Description of the Chicago vacation guesthouse rental

The Hansen House Mansion was designed in 1886 by a prominent architect, Harald M. Hansen for his own family, and it now a Historically Significent Building, as it has all its original Victorian detail -- Giannini and Hilgart stained glass windows, Tiffany glass fixtures, pocket doors, pocket shutters, parquet floors, decorative fireplaces, carved wood trim, plaster ceiling medallions, etc.

Its 19th century furnishings and artwork reflect the home's original charm, and its 21st century conveniences such as central air conditioning, highspeed Internet, secure innwide WiFi, a desk in every room, and our strict non-smoking policy all contribute to our guests' comfort. This is a very special place to stay, unlike anything else in Chicago!

On the first level is a livingroom, dining room which seats ten, half bath and deluxe full eat-in kitchen with dishwasher, double oven, etc.

We have four bedrooms, three with queen beds and one with two singles to sleep eight. We can add two deluxe cots for a party of ten.

Guests may book a single room, a suite or the entire inn!

Parlour Suite: The top floor contains a seating area with widescreen LCD television and DVD player, extra ethernet connection, extra sink outside the bathroom, extra coffee maker, refrigerator, microwave, sundeck with umbrella table, newly remodeled bathroom with shower and clawfoot bathtub and two guest rooms.
The Lit Bateau Guestroom has two single beds with a large closet, radio with CD player and an antique hutch with a dropdown desk. The Art Nouveau Salon next door boasts an ornate queen bed and armoire designed by Louis Marjorelle, the Father of Art Nouveau Furniture, plus a writing desk and two night tables.

Deluxe Rooms: The second floor's two guest rooms each contain a queen-sized bed, extra en-suite carved marble sink, walk-in closet, and private bath.

The Celestial Chamber is graced with a magnificent hand-carved Victorian headboard and hand-painted canopy, a walk-in closet with built-in dresser, widescreen television with DVD player, Bose radio with CD player, and a large granite-topped desk. Its spacious bath has faux marble floors and an extra large shower-for-two with Corian walls and seat and a separate dressing area.

The Architect's Quarters, offers a small sitting area with a down-filled settee, an antique carved desk, a fabulous antique armoire, widescreen television with DVD player, Bose radio, dressing room, and a walk-in closet. It's quite luxurious with many architectural details including a stained glass window, decorative fireplace, tall pocket-shuttered windows. Behind a pocket door the bathroom has the original over-sized clawfoot bathtub with handheld shower on an in-laid marble floor.

NOTE: THE RATE LISTED IN THE *FILL-IN-THE-BLANK* FORMAT OF THIS AD SITE IS REPRESENTATIVE OF A SINGLE ROOM. Actual rates vary by the room or rooms selected, number of guests, length of stay and time of year. Please contact us with your actual needs for an exact rate quote.:-)

Area Information

The Mansion is in downtown Chicago's Lincoln Park, a terrific (and safe!) area with fine shops, cafes, restaurants (including several Michelin faves), theatres, movies, museums, Second City, comedy clubs, art galleries, Lincoln Park, the free city zoo and botanical gardens, houses of worship in many denominations, b-weekly organic farmers' markets May 1 - Oct 31 (a MUST for breakfast!) , the lake/North Av beach with its 18-mile jogging/biking path, day spas, upscale barbers, hair and nail salons, a full-sized gourmet grocery, and for any jetlag a 24-hour pharmacy, a 24-hour health club with indoor pool, 24-hour restaurant and 24-hour Starbucks -- ALL WITHIN 1/2 to 2 BLOCKS!

To get anywhere else, there are the nearby Sedgewick subway/el (Brown and Purple lines), abundant taxicabs, and 7 buses, also just 1/2 to 2 blocks.

Michigan Avenue is one mile, the Armitage shops are a few blocks, and Wrigley Field is about 2 miles straight up Clark St.

Lovely in Lincoln Park

May 27, 2013

We highly recommend this historic 1886 mansion for your visit to Chicago! Our extended family of 10 rented the entire mansion for the weekend of our daughter's college graduation, and it was a perfect location within walking distance to Lincoln Park, Moody Church, train and bus stops. The neighborhood shops and cafe's were pleasing and diverse. The home was furnished with antiques and period pieces so that you felt as if you were stepping back in time, yet every modern appliance and the convenience of 3.5 baths made our stay relaxing and quite comfortable. The spacious kitchen and dining room enabled us to prepare meals and dine together in lieu of expensive restaurant dining . Fran assisted us with parking permits for parking in front of the mansion, and additional free street parking locations as close as a block or two away. We all wished for more time to explore the city. Thank you, Fran, for helping us enjoy and create treasured memories in your lovely mansion!

Owner's reply:

Having Doug and his family stay with us was a real pleasure. Ten guests is our maximum which sometimes can be a tad unwieldy, but not with this delightful crowd. They managed quite well with
the 3.5 bathrooms and 3 extra sinks, and made use of the entire house, even the sundeck, which
made us feel good. We hope they and their lovely family will return soon!

