Get a Leg Up on Black Friday

2 Flares 2 Flares ×

It happens every year. The Friday after Thanksgiving, America’s stores are packed to the breaking point with shoppers getting great deals on everything. Even stuff nobody wants. So if being the best holiday gift giver is something you aspire to, go rogue. Turn holiday shopping into a vacation. Here are some great shopping ideas that will relax you out of the retail tailspin.

Souvenir Shops

Everyone has someone on the list who likes quirky stuff from places they haven’t been. If you’re headed to the beach, grab some quality sea shells from a local shop. They make a great addition to almost anyone’s decor. For something very special, turn those shells into planters in one simple step: add an air fern.

Head to Florida for the best in ocean front shopping. This yacht club vacation home is just right for being on the beach and where the retail is. Walk to local beach shops or head to the famous and large flea markets nearby. You’ll be less than 5 minutes from major shopping malls and outlet malls. Spend the afternoon on trendy Las Olas Boulevard to get your list whittled down.

Museums

If young people are on your list, get them educational gifts that are actually awesome. Museum gift shops have some of the coolest brain boosting toys and projects. Dinosaur science games are a big hit with elementary aged kids. Microscopes, crystal growing kits, insect identification jars, and many more natural world toys are easy to pick up at the museum.

The Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium is a great gifting stop if you’re vacationing in Vermont. This home near the Burke Mountain Ski Area is a cozy cabin with all the rustic features and cute country living you want to come home to after a hard day of brain expanding and shopping. The home is perfectly sized for the whole family to tag along on your museum shopping vacation. For a few more stocking stuffers, head to the 100 year old general store that’s just down the trail!

National Land Marks

Chances are, the guy on your list who has everything (no exaggeration) is a total history buff. National Parks, Historic Sites, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites are full of culture that you can bring home. Books and local crafts make a very unique gift. Or, give the gift of a vacation!

Skip the winter chill and head to the tropics for a shopping vacation that will warm you right up. The UNESCO site at Cuenca Ecuador is filled with street markets, parks, and local artisans. This condo in the center of it all is a perfect location for enjoying the history and culture. The historic buildings are the main attraction, so hunt for a local artist selling sketches or paintings. There’s a unique gift!
