Hi, I'm Deborah!
I was teaching piano in New York City when my husband decided to purchase Seabird Key (a private island in the Florida Keys.) I still think of myself as a piano teacher although I have not taught in several years. I became the reservations manager, marketing manager, accounting manager, office manager, and even decorator for Seabird Key. This happened when our son was born and I took a little time off from teaching. The demands of Island ownership grew as we started to operate Seabird as a business. As it is with most family owned small businesses, you tend to wear many hats. So, I remain active in the music community while working away to keep Seabird Key organized and well managed. I have a tendency to take-on more community volunteer work than I can manage. I've served on the board of our local homeless assistance center for 15 years and continue to find that a most rewarding commitment.
Thankfully, Seabird has a great on-site operations manager, Jeff Davis. He takes care of the property while I run the office.
As for my husband Jim, he stays busy with his own work here in Miami, and travels all over with his business...but he always has a close pulse on the projects and work that Jeff and I do. Jim has always been keenly interested in making sure the Island looks like a mini Fairchild Tropical Gardens, so he carefully manages the gardens and overseas the landscape team.
