Area Info
Asheville is one of the most gorgeous spots in the world. The fall colors in the Asheville area are among the most splendid in the world. This area is blessed with a mix of moderate weather and an extended fall foliage season for viewing the bursting colors. An artist’s haven and historic hub, Asheville is gaining brand new attention (and new visitors) with the premiere of The Hunger Games, which was filmed here. Add in the town’s University of North Carolina–Asheville’s performance during March Madness, and plenty of people are paying attention to this charming North Carolina city. Here are "Forbes Travel Guide’s" top reasons to visit Asheville:

The history

One of Asheville’s biggest draws is the 8,000-acre Vanderbilt estate, Biltmore—which claims the title of America’s largest home and houses the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Inn on Biltmore Estate on the grounds. Tour the 250-room château-turned-museum, which showcases works from 16th-century tapestries to paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and John Singer Sargent. You can get a deeper look into the Vanderbilts’ lives with the upcoming exhibition “The Vanderbilts at Home and Abroad” opening next month in the estate’s Antler Hill Village restaurant and entertainment complex. And from April 7 to May 20, see Biltmore’s manicured grounds blanketed in blooming azaleas and tulips during the property’s Festival of Flowers.

The beer

This mountain town is home to 11 breweries, including local favorites Green Man Brewery and Asheville Brewing Company. Explore the various taprooms or embark on a “brews cruise” walking or bus tour to taste the local beers. The city’s farm-to-table focused restaurants serve up local cuisine (with a lot of Southern flavors) alongside the craft brews. Sample housemade sausage, maple-glazed wild salmon and local beers on tap at the recently opened The Asheville Public restaurant in the River Arts District. Wine connoisseurs will find plenty to love in Asheville, too. The region’s wine production is booming—Biltmore’s winery and other nearby vineyards welcome visitors with tasting rooms. Local events celebrate the best in libations—the city hosts a Beer City Festival in June and the Asheville Wine & Food Festival hits town in August.

The art scene

Asheville has a long history as a thriving arts community, and neighborhoods such as the River Arts District bring the best local work to visitors. The neighborhood houses working art studios—many open to the public—and hosts studio strolls in June and November when artists hold demonstrations and events. Literary buffs can visit the Thomas Wolfe Memorial in his childhood home. The residents of his mother’s boardinghouse inspired Wolfe’s 1929 book, Look Homeward, Angel.

The movie magic

This mountain region has served as the backdrop for films—including classics—for years. The 20th anniversary of the Asheville-filmed The Last of the Mohicans will be celebrated at nearby Chimney Rock State Park in June, while romantics can relive Dirty Dancing in nearby Lake Lure with the annual Dirty Dancing Festival in mid-August—it’s the 25th anniversary of the blockbuster this year. And The Hunger Games fans can explore nearby towns such as Henry River Mill Village—where Peeta Mellark’s bakery was filmed.

With so much to see and do, it's no wonder everyone is talking about ASHEVILLE!
