Visiting the Big Island in Hawaii

Known as the "Big Island," the island of Hawaii is a paradise unto itself. Vacationing families are in for a tropical treat as they explore the state's largest island. Prepare to be awed by the magnificence of everything from its lush rainforests to volcanoes and waterfalls. When planning to visit the Big Island, vacation rentals are the ideal place for families to temporarily call home. In addition, they can also help people save money by avoiding big hotels. Vacation Home Rentals will make your online search for Big Island rentals as simple as possible, with an impressive selection of for-rent-by-owner rental properties.
Areas within the Big Island of Hawaii
There are seven districts on the Big Island. House rentals can be found regardless of where visiting families decide to stay; however, some areas may have more rentals than others. When staying on the west side in one of the island's many vacation rentals, Big Island, Hawaii, tourists fly into Kona by way of Kona International Airport. On the northwestern portion of the island are Kohala Coast and North Kohala. The eastern side of the island is home to Hilo, HI, the county seat and the location of Hilo International Airport. Hilo also has the distinction of being the largest settlement on the island and a place where there are plenty of Big Island condo rentals. To the north of Hilo, tourists may look for Big Island rentals in Hamakua or travel south of Hilo to stay in Puna. Although Kau sits on an active volcano and is one of the least-populated areas, tourists can still find a selection of Big Island vacation rentals to choose from.
Sightseeing on the Big Island and Things to Do
Families on vacation have plenty of sightseeing opportunities during their stay in Hawaii. Big Island vacation rentals help keep tourists rested and ready for exploring the island's many beautiful locales. Outdoor activities include trips to areas like Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Kau, where tourists can hike through a volcanic crater, view steam vents at the Halemaumau Crater, or see active volcanoes. The Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park marks the area where Capt. Cook arrived on the island in Kona. Pana-ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens, Punalu'u Beach Park with its giant sea turtles, and the Puako Petroglyph Preserve are also outdoor locations that are ideal for families.
Regional Foods and Dining on the Big Island
An enjoyable part of staying in one of the Big Island, Hawaii, vacation rentals is the opportunity to explore the regional food and dining experience. Regional food on the Big Island uses only the freshest ingredients on the island, from locally raised beef and poultry to vegetables and fruits grown in volcanic-enriched soil. To the delight of people staying in vacation rentals, Big Island cuisine is an eclectic mix of Hawaiian culture and foods from immigrants from all over the world. This cuisine is known as Hawaii regional cuisine and was established by a group of island chefs in 1991. In addition to dishes made with poultry and grass-fed beef, food on the island frequently includes fish from nearby waters and fisheries, pork, and grass-fed lamb.
Big Island Weather and Climate
In general, the average temperatures during summer days on the island are in the mid-80s. Winter daytime temperatures drop to the high 70s on average. During either of the Big Island's two seasons, the nighttime temperatures undergo a mere ten-degree drop, with the exception of higher elevations, which tend to get significantly cooler. In terms of the weather conditions, the eastern side of the island is typically wetter than the western side, with an average annual rainfall of 130 inches.
When to Visit the Big Island
Because of its relatively steady temperatures through the year, tourists can visit the island of Hawaii at any time and still enjoy the best that the island has to offer. Certain times of year may see more people looking for vacation rentals. Hawaii, Big Island events typically bring more tourists and their families to the island. Families may come to watch for whales from December to May during whale-watching season. Events such as the Ironman World Championship may also increase the number of families who choose to stay in a Big Island vacation rental.
