Keramikos is a neighborhood in downtown Athens, Greece near the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos. A 5' walk from the Plaka and the Monastiraki area, this site is where the most important ancient Athenian citizens were buried. Kerameikos was named after the community of the potters (kerameis) who occupied the whole area along the banks of river Eridanos.
The "inner Kerameikos" (from the Greek Agora to the Dipylon and Sacred Gates) was the "potter's quarter" of the city. The "outer Kerameikos" (from the city walls towards the Academy), included the famous cemetery and the "demosion sema" (public burial monument) where Perikles delivered his funeral oration in 431 B.C.
The city's ancient cemetery dating back to the 5th century BC. . You will also notice the ancient city walls as well as the Dipylon Gate and the Sacred Gate, built in the 5th century BC. Great processions - during the city's major religious festivals - have passed through these gates on the way to the Acropolis and the sanctuary of Eleusis. The museum of Keramikos features a splendid collection of sculptures and pottery, some of them bearing rather indecent depictionsNowadays one could describe Kerameikos as part of the greater area surrounding the overground train stop Thesio, extending all the way down to Piraeos Street. It’s important for visitors to understand that the Kerameikos archaeological site is only a small part of this ancient neighborhood.
