When you think of northern California's wine country, the first phrase that pops into your head probably isn't "kid friendly." But if you've ever been to Healdsburg, you'll understand why the two things aren't mutually exclusive.

With a population of about 11,000, this wine country Mecca retains its small-town authenticity—combined with a healthy mix of modern life. Even after a hundred years, the 19th century plaza is still the center of town. Kids splash in the fountain while adults set out picnic blankets and relax to the sound of a Sunday afternoon concert. The occasional laptop can also be seen, since the square is a WiFi hotspot!

Surrounding the plaza is an interesting mix of up-scale boutiques, local artist's galleries, and excellent restaurants. Adults will appreciate fine dining at the Dry Creek Kitchen or something a bit more casual at the Bear Republic micro-brewery. Families with kids will love eating Mexican at El Farolito or ordering a sandwich at the Center Street Deli, completely decked out in 50's diner style.

Healdsburg—and Sonoma county—is also a great area for outdoor pursuits. You can rent bikes downtown and find yourself on a leisurely cycle through vineyards within minutes. Paddling a canoe down the Russian river (pack a lunch!) can be a great day-long adventure.

And if you're still longing for an afternoon of wine tasting? Drop the kids off at "The Raven," Healdsburg's community theatre and film center, and spend an hour or two touring local vineyards.
