Fall harvest marks the end of the growing season, but the beginning of the baking season! The baking season coincides with the time of year that most Americans do their holiday traveling to visit friends, family, and even foreign places. The tradition of bringing a baked good to your host or hostess can get tricky if you’re flying across the country. Check out these great American pies and cozy places to stay for your fall holiday travels.

If you’re headed to the Pacific Northwest, check out the Raspberry Pie at Dutch Mother’s Restaurant in Lynden, Washington. This pie ranks tops in the blogosphere with the “Round America” pie tour. For even more down-home American goodness, check out the view from this seaside vacation cottage nearby. Bald eagles landing by the waterside aren’t the only birder’s attraction. Herons and other interesting seabirds frequent the area.

Maine is certainly known for blueberries. Money Magazine ranks Moody’s Diner in Waldoboro tops for this All-American confection. Stay right down town in the Historic Reed Mansion and really feel like a State-of-Mainer. This bed and breakfast promises plenty of Maine blueberries on their menu. If you need to work off all that sugar energy, check out the Medomak River and all the water sports it has to offer: fishing, boating, kayaking, and more. The Mansion is conveniently located near the down town attractions, including the theatre. This B&B gives you the advantage of a professional host and hostess to help you get to everything you need, including that pie.

It’s an easy mistake to make: the best Key Lime pie should be from the Florida Keys. But Travel & Leisure Magazine reports otherwise. Chicago‘s Hoosier Mama Pie bakery is touted as where to find the perfect slice of this citrus cream confection. The great thing about a visit to Chicago is there is always a great place to stay on the waterfront. You can get views like this and be just a short walk to more of American’s finest attractions like  Navy Pier.

If these tasty treats have you hooked on pies, you’ll be pleased to know that there is, in fact, an American Pie Council. The APC holds an annual festival celebrating these baked goods. The next festival will be the 10th year in a row that pie lovers have flocked to Celebration, Florida for good eats.
