Dog Friendly Vacation Destinations
Posted by: Karen Fowler
For many families, pets are another important member of the unit. When many pet owners go on vacation, they want to take their furry friend with them. Many dogs enjoy a fun adventure, and there are many places you can go and take your four-legged companion that are pet friendly destinations. When traveling with the pet, remember to always be sure they are safely restrained in the car. Wandering pets can be a distraction, but they can also be injured in the event of an accident. Bring along a carrier, crate or get a pet car seat or seat belt. Be sure to make sure that they are always wearing their tags. Take pit stops to let them out and allow them time to run around. Keep them hydrated to keep motion sickness at bay as well.
Montauk, New York
Montauk is located at the eastern tip of Long Island in New York. Montauk is a wonderful place to vacation and bring your pet. Montauk has six state parks in addition to its beautiful beaches where dogs are welcome in the off season. The parks and trails where dogs are welcome to explore with their owners include Hither Hills State Park, Shadmoor State Park Preserve and Point Woods Loop Trail. The Montauk Point Lighthouse allows dogs to walk around outside on leashes while owners explore the rocky ledges and hiking trails. There are also several outdoor dining facilities where dogs are welcome on leashes during the summer months.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Cape Cod, MA is a great place to vacation and bring your pet. With many pet friendly hotels and beaches, it is one of the best places to bring your loyal companion. Some local restaurants that are pet friendly include Joe Coffee and Espresso Bar, Lucky Dogs and John Doe's Wood Fired Pizza, among many others. Pets are allowed at most camp grounds and on most Cape Cod beaches during the off months as well.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach allows dogs on the beaches all year round, during early morning hours and later in the day, with some exceptions. For fun activities to do with your pet, the Barc Parc is a great one for dogs. Myrtle Beach State Park allows pets and Barefoot Landing allows pets to accompany you while you shop along the wooden pathways. When it comes to eating, Sonic Drive In and Brewster's Real Ice Cream have drive-in or walk up service windows and outdoor seating, while the Liberty Pub and Grill allows pets in the outdoor seating area.
Ocean City, Maryland
There are many pet friendly vacation rentals on the water. When you get hungry, your pet is welcome at Mackey's located on the bay, at the outdoor seating at Micky Fins and at the Bayside Skillet on the back porch. Some places to visit with your pet in Ocean City include the beach area at Assateague National Seashore, at the Ocean City Dog Park and at the Ocean City Campground.
Dogs like the urban life, too, and are welcome in many facilities in Austin, TX. Many retail establishments are dog-friendly for well-behaved dogs, and most restaurants with patios feel the same way. There are over 15 off leash dog parks in Austin, and several pet friendly RV parks and campgrounds as well. Other activities that you can do with your pet include riding the Austin Carriage Service, visiting the Zilker Botanical Gardens and taking a ride with the Zilker Park Boat Rentals. Overall, Austin is one of the best cities to take your pet on vacation.
