Area Information

Bahia de Caraquez Ecuador - Bahia de Caraquez became an Ecocity on February 23, 1999 due to the devastation caused by two natural disasters in 1997 and 1998: the "El Niño" phenomenon and an earthquake in august of the later year. Due to the high magnitude of destruction, Bahía had to completely reconstruct itself. Funding and consulting between Japanese organization ACTMANG, Fundación Stuarium and other public and private organizations in Bahía, the city was reconstructed in an ecological manner. The governing authorities of the District of Sucre made the Official Declaration and since then Bahía de Caráquez has been planning it´s development within the sustainable principals of an Ecocity.

The city of Bahía de Caráquez is located in a sandy peninsula in the western coast of Ecuador. It has shown an important development during the last 15 to 20 years, since it has become one of the country's most attractive resort areas due to its beauty and relative closeness to the cities of Quito and Guayaquil, the two biggest cities in the country. It takes some five hours to reach Bahía by car from Quito and four hours from Guayaquil.

At present the population of Bahía may be estimated in 30.000 people located on the urban area and its surroundings. This population is substantially increased during the summer, due to the tourist affluence. In fact, August is usually a very busy time for the zone.

The peninsula is elongated to the N-NW direction and its coastal line has suffered important changes during the last 50 years. Those lands have been used later for developing the modern part of the city.

Really?

April 27, 2013

Well--let me start with saying that the Condo layout, furnishings, neighbor hood, WiFi reception, and evening views were all good. BUT, the good things about this Condo were totally over shadowed by one thing--several hours per day (4-15 hours/day, 5 of our 8 days)--the water would shut down. Now I understand "Ecuador" and "things"--but sorry, I did not sign up to go camping. This was very disruptive and could not even be predicted daily, so that we could make adjustments. We would just come in from a long, sweaty walk, or a day at beach (15 miles away in Canoa--nearest "nice beach" ) with plans to shower up and meet friends for a night out--NO WATER. You can imagine the smell on one particular day --with "bathroom activity" by two adults and no water for 15 hours! The smell was getting pretty bad. Not what we were wanting for our vacation. Ended up staying in town a few extra days--but were very happy to move to a nice Hotel on the Pacific Ocean side. Oh yeah--another issue--picture on ad looks nice--but Condo is on th very dirty river side of peninsula--that is not an "ocean view"...and not very nice in the daytime--brown water -reminded me of rivers in Vietnam. Night view of the bridge was nice. Staff at Condo were useless--never seemed to know why water did not work!? OR when it would come on--not that we could understand anyway--no habla Ingles! NONE!

Owner's reply:

It was a delight to meet Jim and Contessa, when I picked them up at Quito airport, lodged them and took them back to the airport to help make their connection for the Manta Flight. It is so sad that their experience in Bahia, started out wonderful when we last communicated by email. For lack of continued correspondence the above happened. The caretaker told me of the mandatory water cutoffs due to the heavy rains and that there would be water three times a day, 7am-8am; noon to 1pm and 7pm-8pm.

July 2011 stay

August 6, 2011

The view from this property was great, as was the afternoon breeze that flowed thru the condo. The bed was comfortable, and except for the lack of a coffeemaker (which we purchased and left for the next renter), the kitchen was outfitted with everything we needed. The negatives were that when we arrived, the air conditioner wasn't working, we had no cable television connection, and no internet as promised. However, within four days, the air conditioner was fixed, the cable TV was hooked up, and the leasing agent provided a cellular broadband solution for internet.

Guestbook

I stayed in the condo for a week in February of this year and had a wonderful experience. The town is accessible, and the beach and bay are only 4 blocks away. The water was wonderful. Am planning to return.

We have recently offered this condo for rent 12/2/2008 and do not have testimonials yet.
