I booked this house for a fishing trip as a surprise for my husbands birthday . It was the perfect location except for the fact that the river was closed north or the hatchery and that's where the house was located, north of the hatchery. The home owner knew that it was a surprise fishing trip and neglected to inform us that the river was closed. My husband and I had to drive miles south to be able to fish the river defeating the purpose of renting that house. Morally this information should have been divulged. Being from out of the area we didn't find out till we were there. Luckily we didn't get in trouble for fishing at the house location but it could've been a severely HUGE fine. If you just want to look at the river and maybe play in it this would be the perfect house. The house it self was very nice. I would recommend this house to friends and family but don't trust that you will get pertinent information from the home owner. so do your research on the smith river before booking.
The Smith River is unpredictable, and could be open or closed depending on the rainfall. I do not fish, and unfortunately do not keep daily tabs on the river levels, and am unaware when it is closed or open as this could change daily depending on the weather. All people interested in fishing should check on these things before they come to the area, specifically for that reason. I have discovered that although the Smith River is closed, the Chetco River might be open. The permit fee approx. $16

Hi Debbie We had a fantastic time. The place was clean and everything was functional. We will definitely rent from you again. The views were great even though low flow conditions prevented us from fishing the Smith. No worries as we just drove 15 minutes to the Chetco in Brookings and caught my largest salmon ever. I will send you a photo of my 38 pound monster king. Thank you for everything. Gerard, George and Corrado.

We had a wonderful time, the house was clean and spacious, with a great yard, It could use a little work such as repair of the wood stove. My biggest complaint was that I ran out of Toilet Paper, I was the last to leave the house and went to use the bathroom as I left and found there was not TP to be found., My daughter and her family came by to check the place out before they headed home and want to rent the place next year when they come back for the Crescent City triathlon.
fun fishing spot

Had a great time relaxing and enjoying the views. Too dusty for a person with allergies (me), spent a lot of time blowing my nose and sneezing. Otherwise, a wonderful cabin to take in the views, fish, and take trips to the redwoods or ocean!
I'm sorry the place was dusty. We will definitely get that taken care of. I think some of your allergies might have been from all the smoke we have had over hear from all of the fires in Oregon. I'm glad that you had a nice time relaxing and taking in the views. Its a peaceful place, and the river and wildlife are always beautiful to watch.
Beautiful home and great views

We spent a week with our daughters and their spouses (6 adults total) and had prenty of room in-side and out to relax and play all kinds of games. Even though the house sits on the river it's 15-20 feet above the water line, so there is no river access; that was a disappointment. We scouted around and spoke to locals and they directed us to fishing and swimming. Outside needs alittle TLC, but if we vacation in the area again would love to return to this property.

We recently moved from the country to town to be near a project we are starting. hmmm make that preparing to get ready to start. Anyway, life in town is busier, less private and definitely noisier. We were craving a get away that really would get us away. Rest and Refresh is what we sought and The cabin on the "Majestic Smith River" helped us achieve that. We appreciated Debbie meeting us in town late at night (we were delayed by a truck accident blocking the road in the Smith River Canyon.) She was friendly and helpful. It's a short drive from Crescent City to the cabin. It has a Lovely spacious green lawn out front and a pleasing view of the river out back. You can't access the river from this place, but the sound of the riffle below was just right. The neighborhood was peaceful, quiet, well sort of. there were lawnmowers going here and there, but it wasn't close enough to be annoying, Just a happy sound on such a sunny Saturday. We found it was very convenient to drive to the Redwoods, the beach, brookings, crescent city, Kingdom Hall, and of course the beautiful river. It was clean enough, well stocked with towels and linen, Kitchen stuff and washer and dryer. It was easy to stay there. We had no Internet access, ATT cel phone wouldn't work (US Cellular does) and just a couple of channels on the TV. So we were able to unplug and be un-bugged. Lovely! The downside was not having the pellet stove working. There were a couple of space heaters, but it was still a bit chilly for lazy laying around. The weather was sunny tho, and the passive solar heat was great. We would return. As a matter of fact, can hardly wait to return! Really, we found what we needed while staying at the cabin. Rested and refreshed we made our way home and the memory of those couple of days will help keep us moving forward cheerfully. Thank You Very Much

We are a family of 3 and had a memorable family getaway that was made for us. Our son was thoroughly entertained by practicing his batting in the front yard and apple trees. We enjoyed grilling salmon and shrimp on the barbie. The cool, misty mornings were refreshing and filled with owl and local birds.

My wife and I traveled out to this cabin with 2 friends in two. It was peaceful and quiet--yoga time right on Smith River, what could be better! You can sit in the living room or out on the back porch and watch eagles or hawks fly over redwoods just across the way. Amazing! The cabin experience was new for us--a big step up comfort wise. If you are used to resorts, this may not meet your criteria, but for a great place to share meals and call home close to the redwoods and all the splendor, it can't be beat. We hope to return.

The location was wonderful!...home was comfortable, private and wonderful view. However, it did need a good cleaning, eg: bathroom, fridge, oven and bugs out of all corners. The ant problem was not an issue until the 3rd day and then they started to appear.. All in all it was a good vacation. Judith Sansom

We loved our stay at this lovely cabin. The river was literaly out the back door along with a peaceful mountain view. The Crescent city area-ocean and big trees was beautiful, fun, and interesting to explore. I highly recomend the "boyscout trail" in the big trees just outside of Crescent city.
Great Spot on the River

Loved the view of the Smith River, quite beautiful. Cabin was comfortable once we learned how to use the pellet stove. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't warm when we got there. After 11+ hours in the car I really just wanted to relax and not have to figure something out, but it worked out okay. Jed. Smith state park is close, nice to do some exploring there. Crescent city is close also, the beach was nice and we managed to get some nice photos. Eureka is a bit of a drive, 80 miles turns into almost 2 hour drive when you account for the curves and slow traffic, but there's a brewery there (Lost Coast) that is worth the drive. Bed in the cabin is a little on the hard side and there are some ants to deal with but overall it's a nice relaxing place with fabulous views.
Came up for the fishing. Caught 4 on the Eel. Also to have a Birthday. We did all the sights and had a blast. Our kids love it. The fishing was fun. We will be back. It was so nice to have some of our dogs here. It was a first for us all to have a pellet stove (we all have wood stoves), but once we figured it ourt it worked fine. The wine was a nice welcome. Everthing was so homey. The ants were the only problem and that was no big deal. 15 lb steelhead on the Eel was released to be caught next time. Thanks for the nice house on the Smith. Hope to see you next year same time.
Thank you from San Juan and Nevada City, CA
Happy Groundhog Day. he saw his shadow! Those pesky moles are at it too, aren't they? These days have been a great respite. We (the dog and I) had a great time in Paradise. Thanks for a swell stay.
