Description of the Corolla vacation condo rental

Have you had enough with too much work & too little
play' ........well...maybe it's time to plan a beach vacation in
Corolla, North Carolina. If your thinking about it, then look
further and treat your family to one of the better things that life
has to offer......some sand in between your toes and a cool drink in
your hand does wonders for your spirit!

If you have never been here, you are missing the experience of a
truly fabulous vacation destination area with numerous options for
your enjoyment. The Outer Banks offer some of the best year round
blue water fishing in the world, with the Gulf Stream as close as 8
miles off shore from Hatteras Inlet and within about 20 miles of
Oregon Inlet. This is about a 50 minute car ride to the Oregon Inlet
fishing Center (check out their web page for up to date fish reports)
and another 30 minutes further to Hatteras Harbor Marina (they also
have updated fish reports on their web page).

If golf is your passion, there are plenty of area courses to play,
including "The Currituck Club", which is across the main road on the
Sound Side. Golf Digest has rated the Currituck Club as "One of
the Best Places to Play".

If golf is not your passion you can hang out on our secluded
pristine private beach and watch the common sight of dolphins and
pelicans. During the summer months a life guard is posted on our
beach within a short distance to our beach access walkway. USA Today
described the Currituck beaches around Corolla as "one of the best
undiscovered beaches on the East Coast." There are wild Spanish
Mustangs that roam the remote beach area between Corolla and the
Virginia state line. A 4-wheel drive vehicle or one of the local
tour operators should be able to put you within sight of these
beautiful creatures. In addition there are various types of kayak
tours, the Wright Brothers Memorial, parasailing, jet skiing, hang
gliding, guided 4 Wheel Drive Trips into the remote area north of
Corolla, dolphin watching cruises, great surfing and some of the
best windsurfing on the east coast. You should be able to obtain
more information for these activities on the web.

Area Description

Currituck County's northern beaches around Corolla have been described by USA Weekend as ''one of the 10 best undiscovered beaches on the East Coast.''

With expansive Atlantic beaches, luxurious seaside accommodations, polished landscaping and upscale shopping and dining complexes, Corolla is an increasingly popular East Coast vacation destination. It is a world of contemporary luxuries, where vacationing is easy and life is civilized.

Corolla is an unincorporated community located in Fruitville Township, Currituck County, North Carolina, along the northern Outer Banks. The northernmost accessible town on the Outer Banks, Corolla has seen rapid development over the past ten years. Up until 1984, when the state extended Highway 12 north from the Dare County line, the town was a sleepy seaside village. Today, multimillion dollar vacation homes dwarf the village proper and make Corolla one of the most desirable upscale vacation destinations in the country. Ironically, it was the opening of the road and the ensuing traffic that eventually led to the relocation of one of Corolla's most famous attractions, the wild Spanish Mustangs, estimated to be about 119 strong. The wild horses are now located on 12,000 acres (49 km²) north of the populated areas of Corolla. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund is a public charity whose mission is to protect and preserve the herd. Corolla is home to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, one of the seven North Carolina coastal lighthouses. While there are year-round residents, Corolla is primarily a summer community. In fact, many of the houses are built with 6-8 bedrooms making this location a favorite for multi-family vacations or reunions.

Corolla is predominantly a vacationland. The full-time, year-round population is only around 500, while the summer population can soar to thousands a week! In Corolla you will find all the amenities you want for a great vacation but not a lot of the regular services you were used to back home. No one really cares too much about the lack of super stores and necessities. Here, everyones mind is on the beach. Corolla's beaches are clean and vast, with fine sand that gently slopes to the sea. In the off-season you can find great isolated stretches of beach all to yourself.

The main tourist season in Corolla is, obviously, summer time - from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Fall is heavenly on the Outer Banks because the crowds are thinner, the rates are a bit cheaper, all of the businesses are still open, the locals are in fabulous moods and the weather is still mild. And don't overlook winter and spring, when you can definitely get an accommodation bargain and some isolation, though not all of the businesses will be open.

While Corolla's draw isn't as a big commercial recreation hotspot on the Outer Banks, it does offer kayak tours, Jet Ski rentals, surfing lessons, fishing charters, wild horse-finding trips, go-carts, a links-style golf course and tennis courts to keep you busy all day long. The only thing you might long for in Corolla is nightlife. There are a few bars that now offer live entertainment during the summer season, but if you want to hop from spot to spot, this isn't the scene. It's really okay, though, since most Corolla residents and vacationers tend to prefer quiet nights -- a late dinner out, a stroll on the beach, maybe a movie. There's too much to do during the day to stay up all night!

Pronunciation:
Many outsiders erroneously pronounce Corolla the same as they pronounce the name of the car, the Toyota Corolla, where the second syllable sounds like roe. However, residents pronounce the second syllable like all.

Development History:
Development of Currituck's Northern Outer Banks began in 1967 when investors from Sandbridge, Virginia, put together an investment group to purchase the undeveloped land. The first subdivision plotted was Carova with 1,993 lots. The lots were originally priced at $11,500; as of 2006, some of these lots are worth up to $500,000.The investors planned for a road to come through from Virginia Beach, Virginia, to allow access to the lots, however these plans were abandoned in 1973 when the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge south of Sandbridge was closed to all vehicular traffic, except by permit. Development pushed south through the 1970s, creating well over 1,000 additional lots in several subdivisions. In 1984 the residents of Corolla succeeded in their attempts to gain a public access road from the south and the state began paving the extension of NC-12 towards the north from Duck.
