Escape the City, Play Outside

2 Flares 2 Flares ×

For urban and suburban families, outdoor play is often limited to city parks and rec centers. Walking trails are often paved, and biking often happens in painted lanes alongside traffic. Frequently, in your zeal to escape the city, you sit in bumper to bumper traffic in hopes of finding a spot of peace and quiet. But if your family is really looking to escape to the country, consider a mountain vacation rental home to put you right in the middle of the wild.

The Appalachian Mountains have much to offer families of all ages. This mountain cabin in North Carolina is a great example of rustic elegance and living amongst the wildlife. Details like the “tree-house” style deck place you into the forest. Wake up and look out the window to see trees engulfing the cabin, birds and small creatures foraging for their breakfast, and the misty sunrise that is so common in the Smokey Mountains. This is as removed from the city as you can get while still enjoying heating, air conditioning and indoor plumbing.

A trip to higher elevation creates great opportunities for hiking, rafting, and mountain biking. This cabin is situated near plenty of hiking trails giving your children the opportunity to go for an explore and let their imaginations run wild. Teach the kids to fish in the stream. Throw your catch on the grill if you’d like and give them a taste of rustic food.

However, if you miss the conveniences of the city during your stay, plenty of quaint towns throughout Appalachia have restaurants, night life, and shopping with an urban flare. The great spring weather means you can enjoy these urbanesque amenities outside. Check out patio dining, outdoor entertainment, and walkable shopping districts.

Want to dig deeper into rural life? Now is the season for berry picking. Strawberries in the southern Appalachians are just beginning to ripen. Show the family what a working farm really looks like and take a few quarts home. If hiking around the cabin has your family pumped for adventure, the Appalachian Trail runs very close by. Spend a day hiking along one of the world’s most famous mountain hiking trails and see what it’s all about.
