Steeped in history older than our nation, Cape Cod first stretched out its crooked arm to pilgrim travelers on the Mayflower. Native Americans living on the peninsula helped the new arrivals survive that first harsh winter. Later, the area was transformed into a harbor for 19th century whaling ships - a life captured so vividly by Melville in his epic Moby Dick. Today, the Cape serves as a mild summer retreat for families, writers, artists, and nature lovers.
South of Cape Cod, the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard share a similar history, climate, and culture.
When to go: Late May - Early September
What to do: Tour lighthouses, explore bicycle trails, visit historic sites, eat fresh seafood (lobster, oysters, and clams), visit art galleries, play a round of golf (27 courses), take in a baseball game (they're free!), explore beaches and sand dunes, go whale-watching, and relax!
