From the house walk 300 yards to beautiful ocean inleta great location for magical sunrises. Nature Conservancy Trails are many about the island. Fish 400 yards off the rocks. Clam in same area with an inexpensive $5 town license. Beaches are close by. We adore the SECRET BEACH!
Writers, artists, art students, birders and kayakers and lovers of beauty places are drawn to the island for its pure, unspoiled beauty, wonderful hikes and kayaking routes.
John Steinbeck said that Deer Isle was his favorite place to vacation in his book "Travels with Charlie", a book describing his summer of visiting the United States from east coast to west coast.
The island is kayaking and hiking heaven. Kayaks go in the water 1/4 mile away from our house as well as all over the island, you have access with parking. Kayaks are rented on the island. National Heritage Trust hiking trails 1/4 mile away. Artists paint outdoors. Birders flock to the island. We have a gorgeous sandy beach near by with COLD Maine water where one can see tall ship schooners pass by on their way to Stonington or Winter Harbor. The is a pond on the island with warmer water. Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is 3 miles from our home for world class free slide shows of world class artisans. Acadia National Park is spectacular and words cannot cover its majestic landscalea 45 min. easy ride. No charge for parking on the island for beaches, ponds, etc. NO FEES.
Restaurants are great...most with water views. There are two markets on the island, a great wine store, as well as fish, lobster and clam outlets. The Opera House is the local venue for great movies, live theatre and world-class jazz.
The art galleries are diverse and welcome all with open arms. No snobby ignoring with these gallery owners. They love people to stop in and ask questions.
Tall Ships make Stonington one of their stops along their northeast coming out of Rockland and Camden. Some days there are one to three beautiful tall ships "parked" in the Harbor.
You will drive over a beautiful 1920's green bridge which takes you across a Penobscot inlet. The bridge was installed to allow Deer Isle granite to be trucked off island to Boston and NYC. The JFK Eternal Flame Memorial monument is made of the beautiful pink granite found on the shores of Deer Isle. Jackie came to Deer Isle and picked it out!
Deer Isle is home of Stonington Harbor, the largest lobstering port on the U.S. east coast. Also, Deer Isle is the home of visiting writers and a few who stayed and called it home. The island is the year round and/or seasonal home of many well known Visual Artists. Buses arrive in the Fall from NYC filled with gallery owners to place orders for NYC specialty stores. The Haystack Mountain School attracts professional artists, teachers and students: glassblowers, sculptors, fiber artists, photographers, wood artists, and ceramic potters and sculptors from around the world. If you are looking for malls, you won't find them on Deer Isle. You can drive to Ellsworth or Bangor, however and enjoy that experience as well.
Blue Hill is also a wonderful local township with lots of community, cultural and wildlife attractions.
Bar Harbor, 45 minutes aways offers great ocean excursions, sunset dining and dancing on the ocean, biking, horseback riding, hiking and kayaking. Shopping is a delight in both of these areas.
Bangor is home of an International Airport. We are 1 hour from the airport. Car rental is available at the airort. Bangor is home to a very popular casino, rather new to the area. Our local celeb is Stephen King who lives in Bangor and owns the local radio station.

Three - Summer 2010 Testimonials for mid-summer to September
July 24th to August 7th, 2010
Dear Diane and Bill, My husband was finally introduced to your home nestled in the woods...beautiful scenic Deer Isle. We thoroughly enjoyed our two weeks and the close friends that stayed with us. The Castine Home and Garden Tour was delightful as well as the Flash in Pans Concert at the Town Dock in Castine. We climbed Blue Hill (Blueberries for Sal), Gorham Mountain in Acadia and several of the islands Heritage Trust trails. We took the Isle AuHaut site seeing trip today at 2 p.m. - lots of seals and even a BALD EAGLE! We explored Acadia Penninsula the first week and enjoyed visiting art galleries we missed last year....The Blue Heron gallery and the Turtle Gallery. We had wonderful lunches at Fisherman's Friend and the Seasons at Stonington Restaurants; The Cockatoo Portuguese Restaurant in Sunset, ME on the island. Our favorite dinners out were Whales rib Tavern at the historic Deer Isle Pilgrim Inn and Lily's Cafe and Wine Bar in Stonington. Susie Q's Sweets in Stonington has great homemade pies for all the meals we ate in! Do no miss The Inn on the Ha4rbor "Ice Cream Lady" blueberry ice cream or the expresso coffee chip!!!!!!! The Harbor Cafe in Stonington has wonderful breakfasts and is open early for the local lobstermen. My favorite Harbor walk is Indian Point Road (last left as you enter Stonington Main Street) which leads to Ames Poind. Thanks again for opening your beautiful, beautiful home to us! Marilyn and Carl from Newbury, Massachusetts.

Diane and Bill - We've had a wonderful stay here in your beautiful home - we couldn't have asked for a nicer place to relax and recharge! We've enjoyed the walking trail and serenity of Mariner's Park, and lovely dinner at TABLE in Blue Hill. Bar Harbor and Acadia were wonderful and Schoodic Point was SPECTACULAR!
Many thanks for sharing your special home with us! We hope to be back again!!
