Description of the Pretty Marsh vacation cottage rental
Charming, rustic waterfront cottage that can accommodate two people comfortably (three people less so; third bed is a fold-up) on the "quiet side" of the island available for weekly rentals in the summer (click on Availability tab to see what weeks are available; calendar updated in March for following summer). Front porch 50 yards from the shoreline with views of water and Bartlett Island. Rocky beach. Perfect for exploring coves in your kayak. Shore access is via a natural path, and may not be suitable for those unsteady on their feet, but a public dock easily accessible at end of driveway, within 200 yards of cottage. Sorry, no pets allowed.

Main room with cathedral ceiling and wood burning stove. Equipped galley kitchen. Bathroom with tub/shower. Separate bedroom with twin beds which can convert to king size, large closets and two bureaus. Acadia hiking trails, antique shopping, fresh water swimming, Beech Mountain Farm Market and Somesville all within a ten minute drive.

The cottage is part of a three-home property primarily occupied by three generations of family members who take pride in their ownership of this uniquely beautiful place. Please note there is a second rental house nearby on this property which sleeps 8 and may also possibly be rented to accommodate more people: Lookout Lodge (property number 51687; see link to the right). We've been making memories here for over 50 years, and invite you to share the experience.
Area Information
Mount Desert Island is famous as the hub of Acadia National Park and as an ideal summer vacation spot. Here is a description from the Wikipedia entry for Acadia National Park:
The town of Bar Harbor is located on the northeast corner of Mount Desert Island. Southwest Harbor, on the western side of the fjord Somes Sound, is well known for boat-building and fishing, and has the largest year-round population on Mount Desert Island. Northeast Harbor is known for its beautiful private "cottages" yet retains a small town atmosphere. The town of Tremont is home to Bass Harbor Head Light and is located on what locals refer to as the "quiet side" of the island. Cadillac Mountain, named after the French Explorer of the same name who went on to found Detroit, Michigan, is on the eastern side of the island. Its green, lichen-covered, pink granite summit is one of the first places in the United States to see the sunrise, making it a popular tourist attraction. Miles of scenic carriage roads were originally built by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. with great sensitivity to the trees and contours of the land. The mountains of Acadia National Park offer hikers and bicycle riders views of the ocean, island lakes, and pine forests.

Quiet, Beautiful location on The Narrows

August 19, 2015

The air smelled heavenly with firs and Hay Scented ferns. Usually it was so quiet that we could hear the popping exhale of seals and Harbor Porpoises breathing -- which is how we spotted them several times a day from the dock, or from a kayak we rented for the week. The occasional lobster boat was noisy, but not for too long. The nearby public dock had many kayaking groups going in and out, but that didn't make disturbing noise to us. The kitchen in the cabin was well equipped for one so small, and the two twin beds in the bedroom had been pulled together into one king size bed, in which we slept quite comfortably. Although the owners specify that renters can't use their dock and boats, we were able to put our kayak in from the property's rocky shore without using the dock, and there was sufficient space above the high tide line to secure it as well. We brought plenty of food with us, so were not bothered by grocery stores being so far away. There's a little charcoal grill which we used (no gas). About the only downside to this great little cabin is the lack of internet connection. But the cell coverage including data on my AT&T plan was fine. We were thrilled with the quiet and the comfort, the wildlife we could see from this location (better than Southwest Harbor and Bernard where we also stayed in the next few weeks), and the pretty water view from the porch. There were a few mosquitoes in the evenings, but hardly any during the daytimes. No A/C but we really didn't need it. Remarkably little litter given the proximity of the public dock. Felt peaceful and unspoiled. Bartlett Island (just across the Narrows, visible from this property) and the shoreline to the north of this property were great spots to kayak around, and in the early mornings, the water was very calm. We would definitely go back if we wanted to spend more time in Maine.

Little House Stay

July 18, 2011

From the moment we arrived we fell in love with our cabin and the surroundings. The Little House was everything we had hoped for. Watched lobster and mussel boats in morning and ate breakfast on our deck. hiked and biked in Acadia National Park during the day. Ate lobster most nights and returned to the cabin, listened to the loons, and enjoyed breezes as the windows are big and are screened so it was like having a screened porch. Last day as we were leaving, had a seal right in front of us. What a treat! Only thing bad was having to leave! Wonderful memory for my wife and myself.
