Description of the Centreville vacation home rental

This house is on the estate of John Raskob, builder of the Empire State Building. The four-bedroom, two-bath house is one of seven that Raskob built for his farm employees. Now it has its own dock and swimming pool fronting on Grove Creek, with access to the Chester River and Chesapeake Bay. The property is quite private. The house occupies an acre lot, and across the narrow private road is another acre with a field suitable for games that you might want to bring with you, such as volleyball, badminton, softball, croquet, and the like. For more photographs and information about boating and charter fishing, please visit our "Waterfront House, Eastern Shore" site at the bottom of the page.

There are no additional charges unless you want extra options, such as the cabin or early arrival and/or late departure, as can sometimes be arranged in the off season but not during summer. During June, July, and August, rentals run from Saturday afternoon to the following Saturday morning.

Sheets, bath towels, and pool towels are provided without additional charge.

Do you think of renting a powerboat? An "Owner Supplied Testimonial" below the reviews describes one renter's experience.

Please note that there is no Internet access except via your smartphone. We get serviceable reception on the sun porch and pool deck. Margaret is adept at this but Alan hates the tiny buttons. He prefers to go to the county library, which is a 12-minute drive from the house and has wi-fi and plug-in booths for laptops. There are also online computers that you can use. The library is open daily except Sunday.

We would be glad to answer any questions you might have.

Sincerely yours,
Margaret Williams & Alan Fisher

Area Information

The immediate area is Pioneer Point, as Raskob called his estate. It is more than two square miles, most of which is still farmland and woods. Raskob's main houses, one for himself and his guests and the other for his twelve children, are now owned by Russia and are used as a vacation facility for embassy staff. One way to view the Pioneer Point area is to click on "Map" above the photos and then switch to the satellite option. You can zoom in and out and move around.

On a regional scale, Maryland's Eastern Shore is one of the nation's great vacation areas. It is characterized by tidewater rivers that penetrate far inland from Chesapeake Bay. Each river has its own port used by watermen and recreational boaters. These old towns -- nearly all date from the eighteenth century -- have excellent restaurants and cafes and a wide variety of stores, galleries, and specialty shops.

From our house, the nearest town is Centreville, located a few miles to the east. It is the seat of Queen Anne's County and has a public boat ramp, restaurants, and all the usual stores, including large supermarkets. Chestertown is a half-hour's drive to the north, and Easton is 40 minutes to the south. At nearby Queenstown there are two highly rated golf courses to which there is a link at the bottom of the page. Also in Queenstown is the Prime Outlets mall, one of the best of its kind. The Kent Narrows, located just west of Queenstown, is the site of a half-dozen popular seafood restaurants and crab decks overlooking the water. Some families that rent from us enjoy day trips to Annapolis (40 minutes), St. Michaels (50 minutes), Baltimore (75 minutes), and Washington (80 minutes).

Beautiful Country Setting, Beautiful House!

November 26, 2012

My family enjoyed a week's stay at this home for a week over Thanksgiving. The quiet country setting was ideal for us and my 2 active boys (6 and 9) were never without something to do. Between crabbing, fishing, watching wildlife and canoeing, our week here flew by. The location is great, close to Annapolis, Baltimore and DC. The house is well appointed and very comfortable, and the owners ensured we were taken care of. Highly recommended!!!

Relaxing

September 18, 2012

We loved everything about it. From morning coffee on the dock, watching osprey and herons fishing, biking country roads, swimming in the pool, canoeing, to campfires in the evening. It was a perfect week for us!!

A True Vacation

November 9, 2011

We can't stop talking about this vacation. Two days into our week we decided that we were going to come back the next summer. The group I went with included my family (Husband and 4 kids), my brother and my 2 sisters-in laws. It was the kind of place that we hung out together but when you wanted your own time then you could sit by the dock and read a book or sit by the pool together. I was at such peace that I ran 4 miles a day in that beautiful country. My mind was clear and we really spent quality time together. When we were planning the vacation we thought we would do day trips but after we got there we didn't want to leave those beautiful surroundings. My children were never bored and didn't care about leaving the house. If you really want a peaceful, relaxing vacation and don't care about being connected at all times to the outside world then this is the place. It was pure heaven for us. We couldn't ask for a nicer and more gracious host in Alan.

