Go to iks.mysite. for more info and an area map and directions to the Lava Rock Hale.

Plesant Stay at Lava Rock Hale

February 14, 2015

As one can see from the photos, Lava Rock Hale is a unique, special place. It is well supplied and maintained, and very clean. The refrigerator is small and has no freezer as it runs off solar power. Diane's original art on the walls added to the nice atmosphere. The outdoor shower was a treat, and completely enclosed so private. They have snorkel gear to borrow as well as a decent choice of DVDs to watch on the little TV. We used some of their spinach in our dinner and it was so good! We highly recommend this listing.

Love Lava Rock Hale

Eric and Diane are wonderful hosts...even when we didn't actually get to see them. the house is wonderful, comfortable and complete with all the amenities (including flashlights, coffee and ceiling fan). The grounds are beautiful! The coqui frogs are not deafening, but instead provide an occasional treble note to the birdsong.

Hale Heaven

March 1, 2014

It had been quite a while between making our reservation at the Lave Rock Hale and our arrival, so I was nervous that it may not be as good as I remembered. It wasn't - it was far better! Eric and Diane are incredibly welcoming, yet not imposing in any way. They were polite, informative, and very friendly. The Hale was perfect in every way. The rough unimproved road leading to the property makes it even better. It was quiet, well decorated, roomy, artsy, and fun. We especially liked the very complete kitchen with the propane burner stove as many such rentals give you only a microwave and we prefer to actually cook. The shower was fantastic and don't be put off by the "out house." It may not be connected to the main hale, but it is a full bathroom and adds to the experience. I can't recommend the Lave Rock Hale highly enough for those looking for something well off the beaten path.

Utterly relaxing retreat.

October 4, 2013

We stayed here after a week spent on the Kona side ,to experience a kick back different atmoshphere, and it was.The owners Eric and Diane were very helpful, polite and discreet and the location was lush, green and restful.A very comfy bed, ample cooking facilities and the solar shower was amazing(my skin felt like butter due to the rainwater used).Once we got over only having D.V .D's and having to put the radio on for music we were very content. My husband who runs a very stressful business and never lets down, was in a coma listening t o the little frogs and birds.Excellent value for money,I would recommend to anyone !!!Thank you folks ,we hope to meet again some day!

Lava Rock Heaven!

August 13, 2013

It was so hard to leave our beautiful hosts, Eric & Diane, and the incredible place they built with their own hearts and hands! In fact, we had to say goodbye twice! - we were only gone a few hours before we decided there was nowhere we'd rather be for the remainder of our vacation, so we called them up, asked if we could come back and canceled our other plans! I felt so blessed to have found them on the internet - it was an experience that exceeded all of our expectations. It is the most unique, artful, peacefully serene, and spirited place, I wish I were there now! I miss Horsie & the dogs, Kismet & Mulan, the gorgeous outdoor shower, even the frog songs at night under the starriest sky I've ever seen... and, I miss my new dear friends, Diane & Eric! They embody the true meaning of Aloha and it is reflected in everything they do. If this place at all interests you, do not hesitate - you will not be disappointed! The place is very clean, the bed is very comfortable, and all of the little details (like Diane's paintings) make it extra special. I didn't turn on the tv once, because it seemed like a distraction from the beauty all around us. We were in want of nothing! They even had snorkel gear for us to use, and the best advice on where to go and when.

WOW!!! We have both traveled to many cities and countries around the globe and NEVER have stayed in such an amazing place as Lava Rock Hale. Eric and Dianne are wonderful hosts! They made us feel so welcomed and comfortable - amazing ohana! The round house is one of the most special places on Earth! So peaceful, beautiful, truly magical. It is truly a work of art! Eric and Dianne have such love for the aina (the land) and for their sweet, magical animal friends, especially the horse! What a sweetheart! It is truly a haven, a home away from home. Kapoho is such a great spot - especially Green Lake, the tidal pools, the thermal pool - also great location to visit Kilaeau. We felt so blessed, so fortunate to have found Eric, Dianne and Lava Rock Hale. We will be back! The most special experience - ever. You will not hear a "man-made" sound while staying there and you will be touched by the aloha spirit.

Big Island Haven

March 7, 2012

Friendly hosts, an inspiring hand-built house, and a beautiful and interesting location on the Big Island made our stay at the Lava Rock Hale a memorable experience. The house itself is mostly open to the weather (through screens), and features a simple kitchen, with an outdoor shower and outdoor (flush) toilet. Taking a shower in the artistically designed outdoor shower -- with flowers growing at your feet -- was a treat. The house provided a great base from which to explore snorkeling, geothermally heated tidal pools, the funky town of Pahoa, endless lava fields and the thick forest growth that covers uncultivated land on this part of the Island. We look forward to returning!

I stayed at Lava Rock Hale for only one night and that was far too short. It is the most peaceful, wonderful place to stay, it felt like paradise. The Hale has everything you need and is very comfortable. Diane and Eric are wonderful hosts and are gracious and very welcoming. They are there is you need anything. I will return to Lava Rock Hale and spend much more time there. It is in a wonderful location to explore this part of the island from, so much is close by. Thank you Diane and Eric for sharing your beautiful piece of the island. The horse and the dogs are a special bonus.

Thank you, Eric and Dianne, for sharing your lovely slice of paradise. The round cottage located on your farm was a peaceful retreat close to the ocean and other gorgeous nature. Even though the cottage is off the grid, we still had all the conveniences like hot showers and a fully functioning kitchen. I highly recommend this wonderful vacation spot.

