Alma is the highest incorporated town in North America at 10,578 feet. Founded in 1873, the town boasts an estimated population of 275 (2000 census: 179), with an estimated 1,000 residents in nearby subdivisions. Just 2 miles south of Pete's cabin, you can mix with the locals at one of its restaurants/bars, or the health food store/coffee shop, explore intriguing shops, and mail off the treasures you bought at the post office, and inquire about life above it all at one of the real estate offices.
There are five 14ers that rise above the town: Mt. Sherman (14,007), Mt.Bross (14,172 feet), Mt. Lincoln (14,286 feet), Mt. Democrat (14,148 feet), and Mt. Cameron (14,238 feet). There are many 12 and 13ers as well! Many old mining claims crisscross the high mountains, with several that are still operational. In the height of their heyday, the mines produced over $1,500,000 in minerals annually. Some of their colorful names include the Orphan Boy Mine, Dolly Varden Mine, Sweet Home Mine, Little Daisy Mine, and London Mine.
There are many great things to see and do in and around Alma. The Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area lies just below treeline on Mt. Bross and is a favorite location for photographers, artists, and those that just love hiking and taking in the views. Bristlecone Pines are native to the Rocky Mountains and are thousands of years old. For a driving adventure, take a drive up Buckskin Gulch all the way to Kite Lake, past remnants of the mining days, such as the Paris Mill, and visible high on the bluffs overlooking Buckskin Creek, the Hungry Five Mine with buildings still clinging to the sheer rock.
For a relaxing change of pace try fly-fishing on the Middle Fork of the South Platte River or angling on the shore at Montgomery Reservoir. So much to do and see!

Fantastic Week at Pete's Cabin
August 8, 2012
My family spent a week at Pete's cabin with my sister and her family (8 people total). The place was great with plenty of room for everyone. The house had everything we needed and was very clean and comfortable. The views were fabulous. We saw deer and elk from the deck and even though we didn't fish, we saw several people catching trout from the stream across the road. There was plenty to do in the area to keep us busy all week (hiking, shopping, site seeing). Looking forward to coming back sometime!

The place is perfect! Just far enough out of town to make it relaxing, but close enough to make a quick trip down the hill. The views are incredible and the place makes you feel right at home. Do yourself a favor...take a trip to the mountains and get away from it all.
Great Get Away
June 17, 2012
Our family - 2 couples and 4 twelve year olds - stayed at Pete's Cabin and we had a absolutely wonderful time. The cabin was perfect for our stay, the girls loved the loft area, while the couples each had a room to ourselves. The cabin could not have been more well equiped or comfortable. The kitchen was functional with all the amenities. The view was spectacular, mountains, river, and forest. It was great being out of the city and away from the crowds of Breckenridge. We hiked, biked and walked everyday. A short distance away was a wonderful trail and waterful with hugh boulders where we climbed and wondered for half a day. We saw mountain goats and bald eagles. The short drive to Breckenridge was well worth the it being out in the country. I would recommend Pete's cabin to whom every wants a wonderful retreat away from the crowds and a truly wonderful spot to enjoy Colorado's nature at its best.

We had a great time! It was a little hard to find the cabin but well worth it. The view is incredible and the cabin was a lot nicer than we had expected.

Breath-taking Moon Lit Week!!!
June 25, 2011
My wife, son, friend and I, came up on business from Louisiana. We stayed two extra nights to enjoy the mountains. First of all it was so nice to escape the Louisiana heat! The first night was very nice, the night sky was dark and then the rest of the week was moon lit! What a surprise. We watched the snow capped mountain tops glow all night and the valley was lit up. Very beautiful view in the day and at night. Pete's Cabin was exceptionally beautiful as a true cabin should be in the mountains. If someone thinks cabin they will think of Pete's Cabin. It was well stock with everything needed. We added to the stock with Tony Chachere's (sass-sure-ee) Creole Seasoning, our Cajun flavor. It was very spacious and comfortable. We loved the huge windows and found ourselves not speaking but gazing in awe at the tremendous view. The owners were so pleasant and such a delight to speak to and were very helpful. Anyone who stays here will not be dissappointed. But will feel very grateful that they pick Pete's Cabin. To everyone enjoy Pete's Cabin!!!!
Beautiful cabin amazing people!

My family came over from England and we wanted to show them the real mountians. THis cabin was perfect, it had everything you needed amenity wise and more!! The views were beautiful (right out the main windows were 2 of Colorado's "Fourteeners") It was easy to locate thanks to the map that was given to us. The cabin was so beautiful and well maintained, it truely was a home away from home. Would highly recommend staying here and will be staying again in the future!!

About:For years my husband, Dave, and I did day trips to go skiing from Colorado Springs to Breckenridge...2 1/2 hours away. As we would drive home, we crossed over Hoosier Pass heading south and would see Placer Valley, where a number of homes had smoke curling out of their chimneys. They all looked so...
