Your hosts, Kenn and Karen Strass, are originally from Saskatchewan, CANADA. We welcome you to our new home in Celestun, Yucatan, MEXICO.
We fell in love with Mexico on our first visit in 1983. In the last few years the visits have become more frequent and the love of the country, the people and their culture have grown stronger. We share with you "Casa de Celeste Vida"... our home of heavenly life. Providing rental suites with the comforts of home!
Merida is known as the "White City" of the Yucatan. Founded in 1542, Merida is a true colonial gem abundant in Yucatecan culture, rich history, and great shopping. Merida is home to the oldest cathedral in all of the Americas. Horse drawn carriages or calesas are for hire taking passengers on guided tours. Paseo Montejo, considered to be Merida's "Champ Elysees"is an elegant, tree lined boulevard with stores, gorgeous colonial buildings and outdoor cafes. Merida is a colonial city, but at the same time, a very cosmopolitan one. You will find movie theatres, 4 universities, museums as well as such stores as Costco, Sam's Club, Home Depot, Sears, and the French supermarket Carrefour. The Yucatan is one of Mexico's most tranquil states. Merida is a must see!
Uxmal is the gateway of one of the most interesting routes in the history of the Yucatan: The Puuc route. (Puuc means 'hilly'). The route includes the sites of Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, Labna and the caves of Lol Tun. Uxmal the most known site means "That which was built three times" and is recognized as a World Heritage Site. It is located 78 kilometres south of Merida. This archaeological zone is surrounded by an ancient hill range. The buildings and their facades are beautifully decorated with stone filigree. The intricate stonework is truly incredible. The structures are a pure expression of Puuc architecture and unique in the Yucatan. We are fortunate that we are able to explore this incredible chapter in human history; the distinctive Maya culture, and embark on a journey that crosses cultures. Uxmal is a 90 minute drive from Celestun!
Lol Tun caves are the largest caves on the Yucatan Pennisula and get their name from the Maya word for flower (Lol) and stone (Tun). Findings of ceramics give evidence of human contact here going back 7,000 years. Along the one kilometre route through the caves fresco paintings can be seen. At the end of the route is a majestic open dome. Guided tours are available.
A wonderful day trip is to the city of Ticul. The Pearl of the South is a bustling city located only 17 kilometres from the caves of Lol Tun. You will find things more laid back here than in Merida. Ticul is the producer of all the wonderful red clay planter pots and reproductions of the Maya gods that you see in the area. It is also known for the fine leather shoes that are designed and made here. Most of these businesses are home based. Stop in and they will gladly allow you to tour and shop! If you find a treasure too big for your suitcase, shipping anywhere in the world can be arranged with the shop keepers.

Wonderful beachfront apartment
February 3, 2009
You can't go wrong at Celeste Vida. Our efficiency apartment was clean, well furnished and thoughtfully equipped with kitchen utensils, a few food staples, and other necessities. Our hosts were friendly and helpful; they welcomed us like family. We were right on a clean beach and a 20-minute walk from the center of town, where you can find 7 or 8 very good restaurants and fairly well stocked little supermarket. The location is great for birders. It is the winter home for thousands of flamingos and hosts other birds as well. We are rank amateurs, but were able to identify more than 50 species in the vicinity.

A Perfect Stay at a Perfect Place
July 22, 2008
We stayed at Celeste Vida for a week, and our hosts helped make that a perfect stay. Want to go fishing? Ken will visit his friend, a local fisherman, and you can do hand over hand line fishing. Great day! Great dinner eating fresh caught boneless fillets! Want to see the flamingoes and the mangroves? Karen will make a call to a friend, and the tour boat will pull up to the beach in front of Celeste Vida--curbside service Yucatan style. Want to cook? Wanda will join you for a trip to the local butcher where you can get fresh pork and chicken. Whatever your need, the owners of the property can help--including doing a load of laundry and hanging it. Celestun still belongs to the locals; it looks and feels like Mexico. I loved walking about the town, visiting the markets and shops where people welcomed me and were patient with my halting Spanish. I loved walking the beach area in front of Celeste Vida, watching the sun sink into the sea. Viva Celestun and Celeste Vida!
It doesn't get any better

This is a truly wonderful place. The town of Celestun is an ideal walking distance for covenience but still far enough to provide silent nights. Though we did not have the pleasure of meeting Ken, Karen and her daughter Kelsey were great hostesses. The rooms was spotless, bright and sunny, had everything we needed to cook meals at home and a great porch for sunsets. The beach is covered in beautiful shells, the water an incredible translucent green. I would recommend Celeste Vida to anyone looking to travel in absolute comfort with friendly and wonderful hosts.

We stayed here in March 2007 and had a fabulous time. Casita Flora contained everything that you could possibly ever want and was a spotless place with a very comfortable bed. It is a relaxing 10 min stroll along the pristine beach to the village. Owner Karen's enthsiasm & zest for life was infectious and she went out of her way to make our stay very special.