Hansen House

October 27, 2011

Six 60 year old women stayed at this property on our Wizard of Oz Chicago Tour. Fran (the owner) warmly greeted us near the parking space she had for us, showed us the house (we had reserved the entire 4 bedroom house) and helped with our luggage. She went over the formalities of the rental, gave us her card in case we needed to contact her and left us to enjoy the house on our own. While we were gone that night, she even brought over items that fit in with our Wizard of Oz theme! Even though the house is a block from Second City in Old Town Chicago it was quiet inside the house. Fran and her husband have decorated the house in period pieces that reflect the times when the house was built. There were many books and brochures about Chicago history and activities available for our reading pleasure. The beds were wonderful and we all slept like babies. The kitchen was well-equipped in case you wanted to make your own meals as we did for Sunday breakfast. As in most older homes, the water pressure varied in the bathrooms however the second floor bathroom with shower had been updated and received the most use. On Saturday we visited the Farmers' Market a few blocks away from the house and what a treat that was! We were close to the bus lines and streets that taxis frequent so it was easy for us to get to our destinations. A bakery, grocery store and many restaurants were nearby to cater to our hunger pains. All six of us agreed we really enjoyed staying here and would not hesitate to stay here again. Thanks, Fran, for the great hospitality!

Weekend Getaway

Beautiful home in a great location. The place needs a good cleaning and maintenance overhaul to ensure everything is in working order. The staff was GREAT however the safety issues with the stairs left one family injured because the steps do not have any safety strips

Perfect neighborhood experience

July 29, 2010

What a perfect neighborhood experience and gracious hosts we had! We parked the car on the curb for the week and off we went to see Chicago. We enjoyed a show at the Apollo, museums, shopping, The Navy Pier, beach, the zoo, Willis Tower and even the Farmer's Market in Lincoln Park. It was a fabulous trip and a fabulous stay at the Hansen mansion.

wonderful stay

The house comfortably accommodated our clan of 9. The kitchen has all modern appliances with beautiful Victorian facades. The bedrooms were clean & comfortable. Fran was gracious and helpful. The only drawback was spotty cell phone reception.

Historic Heaven

November 11, 2008

The Hansen Mansion was perfect for our stay...plenty of room for everyone, yet lots of common areas for all of us to hang out. And the kitchen looks vintage, but is completely modern and is well stocked. The location was also very convenient, close to shops, eating, bars, the lake and easy to get cabs. Our entire group enjoyed our stay!

just okay

October 7, 2008

If you like victorian, you will love this. Having the whole house was a huge plus. If you are sharing with others whom you don't know creaky stairs and only one good bathroom could be a problem. Location was excellent. If you are into modern, don't do it.

Owner's reply:

We agree that our 1886 historic Victorian home is not an *Ikea-wannabe*, but hopefully that already is clear from our photos and description. So we greatly appreciate this recommendation to lovers of Victoriana! However we don't agree with (nor understand) Ms Pascoe's caveat that there is only one *good* bathroom. Would that be the spacious Celestial with its huge shower-for-two, stained glass window and separate dressing room? Or The Architect's with its original king-sized deep clawfoot tub and European shower, also with a separate dressing room? Or perhaps The Parlour's with shower, clawfoot tub, origial sink wirh sprayer and extra hand-painted French sink outside of the main bath? Maybe it's the convenient ground floor's half bath? And is she thinking of the two extra marble sinks in the deluxe rooms? We feel that if one takes her advice to stay here, they will find plenty of bathrooms to enjoy -- and shutting one's bedroom door will eleiminate hearing a late arriver creak up the stairs! :D

GIrls Weekend

September 23, 2008

Stayed for a girls weekend - house was ok - little dusty but to be expected with house that old. Surprised us that owners did not make beds or bring clean towels after first night (stayed 2 nights). House was in terrific location - great for a group of friends.

Unique accomodations

August 1, 2008

The mansion was a unique place to stay and close to the park and zoo and lake. Transportation was great. The mansion has a lot of character and charm but is in need of a little vacuuming. The rooftop porch needed a little cleaning up also. The furnishings were very charming and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay.

We enjoyed our stay and hope to see you again. Thanks again for such a delightful stay!

My friends and I went to Chicago to celebrate my 40th birthday and stayed at the Hansen House Mansion. The Parlour Suite was exactly what we were looking for! Plenty of room, our own private bath and the sun deck was perfect! And the location couldn't be better - within 2 blocks of everything! Had a perfect time and Fran was the perfect host. Thank you!

Thanks Fran,

You were awesome and the place is great!

We'll keep you in mind when next we return to the windy city!

My wife and I have stayed here for three years on and off ever since our daughter moved to Lincoln Park. From the very first visit, Fran and Quincey made us feel like old friends. Fran gives a warm welcome and Quincey helps with the parking and luggage -- a great combination! Sometimes they saty overnight in their apartment downstairs and sometimes they stay at their other B&B up the street, but we always are reminded -- and can attest to the factt! that we can call any time with any questions and they always are very helful. "Our" room is quite luxurious with a super comfortable bed and loads of antiques in the room and all creature comforts including easy acess free wifi, widescreen TV with DVD player (which came in handy to watch our daughter's wedding again!) They are always very cordial to us and our family and we have even done a private dinner there with a real chef -- WOW! Then the day we have to leave they are already here so we don't have to wait, and Quincey helps us with our luggage again and even guides us out of our parking spot if need be since we're not used to city parking. It;s always a every pleasat experience that I would rrecomend to anyone who likes to be spoiled!

Zillions -- see our website for a small sampling, or better yet -- stay with us and ask to see our guestbooks!
