What a Complete Gem
June 28, 2014
My family and I were honored to be the first guests to stay in Sue Up and Down. The owner is a sweetheart, as are her neighbors and friends, and the renovations done on the first floor are breathtaking. The floors are to die for, and exactly what I need to find for my own home. Even the upstairs, while it is a little more aged, was spacious and comfortable. The contractor who did the renovations came out while we were there and told us the upper floor is being renovated next year.
The location is magnificent. You are literally 2/10ths of a mile from the general store, two houses down from Huots, next door to a lobsterman, and approximately three doors from the start of the beach. Hit it at low tide and you can walk all the way to Ferry Beach State Park. We did that many times, with our dogs. While some Maine beaches ban dogs certain hours, leashed dogs are welcome. There are plenty of trash bins for tossing out pet waste.
Over the years, my brother, parents, and my own family have stayed in many Maine rental homes. Of all of them, Camp Ellis in Saco is our favorite. We loved the dog-friendly attitudes (only one woman on the beach showed any signs of not liking the dogs present), the location is ideal, and there is so much space in this home, on the wraparound patios, and in the yard. I've stayed in Wells, Kittery, York, Ogunquit, and Bailey Island, and Camp Ellis wins as the place I would want to live in. Don't be surprised to make some friends during your trip.
Saco and Biddeford's shopping are less than 10 miles. We hit Run of the Mill Brewery a few times, it's not far away at all, and loved how quickly we were able to get around without the GPS.
