Amazing view, abundant space, but needs updates
November 16, 2015
My family stayed at Shawnee Cabin for our annual "girls' trip". Overall our stay was very enjoyable. The view was amazing, the proximity to town ultra convenient for shopping, and the house had an abundance of space. It's one of the few large houses I've rented that actually had seating for everyone in the living area. The dining room table was beautiful and the seating accommodated our group. The kitchen had been upgraded and was great for cooking. It looked like other parts of the house were being updated as well which will help because there were a few problems. Wallpaper was coming off, neither of the irons in the house worked and the ironing board was old and when I tried to open it, I had to jerk so hard that it broke. The downstairs bathroom needs some attention as there was a pretty constant, unpleasant odor of sewer gases. Those sleeping on the second floor and loft area were kept up each night by a resident nocturnal animal that wanted company and was on the move all night. We called Friday morning to report it to management and were told not to worry because it couldn't get in the house and there was nothing that could be done until Monday. My biggest issue had to do with check out. I thought it was strange that we were expected to wash and put up all the dishes and towels before we left the house. I have rented many houses and have never been expected to do that. When I asked management about that I was told it was mentioned in the information I was sent. I looked back at my contract and could find nothing about it. It probably was in some other info I had been emailed but because that is so unusual, I think it needs to be mentioned to potential renters. Typically renters are expected to load and run the dishwasher and put linens to be washed in a pile. When 8 people are trying to get up, eat breakfast, take showers and get ready to leave by 10, it is not reasonable to expect them to wash and put up dishes and do laundry. It also made me wonder if the dishes and towels we had used when we were there were clean. i.e. A wet towel could have just been thrown in the dryer without being washed because a previous renter who used a towel didn't have time to wash and dry it before leaving. Not a pleasant thought! As I said, we enjoyed the weekend but I don't think we would have paid this much to stay in a house with all these issues even with the wonderful view and scenery it offered.