Fun on the Chesapeake

August 31, 2011

Alan is a gracious and accommodating host. We came together with our children and grandchildren for a very nice week. Our eldest grandson occupied the cabin and had favorable comments. It provided privacy for him. The fishing and crabbing from the dock were successful activities. Our great granddaughter and young grandsons learned to swim in the pool. Canoe trips along the shore were fun. The house has a homey feeling and is easy to live in. The beds were comfortable, there were plenty of games and books, and the kitchen was practical with all modern conveniences. We had a wonderful time.

Home away from home

August 1, 2011

The home was very nice and for the most part provided everything we needed. It is older so if you want modern living spaces this would not be for you. If you are looking for peace and quiet this is the place to go. Not a good area for internet via our phones. That was an adjustment. Had to be in just the right place to get a signal. But if you go into town or other surrounding areas the signal definitely improved. The private pool was what we used the most and my children enjoyed that. There were a lot of books to read if you enjoy reading. The bedrooms were nice and comfortable. There were 7 of us from the age of 17 to 52. We did use the paddleboat one evening which was enjoyable. We are a family that likes to stay home and enjoy each others company. We brought some games that made us laugh and have fun too. There is only 1 TV in the house which we had to adjust to also. Another one upstairs would have been nice. We compromised on what we watched and it was fine. It was nice to get away from our everyday lives and just relax. I would probably only want to stay 5 days instead of 7 if we ever did this again. But I don't think that's an option, i don't know. My family and I are home-bodies and this house provided a home away from home for us. We aren't ones to enjoy running around and being on the go all day. I'm sure we could have found more things to do but we just wanted to relax and spend time with each oither, not drive around to find entertainment.

Everything was wonderful

June 2, 2011

Just returned from our long Memorial Day weekend at the Bulle Rock House. The house was great, everything was provided for us. The kids loved the pool and the canoe's. Everyone had a great time fishing, we were able to catch quite a few keepers. We had a great time visiting a few of the nature parks close by also. This house has everything you need for an exciting vacation for the kids, and peace and quiet for the parents.

A relaxing Spring break

May 6, 2011

We enjoyed the beautiful house very much. The placing was just wonderful! The beautiful river bank, the antique feel of the house. The patio was so cozy. We had a great time enjoying a great game of Chinese Checkers, sipping tea, and looking out towards the river. The kids had a great time too. They went canoeing almost every single day! The weather was exceptionable the whole time we were there permitting us to do a lot of out door activities. After a day of charter fishing, we came home and made S'mores by the camp fire. By the way, we caught two big rock fish. We also play croquet for hours at a time. The neighborhood dogs amused the children the most. They would go looking for the dogs almost everyday. Everything in the house worked perfectly fine. The kitchen was nicely organized, and everything was easy to find. In conclusion the Spring break trip was wonderful.

**A perfect vacation**

August 30, 2010

We stayed at the Bulle Rock House August 14 thru 21 and had a thoroughly enjoyable week. There was even plenty to do at the house for the day it rained. This is a great house to rent if you have a boat also. The boat landing is close by to set your boat in the water and finding the house from there is very easy. The house has more than anyone could ask for as far as amenities, a very well stocked kitchen, paddle boat, and very friendly 4 legged neighbors. Make sure you say hi to Koda if he comes over to visit. I highly recommend staying here at this comfortable house.

Family Fun Central

August 25, 2010

All four generations of our family know this home on Grove Creek as "Bulle Rock": the fabulous family fun place. Everyone enjoys paddling Grove Creek; fishing & crabbing from the pier; probing the dark depths of the pool; and enjoying great food from the kitchen or the grill - all this with peace & quiet and a wonderful view...

