Description of the Deep Creek Lake vacation home rental
Small lakefront house on Deep Creek Lake available for weekend and weekly vacations. Bring your friends, favorite cousins, siblings, grandparents and parents to this wooded retreat on Maryland's largest lake high in the Appalachian Mountains. Enjoy its private dock, fly fishing, lake fishing, water sports galore, restaurants, multiplex movie theatres, stores and more. Centrally located near Glendale Bridge (see map), micro-brewery, winery, art galleries, artisan glass factory; clay & other tennis courts and the Western Maryland Tennis Championships in late July/early August each year; riding, hiking and bike trails. Deep Creek has hosted the well-known Iron Man Triathlon, and Olympic whitewater trials and training. A sailing school and many regattas from 2 or more yacht clubs run throughout the summer. Bring your own or rent scuba gear and jet skis. Nearby is one of 2 large, man-made white water courses on the east coast where kayakers, canoers and rafters of all ages can learn how to navigate real courses of all speeds and water levels on many rivers in the area.

A garden club tour of many houses, in town and on the edges of forests, in June is delightful and a native plant nursery with tours and talks is nearby. A large fall festival draws upwards of 20,000 people to the area. Music festivals, whether blue grass or classical, run throughout the year.

Unlike most vacation rentals in this resort area, this house comes with free firewood for the wood burning stove. It is a single family home, not a condo, and is surrounded by other single family homes on a quiet, wooded lot. We own all the property from the house to the lakeside picnic pavilion and shore, so there are no streets or busy parking lots children or adults would need to cross to get to our dock, as is the case with many other rental properties at the Lake. The dock also is completely private and not shared with any others. Guests may keep one or more boats that they bring or rent on the lake tied to the dock during their visits.

Panoramic views of the lake from the living room, front porch, dock and master bedroom provide seasonal landscapes, light plays and ever-changing palettes to delight the senses. Many woodland and water birds fly and swim by (Mallards, Teals, Swans, Cooper's Hawks, Great Blue & Green Herons, Egrets, many others). Its a beautiful time of year in the mountains of Maryland's largest and most forested county.

Savage River State Forest, Maryland's largest state forest, with a large wilderness area and home to Olympic whitewater trials, as well as several other state forests and parks, are a short distance from this house. Maryland's largest waterfall, other swimmable falls, and a nature center for children are also close by. It's all a 2.5-3 drive from Harrisburg, metro DC & Baltimore; 2 hours from Pittsburgh, Winchester and Frederick.

Area Info
Garrett County is Maryland's largest county and most heavily forested. Many state forests and parks, each with its own recreational highlights and features, abound. The Nature Conservancy has long been active in the area. Muddy Creek Falls is Maryland's largest water fall, while close by Toliver, an incredibly beautiful virtual wading pool for toddlers, and Swallow Falls, equally beautiful and exciting for older kids and adults, have been the delight of gleeful swimmers for generations.

Deep Creek Lake is Maryland's largest lake, with roughly 75 miles of shoreline. It is the largest lake in a multi-state region with depths up to 80 feet and more. It is home to many kinds of fish, including the legendary Lake Trout or Mackinaw, as well as many bass and other trout. Nearby mountain streams provide plenty of fly fishing opportunities, as well as water sports opportunities.

Oakland and Mountain Lake Park, each a short distance from the Lake, provide extensive stocks of Victorian and Craftsman era houses. The first has a downtown historic district, which includes an interesting historical museum and transportation museum that features the importance of the railroad in developing the area. A restored train station from the late 1800s is in Oakland, which, along with Mountain Lake Park, provide plenty of interest to those interested in architectural history. All of Garrett County has been designated an heritage area by the State and the region aspires to be a Chattaqua of the Appalachians. Mountain Lake Park has an informal walking tour of its homes.

The Western Maryland Tennis Championships, played on clay courts in Mountain Lake Park, is the oldest USTA recognized tournament in the state (1915) , while it remains intimate and a good place for teenage and college rising tennis starts to test their skills and learn. It is small enough to be friendly, yet competitive enough to contribute to players' rankings.

For those close enough to return once a month, several CSAs (community supported agriculture enterprises) by organic produces exist, as do several farmers markets.

The Autumn Glory Festival in October has been recognized as one of the best fall festivals on the east coast. Each year, the multitude of exhibits, artisan craftsman and musicians provide plenty for the onslaught of visitors that make getting places to stay, as well as parking in some areas, difficult to impossible without advance planning.

None of this begins to describe the winter events which range from dog sledding to ice fishing, even ice sailing, in addition to popular downhill and cross country ski options.

Anyone who has particular interests, please don't hesitate to ask and we will be glad to tell you what we know about activities related to them.
