Midcoast Waterfront Maine Home

This family summer home on the St. Georges salt water river is secluded and serene. With direct waterfront and panoramic views, watch sloops sailing up and down the river, lobstermen pulling pots, even occasional seals leaping or sunning. Osprey routinely catch their dinner in the river. Last year, eagles nested at the top of an especially tall pine tree in view of the house.

Explore the clam flats and riverbed at low tide. (Yes, there are steamer clams for the digging and clamming forks at the house if you’ve a mind to try.)

Walk, jog or ride your bike around “the loop,” a 3 or 4-mile circle of road around Stone’s Point. Then relax on the screen porch with a book from a large collection throughout the house. Or choose one of the many board games or puzzles available. Of course there’s cable, internet and a DVD player, but who goes to Maine to watch TV?

After a home cooked lobster dinner, put your feet up in front of a cozy fire in the fireplace and remember what it’s like to have no agenda at all. Or step outside and look up. With no light pollution, no place has more stars than a clear Maine night sky.

When you crave a little civilization, there are many attractions within an easy drive, many only 10 miles or so away.

Cushing is a small rural town with a post office, a small general store and is the site of the house featured in artist Andrew Wyeth’s famous painting, “Christina’s World.”

Thomaston, about 10 miles away, is a charming old town with its history literally carved in stone along the main street and worth a stroll through. Rockland is about 5 miles beyond and boasts many attractions including restaurants, boutique shops, galleries, the harbor, the Farnsworth Museum (art), the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum and the Rockland Lighthouse Museum.

Picturesque Rockport and Camden are several miles beyond Rockland. Camden Hills State Park offers hiking trails, a waterfront picnic area and, at the summit, spectacular views of Penobscot Bay. Lighthouses are another attraction in the area. Lobster is everywhere.