Wonderful waterfront- house vacation

July 26, 2010

An ideal house which affords the renter a wonderful mix of relaxation and sightseeing. The pool was amazing and one of the best we have ever used. It was well maintained, clean, very good size and the temperature of the water was just right that it was difficult for us to leave it. The owner provides lots of pool towels which obviously saves lots of room in one's suitcase. The location provides ample, easy day trips in all directions. We visited Annapolis, Baltimore, Dover (DE), Chestertown and Cambridge-Boat Regatta and of course Queenstown for the excellent Shopping Outlet stores. From the house and garden there are lovely views of the water and we enjoyed watching the antics of the local ospreys. Every room in the house has interesting objects which provides talking points over dinner, which has been cooked in the well equipped kitchen. We did not need to bring anything for the kitchen or bathrooms as all necessary items were provided by the owner. Although the July temperatures were above the norm the house and the 2 double bedrooms were always cool. From the moment we decided the house was what we wanted to the moment we left, we found the owner to be extremely helpful, courteous and always answered emails promptly. Our party of 4 was made up of 2 couples (50+years).This house had what we wanted: a pool, overlooking water, AC, and in a good location to visit various places without having to travel for hours. Bullerock House was ideal for us.

Plan on a few day trips...

June 27, 2010

Very nice house. Good location. You will want to do some planning before you arrive, plan a few day trips. The house allows for plenty of relaxation. Good for young families. There are a few great play grounds for the kids in Centerville, MD which is the closest town. Plan to get to Easton, Oxford, and check out the natural areas.

Awesome vacation rental

April 27, 2010

This property had everything we wanted for our large family! Even though the weather was kind of iffy and my husband was on crutches, we were still able to enjoy the beautiful grounds and large pool. The kitchen was large and had a welcoming feel. We hung out in the sunroom and I even slept in there one night. We bird-watched and even took out the paddle boat. It was everything we expected & more. Thanks for allowing us to visit your property! We hope to return this year.

Guestbook

Alan,

We had a terrific time at your place.

Water sports -- Sailed across the Chester to Fryingpan Cove. Kayaked Grove Creek out to the sandy swim beach at the entrance. We anchored the catboat (nice photogenic addition to your pics) there too as our base of operations while we swam, fished, paddled and picnicked. We did this on two days we enjoyed it so.

Powerboat rental -- Drove up to Rolphs Wharf where our reserved 18-foot Bowrider (with bimini) was waiting: $300 for 1/2 day, $375 for whole day plus gas you use. Mid-week the marina was all but deserted with most activity in the on-site pool (it was the hot day of the week). Good experience there, answered all my questions and went over boat operation and safety with me. We took a half day and used about 30 gallons! Travelled down Chester to the Corsica anchoring for a swim and lunch off the beach at "Russian Point". Then buzzed around down and up into Grove Creek a bit. Back out and across to Langford Creek and up the right branch as far as "Lovely Cove." Anchored again for a brief swim near Cacaway Island. Switching skippers, we ran back out of Langford and all the way to Rolphs to return the boat on time. A nice way to stay cool and see the beautiful waterways.

Brief sail with all out on the Chester with light wind. Boys jumped in behind boat and dragged behind on a short tow to cool off.

Launch & recover -- The ramp was very easy to use and the trips on the Corsica were a treat with the views. Not too long a trip even at 6 mph. Your dock was also a treat as my dock on Little Egg Harbor (NJ bay) is subject to wider tide range, almost constant wave action and the occasional big surge from storms.

The Region -- Centerville was an easy hop for groceries, pizza and the Creamery. The people were very friendly and helpful. It seems you enjoy the best lifestyle there. We dined at the Fish Whistle in Chestertown which has a nice view but the food was only so-so in my opinion. We took a day trip to Mount Vernon; a nicely done museum we wanted to share with the boys on a hot day with dinner after at Fisherman's Inn on Kent Island, always consistent.

We have rented several waterfront places over the years and have had great success doing so. Your place was much more of a home than all others: decor unusual and well coordinated not to mention interesting. Is that music framed on the mantel or what language? Art in itself! Great kitchen with every implement. Planned to make s'mores in the fire pit outside but didn't make it. Did use the Weber in the side yard, thanks! Everyone liked swimming in the pool. The house is charming and warm.

After the trip my oldest called me to say it was the best vacation ever. We had a great one! There really are very few places to rent and none like yours. Although it only took me a short while to locate you on the web, I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend a week with my family in such a peaceful place.

Our best to you,

The Taylors
