Wintering in Luck
February 11, 2013
I had a work-stay in Johnson City and decided to bring along my partner and dog for the trip. At the last minute, knowing a big snow was approaching, I decided to book a cabin, rather than stay in a stuffy hotel one more night of the year. The snow began to gather before we were able to leave Johnson City and head into the woods, but we were determined to get there. Somehow the weather was on our side and it managed to stay warm enough to keep the roads drivable until we could get to our cozy, exceptional cabin. As we watched the snowfall, pulling into the driveway, the owner welcomed us, had the place all warmed up, and made us feel welcomed to call or visit if we needed ANYTHING....which we didn't, by the way...because this cabin had everything you could need for a cozy last-minute nuzzle into the woods, or a long-term for that matter. He directed us to a couple of nearby trails (in walking distance) and we discovered a handful more a short drive away when we left. We only had the night and the morning to enjoy this little haven, and the snow was calling us outdoors. We took such a lovely night-hike up behind the cabin into the woods, and then took a longer one as soon as we woke in the morning. Our dog was in bliss. We had the pleasure of meeting one of the sons who had a hand in building the cabin when he was a kid, as well as his wife, when we were trying to free our car of the 6" of snow that had fallen over 16 hrs. They were generous and gracious enough to get their hands (and knees) a little dirty and help us push the car out of the driveway (which is pretty flat, but there was such snow accumulation, and I had a little sedan). THANKS!! This place is worth the stay AND the short drive off the interstate. I think it was about 50 min from Johnson city, more or less. Oh, and the scenery along the way is breathtaking. I wish I had known about Watauga Lake long ago, as much as I drive up I-26. I wont miss it again. Thanks, and we will be back!

fantastic retreat!
September 29, 2012
A wonderful retreat in the hills of Tennessee. All creature comforts were generously provided by our hosts including a very well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, linens, a washer/dryer and a well-stocked bookshelf. We highly recommend this location. The owners live next door and were especially gracious hosts.

Never having rented a cabin before, this was quite a unexpected surprise in all the amenities that Karen offers to her guests. The cabin is cozy and makes you feel at home, the view of the mountains is gorgeous, the sound of the creek and tree frogs is soothing - all in all - a great place to find some relaxation. Lots of antique shops in surrounding area, close to Virgina Creeper trail. Wish we had more time to stay and explore. Will be back.

Peaceful, unique and naturally beautiful!

The advertisement tells the story of the cabin construction; but, it cannot show the love and attention that built the cabin. Only by staying there can you feel it! Our hosts, including their large family of children, were extremely helpful and what a joy to arrive and find the cabin decorated for Christmas with an 8' live tree. We were traveling with our Boston Terrier and he was welcomed by the host family, also. We were able to take long walks and experienced meeting all the local and exotic animals that are kept by the host family. Experienced drinking goat's milk for the first time. Delicious! If you love the country like we do, you could certainly enjoy spending time at this cabin. We highly recommend it!

Great family getaway!
July 10, 2011
We just came back from a week in the cabin. The cabin is rustic and charming with all the comforts of home. We fished, grilled and made S'mores when home. This location put us within an hour of Johnson City, the Bristol Caverns and Boone, NC. There is Lake Watauga close by where we went swimming and had a picnic one afternoon. If you are up for a little bit more of a drive the Biltmore was a great place to visit. While in Asheville make sure you check out the farmer's market. Vacationing with teens can be a challenge, but staying here gave us some space and variety to keep them from being bored. If you are looking for a relaxed pace, or just to be a little off the beaten path, this is a place you will love!

Peaceful & Homey
June 1, 2011
My husband, myself and our little Feist dog spent the last week of May 2011 at Country Cordwood. It is close to Butler, TN and east of Johnson City, TN (very NE TN). From the very beginning, the owners, Karen & Greg Visser, treated us with kindness and respect. We were not disappointed when we saw the lovely and spacious cabin, hand-built with quality and care by their sons. We had everything there from bottled water, coffee, all bath products, linens, etc. Karen says she aims for people to just bring their clothes, food and toothbrush and she is right. It is like walking into a second home. Don't hesitate to stay at this quiet, peaceful, beautiful place. Ladybug Smith

Peace
October 21, 2010
Growing up in a small town I could not wait to get to the city, but this weekend I was so excited about being back in the country. There was no phone, no computer and no TV for me and I enjoyed just about every minute of it. My husband and I went looking for the changing leaves and found so much more. We arrived late Friday evening and went straight to an OLD country store to get dinner from their grill, cheesesteaks...with enough cheese for four sandwiches...yum! It was like stepping back in time. Saturday we drove a circle around northeastern Tennesse. Over to Elizabethton to see a turn of the century covered bridge. Then up to Bristol where TN and VA are on two different sides of the main street through downtown. Then a trip down 180 feet in the Bristol Caverens. We topped the day off with a sceneic drive down 421 curving through the mountains to take in fall foliage that ranks right up there with the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sunday we headed back to NC with a Parkway trip to Grandfather Mountain. The cabin was all you could ask for and the owners were more than anything I would have dreamed! This is a wonderful unique home...the only thing that I saw was wrong with the cabin was that it was not mine!!!

Great place, Highly recomended!!!

My family and I were very pleased with our stay here. The price was what we were looking for and a real bargin for such a great place. It was equiped with everything we needed and the hospitality by Gregg and his family could be matched by no other! The location was great, especially since I'm from that area and was familiar with the surrondings. We have decided that this will be our vaction spot form now on! Thanks again Gregg, you have a wonderful place and very nice family! We will be back!!

A peaceful place
November 20, 2009
My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary at the "Country Cordwood Cabin". The peace and tranquility was wonderful. We hope to be able to return in the spring when we can enjoy more outdoor activities. The owners were very gracious and kind, the type of folks you would love to have for neighbors.

Great Escape!
July 14, 2009
I travel a lot on business and have stayed at the finest hotels across the US and I must say this stay ranks right up there with the best of them. The cabin is cozy and clean and the owners are most accomodating and helpful. Our 15 year old daughter accompanied us and we thought at first she would be bored given that there is no cable or internet but she enjoyed being out in the country, away from the every day. It's a great opportunity for family time (board games, etc) and the owners have a list of videos you can borrow. Far enough away from town, yet close enough for groceries, etc. Wonderful time, great experience in a beautiful area of the country. We will be back!