What an amazing place!! We spent our last 9 days on the Big Island at the Lava Rock Hale, and did not want to leave. The hale is beautiful, the property is spectacular, the owners are wonderful, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. This totally off grid property was simple and effecient, decorated beautifully, spotlessly clean, providing everything we needed. Including filtered water, flush toilet, a beautiful outdoor shower with solar hot water, a french press for Kona coffee, friendly dogs, a horse to pick cane grass for, massage therapy, on property friuts, a kitchen herb garden, near everything...but totally secluded and private. If you don't book this place, we will. We are planning to return next year!!

Adventure Lava Hale "WOW"

October 23, 2009

Our stay at the Adventure Lava Hale was amazing! The Hale was on beautiful grounds in a tropical jungle. The Hale was hand made by Eric and Diane with love and devotion which is felt throughout. The outdoor shower was such a treat :) Off the grid was an adventure, but such an incredible experience. It has inspired us to want to try and live the same way. Eric and Diane ( the owners ) are an amazing couple. They are full of knowledge on the Island and all the wonderful places to see.Diane was an outstanding tour guide and showed us some of the most incredible sites we have ever seen. We felt so welcome and at home on their property. Their horse, and doggies were an added treat! We feel that we have made some new friends in our Lava Hale stay. We would recommend the Adventure Lava Hale for all those looking for the non-traditional stay. If you want to experience the "real-Hawaii" and not get caught up in a tourist trap this is the spot for you. You will have all the peace and quiet you want. The sounds, smells and sights around you are truly beautiful! The crouque frogs will sing you to sleep and you will wake to amazing sunrises coming through your screened windows. We miss it all ready and can't wait to come back!!!

Eric & Diane,
We're so happy to have found such a gorgeous hale! It is very well built and stocked with everything you would need. Also very comfortable and we couldn't ask for a better place to stay here in Kapoho. The stars at night were amazing and we saw the longest most beautiful shooting star*. We've had a lovely 4 days exploring Puna and are so happy to have found you and the Lava Hale! Thanks for a great space, great suggestions and being so dang friendly!I wish we had more time to spend here, but in our short time we managed to see the tidepools, warm springs, flowing lava, the new black sand beach and more. Take care and all the best, Sara & Audra, Portland, Ore. 4/14-4/19

Talofa E.D.,
We can't say enough about you folks, pooches, Ikani and of course Hale Haven. As mentioned Kat picked your Hale specifically because of its similarity to our offgrid yurt. Nothing quite like feeling at home away from home. Hanging with you was an added bonus. Thanks much for sharing theraputic Green Lake and the hill of light! It's tranquil beauty will not soon or ever be forgotten. Your advice on the neighborhood was invaluable and the hard work invested into your piece of paradise did not go unnoticed. The international lawn games with your comrades were a hoot. Please come visit us and the Golden Plovers up north in the land of the midnight sun. Alofa Tele, Kat and Don 2/17-2/23/10

Eric and Diane,
Thank you for sharing your Haven with us. It was wonderful to experiance the outdoors(noises, smells, tempertures) while being safely sheltered in this trul;y inspired creation of yours. We found everything we needed inside. The wonderful shower and the warm breeze coming into the Haven plus the happy noises of all the creatures around us were my favorite parts. Everything was so well planned, clean and soulful. You really are providing a service to everyone fortunate enough to run accross Lava Rock Haven. Thank you for the avocados, the tsunami warning, all the sightseeing advice and for your generous hospitality. We hope to see you again someday. Aloha! Hilary and K.C., 2/24-3/1/10

Dear Diane and Eric,
You have without a doubt created a "Haven". I feel so fortunate to have found you and the Lava Rock Hale. From the first view online to my first moment here , I knew I'd found a real gem of a place to stay while I photographed the lava flow. Kapoho is a special place and your home is obviously built with love. I feel the Hale's loving embrace when I'm here and it's nurturing energy helped ground me as I worked on a very intense project. I really enjoyed the hospitality Eric showed me. It was nice to come back to my temporary home and be able to have a new friend to talk with. My next time here at the hale I'll be sure to schedule when Diane is here.
It wasn't just the human contact which made my stay here. The beautiful dogs and horse greeted me regularly, making me feel very welcome indeed. I wish you the best and will miss you. Ian Russel, Davis,Calif. 8/3-8/20/09

We searched long and hard to find the perfect place to stay on the Hilo side- we came accross your Lava Rock Hale. We knew it was the one! And it didn't fail to impress. We can't believe you built it yourselves! The Hale is truly beautiful and in a perfect location. It was so nice to get away from the city noises and fall asleep listening to the sounds of nature. The outdoor shower is perfectly described as "refreshing" and I wish I had one of my own! We also loved being able to go right up to the horse and pet him- he is so friendly! Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality and we would love to come back again! Caleb and Stacy, Raleigh,NC, N.Canton, OH (Honolulu) 8/3/09

Diane & Eric,
Thanks so much for your hospitality at Lava Rock Hale. My six days flew by. The setting is gorgeous and the Hale had everything I needed. I loved listening to the rain come in from far off. And thanks for the warning about the horse the first night, he definetly would have scared the bejeezes out of me if I hadn't known. It was great fun to watch him slurp up the last of the papayas you left. Aloha!

Thank you for all your time and wonderful suggestions. I suspect I'll never forget the swim in green lake, fishing off rocks w/waves crashing below or the bicycle rides through such wonderful terrain. There are so many wonderful touches/benefits to staying here. Thank you for making it such a memorable experiance. M.G. Howard, British Columbia, Canada. 5/18-6/14/09
