Area Information
The charming town of Damariscotta, renowned for its oysters, arts, history,
colorful festivals, and wildlife, awaits at the end of your dock.
Located in midcoast Maine, The Twin Villages of Damariscotta and Newcastle are divided by a vibrant, tidal river. Damariscotta, the "river of many fishes" in Abenaki, is named for the alewives that annually migrate the river and then swim up the remarkable fish ladder at Damariscotta Mills in order to spawn in the lake above.
The river is also one of the northernmost mating grounds of the primitive and marvelous horseshoe crab. And these waters support seals, ospreys, bald eagles, king fishers, great blue herons, mackerel and stripe bass, just to name a few.
Humans have also worked this river for about 13,000 years. Their most famous legacy forms immense, white oyster shell mounds on the riverbanks. These shell heaps are testament to the oyster beds that once produced shellfish one foot in diameter. Today the river produces farmed oysters and mussels you can sample in local restaurants.
Mazu, your boat hotel, docks at Schooner Landing Marina, from which you can kayak or canoe the river to explore the magical wildlife, timeless mansions and the working waterfront of oyster farmers, lobstermen and fishermen, and visit the marvelous state park, Dodge Point, and its quiet beach.
Damariscotta is only 1 hour from Portland; 45 min from Freeport's L L Bean; 45 min from Rockland / Camden; and 25 minutes from Boothbay Harbor. Nearby are the scenic fishing villages of Round Pond, New Harbor, and South Bristol. And at historic Pemaquid, you can visit the famous lighthouse, the beach, and the archeological site of the original colony.
The Twin Villages themselves are home to a lively mix of galleries, boutiques, bakeries, a bookstore, and restaurants where you can sample the oysters now known around the world. Damariscotta is also home to a small movie theater, an annual oyster festival, and the high-spirited Pumpkin Festival.

By day, Damariscotta River Cruises offers relaxing and informative aquaculture and history tours of the river -- or take a sunset cruise with live music, and have a complimentary drink on us!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to have previous boating experience?
A: Not at all. Mazu will remain docked during your stay and has all the comforts of home.
Q: Will I be sharing the boat with other guests?
A: No, you rent the entire yacht, so you will be the only guests on the Mazu. If you need assistance you can call us 24/7 and we can see you usually within 15min.
Q: Will the yacht be rocky when I'm trying to sleep?
A: No...
Mazu, the floating B&B is docked in a protected part of the Damariscotta River, 14 miles from the open ocean. Schooner Landing Marina is a peaceful, no wake zone - which means no rolling or abrupt wave motion for a good night's rest.
Q: Since the yacht doesn't leave the dock, how can I discover the Damariscotta River?
A: Mazu comes with 2 kayaks and a canoe. If you need more, there is a kayak rental on the same dock or you can take a tour with Damariscotta River Cruises.
