Quiet, Beautiful location on The Narrows
August 19, 2015
The air smelled heavenly with firs and Hay Scented ferns. Usually it was so quiet that we could hear the popping exhale of seals and Harbor Porpoises breathing -- which is how we spotted them several times a day from the dock, or from a kayak we rented for the week. The occasional lobster boat was noisy, but not for too long. The nearby public dock had many kayaking groups going in and out, but that didn't make disturbing noise to us. The kitchen in the cabin was well equipped for one so small, and the two twin beds in the bedroom had been pulled together into one king size bed, in which we slept quite comfortably. Although the owners specify that renters can't use their dock and boats, we were able to put our kayak in from the property's rocky shore without using the dock, and there was sufficient space above the high tide line to secure it as well. We brought plenty of food with us, so were not bothered by grocery stores being so far away. There's a little charcoal grill which we used (no gas). About the only downside to this great little cabin is the lack of internet connection. But the cell coverage including data on my AT&T plan was fine. We were thrilled with the quiet and the comfort, the wildlife we could see from this location (better than Southwest Harbor and Bernard where we also stayed in the next few weeks), and the pretty water view from the porch. There were a few mosquitoes in the evenings, but hardly any during the daytimes. No A/C but we really didn't need it. Remarkably little litter given the proximity of the public dock. Felt peaceful and unspoiled. Bartlett Island (just across the Narrows, visible from this property) and the shoreline to the north of this property were great spots to kayak around, and in the early mornings, the water was very calm. We would definitely go back if we wanted to spend more time in Maine.
