The Brown-Hawkins clan and a mighty fine time!
August 19, 2014
I have nothing bad to say about this house. It was just wonderful. It is an older house...so don't expect perfection but this was pretty darn close to it. It's laid out nicely for having that family time and for when you need some alone time. Open the windows and doors and let the air blow through! The only thing I can say negative about the house would be it doesn't have a yard for "playing children" but you have to remember....you're in the mountains the yard slants. But our 2 year old grandson still had a great time, we all did. There was 6 of us total and we had plenty of room! Wonderful, wonderful place. I can't wait to go back!
Excellent place to stay

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the McGuire house. We love the house inside and out. We spent a lot of our time outdoors at the river. The town was very small and conveniently located right outside of Boone and not far from the Parkway.
Beautiful, quaint antique house, lovely setting

My family of four stayed for two nights at the Historic McGuire House and are already hoping to return again soon. The location was absolute tranquility far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Furnishings were comfy and in great shape. House had all we needed and Todd is a wonderful area to explore. Lots to do in this part of NC. A very unique stay.

we drove you on Friday the 30th of Aug and spend 3 nights and 2 full days at the house. We found it to be a very homey, warm place and we enjoyed it a great deal. we do hope to go back again. it was a very nice, relaxing time in Todd we were able to go rafting down the river, take in all the surrounding activities that were offered in the area; the people were very friendly and the country side was beautiful we were able to go to all the surrounding areas within a few minutes which gave us a chance to branch out to Boone, Banner Elk, Linville and all they had a lot to offer as well. my Son being a photographer he was able to branch out on his own and take all types of pictures for display once we returned home, a lot of hiking. one way to sum it up was simply wonderful, we do hope to go back next year; the house itself was so clean and nicely furnished, it was like being home in a sense

Hope to Do This Again

Our family all enjoyed the Maguire House. Detailed instructions on getting there and getting in the house were given, so we made it with no problems, even late at night. It was so helpful to have river access literally across the street and tubes at the house to use. We weren't expecting tubing down the river to be part of our trip, but what a bonus! There was a very helpful binder at the house, too, with directions to local things to do. We wouldn't have found the trail to the waterfall without it. The house itself is very charming. There was plenty of room for our family of 6 to spread out and be comfortable. We were able to put the baby's pac--n-play in the room with the canopy bed and the window a/c unit made perfect white noise. He was close to mom and dad, but far enough from the commotion to sleep well. And he did! We were able to save a little money on our trip by cooking our own meals. Everything we needed (plus some things we hadn't expected) was there: colander, cheese grater, oil for the pan, measuring cups and spoons. The house is very old and not quite level anymore. There was a large exercise ball in the upstairs closet. We enjoyed rolling it around the floor and seeing which way it would go. Really, the house is just charming. We couldn't figure out the upstairs television though. It might be helpful to have some instructions on DVD/satellite viewing. I felt that the location and proximity to attractions was great. It took a few minutes to get anywhere, but not 30-45 minutes as I expected, more like 15-30. It really was not far at all to Boone. One caution: we could not get cell phone coverage inside the house. We needed to call the zip line company at one point and the cell phone wouldn't work. The the house phone also wouldn't work because for some reason it was a long distance number. But after my husband drove about a mile down the road, he had bars again and called them. The complimentary computer (and printer!) and internet access were really helpful. We will miss the Maguire House. We had a LOT of fun and we made some great memories with our kids. Thanks!

My Time at the Historical McGuire House
August 5, 2013
I really enjoyed my trip. The river was right in front of the house and so was a little park. The front porch had a great view of the river. I would take the kids to the park daily to play in the water. My older son had fun floating on his river rat inner tube on the river. It was in a nice location to enjoy a bike ride. The house was nice. It had a lot of its historic charm.

private back yard, nice river views, had fun weekend

This is one of my favorite places I have ever stayed. A half hour from Boone, on the New River (great for tubing and kayaking), and in a beautiful part of the mountains. Right across the street is a beautiful park and behind the house is the barn, chicken coop, and outhouse. The owners kindly leave tubes, bikes, and other stuff in a outbuilding beside the house. The house itself is beautiful, though not often used (we had to knock down some spiderwebs when walking through the house). The ceilings are very high and the doorways are very low. The entertainment room has tons of movies, magazines, and books, plus wi-fi and a computer. The upstairs beds were very comfortable. And the hot tub... ooh! It rocks. The only negatives were these: -The tiny water heater. You had to fill the tub halfway, wait 30 minutes for it to warm up, and then fill the other half -No central AC (but it wasn't really much of a problem). -The chairs at the bar in the kitchen were way too low. -The wi-fi signal was incredibly weak, and sometimes stopped working altogether. In conclusion, this place was great! Sure, it has its quirks, but they are hardly noticeable. I would totally recommend you stay here.
Thanks so much for the great review - we appreciate it! I am so glad that you enjoyed the house. We just love it and all the wonderful people in this beautiful pocket of the mountains! We will also look into getting taller stools :) - but we have installed more a/c units already.
Hope that you come back again, Connie

Perfect week in the NC mountains
July 8, 2010
We spent a perfect week 2 hours from Charlotte, 10 degrees cooler! Cyling was outstanding - plenty of hills and enough flat roads for a more leisurely ride. We rented kayaks right down the street to float down the New River. Hiking in Linville or Grandfather mountain was less than 1 hour away. Great restaurants in Boone and Blowing Rock.
Heaven in NC Hill Country
May 27, 2010
Shhh. It is the best kept secret. 2hrs. from Charlotte and you are heaven. With camera, bikes and paddles we are always in bliss while staying at the McGuire House and playing in Todd. What a beautiful spot overlooking the gentle river where we love kayaking and biking the country roads.
