Tranquility and Peace

August 13, 2014

Jim was such a gracious host. The house has everything you could ever need to disconnect from the world for a week which is exactly what we did. The interior is beautiful and welcoming. I loved the jigsaw puzzles adoring the air return vent box in the loft. A very neat decorating idea. Don't even get me started on the outside shower. I want one of those at my house! The house has such a positive energy ...especially that swing on the porch. I spent hours on that swing watching the lazy waves and feeling the breeze. The stars at night were beyond my wildest imagination. I will miss Jim's cottage on the beach. Thanks for a lovely stay and memories, Jim.

Tranquility Found

July 27, 2014

Fell in love with the house and Dog Island! We stayed here from May 24th - 31st. We took the ferry from Carrabelle and Jim met us at the dock at DI, drove us to the house, and made sure we were settled in. One day the wind took our canopy and broke the frame. Since there are no stores on the island - it's kind of a big deal if you need something unexpectedly. We called Jim, walked down to his house, and he gave us some duct tape. The house was just perfect; very open and spacious floor plan. - well built and sturdy. Perfect for a couple, 2 couples, or a small family of 3 or 4. We opened up the double doors to the bedroom and could hear the waves outside even though the exterior doors were closed - so peaceful. The master bed is super comfy and firm. We loved the outdoor shower and the swing on the front porch. The full kitchen was well equipt with plenty of dishes, cookware, utensils, and necessities. There were also more than enough towels and linens. We never left the island the whole week. You need to be able to let go and unplug to appreciate how wonderful this place is. That said, we had cell service (Verison) and used 3G if we needed Internet - but hardly used either. The house is well stocked with DVDs but most nights we watched the sunsets late in the day, ate late dinners, and sat on the porch listening to the waves and watching the stars. Food: For just 2 of us for a week we brought dinners for 5 nights, ate left overs a couple of nights, sandwiches and salads for lunches, and 2 dozen eggs, sausage, bacon etc for breakfasts. Water: We used the tap water for making coffee and washing dishes and brought 8 gallons for drinking for 2 of us, but we had a gallon left over since we didn't always drink enough water every day. We never made it to the end of the island and the surf was too rough to kayak, but we did see the bayside of the island one day which I highly recommend for nature watching. My favorite was waking up to the waves, making morning lattes and sitting on the swing watching dolphins play in the smooth water.

Exceptional rental, beautiful location. The only reason I didn't give it a five was the Kayaks were junk (needed them for shark fishing) Fishing was good shark, pompano and others.

Great Beach House!

April 21, 2014

We loved this house!!! The owner Jim is lovely, he picked us up from the marina and helped us load all our gear from the car to the house, he even took us to the Marina again for a day out in Apalachicola, then picked us up in the evening to take us back to the house! The island house is exactly what we were looking for...a cool beach cottage with amazing views not just from the wrap around porch, but from the kitchen and living area. We are a family of three but the house can sleep more as we did not use the bedroom downstairs. There is a good stereo, which is nice because you can rock out w/o your neighbors hearing you:) Older movies like the first three Star Wars, which our 5 year old had not seen yet and loved, also brought us back. The kitchen is wonderful and open, the view is amazing, an extra treat while making lunch and dinner. Bring all your food and drinking water and sunscreen...walk the beach for shells and dolphin watching..see old planes buzz by your porch and step back into a time that still does exist. Heaven!!!! Can't wait to come back:)))) Thanks Jim and Stephanie xoxo The Gilberd's

A week of sun and memories!

September 15, 2013

We just returned from a week at Beth Anne's Salty Dog house on Dog Island. Our three kids (9, 6, and 1) absolutely loved it, and my husband and I did, too. There were beach umbrellas for shade, sand toys and boogie boards galore. The boys loved each getting in a kayak to play pirates in the shallows. We saw stingrays, a few jellyfish, lizards, beautiful butterflies, lots of pelicans, and even dolphins one day. We spent our mornings and evenings on the beach, and watched movies or played games during the heat of the day. The kitchen was easy to use and well stocked. There was even a first aid kit. There was a SUV for us to use at the dock to carry all our belongings to the house. There's nowhere else to drive besides that, though! If I could have done anything differently, I would have brought more bug spray (bugs were only around when there was no breeze, but my one can malfunctioned on us and was useless). Beth Anne was really easy to work with and a very gracious host. The stars were beautiful, and I will treasure the memories our family made at the beach!

Fish On

April 23, 2013

Spent a week at Jims, what a great place it lived up to all are expectations. The fishing was great although it did take a long walk out then a long cast, but lots of fish. We were using 13' Cabelas whoppin sticks, 15# braid with fresh shrimp on pompano rigs. Would recomend this place.

This was our first visit to Dog Island. It is very beautiful & peaceful place to stay. The house is gorgeous! Early morning & in the evenings, we enjoyed watching the dolphins feed. Sunrises were breathtaking. We hope to come back again next year. Jim was very kind to us. He is very friendly & we enjoyed meeting him.

I have been meaning to write a review since we came back, but you know how life gets in the way. This home is AMAZING! We had a great time! The fishing was awesome, the scenery is gorgeous. If you want quiet, beauty, seclusion....this is the place to be. Thank you so much Jim for allowing us to rent your beautiful home. We have been trying to get dates set to come back this year!

Peaceful Solitude

September 28, 2012

This is the perfect get-a-way. The post and beam house has character beyond discription with great Gulf front views of wildlife 24/7. The sea Kayaks were great fun, easy to use and safe on the water. We even fished from them. The walks along the beach revealed more natural treasures watching birds fish and dolphins swimming. The stingrays are plentiful this time of year and while standing thigh-deep a large sea turtle swam by to check me out. My wife and I are repeat visitors and hope this place will be available for a long time.

Dog Days

September 11, 2012

We chartered a 7:30 ferry home on a Monday morning so we could stay just ONE MORE NIGHT, and so I could still make my morning teaching classes. A nice little cool front came through and brought lows in the 60's and a crystal clear dawn sunrise. Sad to leave the island, period, but especially with such a nice turn to the weather. Got lots of wind through the weekend (a wonderful break from the late summer heat, rain, and bugs), great body-surfing, lots of rest and reading, plenty of long walks on the pristine and secluded beach, and tons of school work done. Might not sound like much of a vacation, but getting away from all the home chores, and being able to catch up on school work in such a peaceful, beautiful setting is life-bending. It sets a much saner tone for handling the too-much-to-do-everyday tedium of the heavy work weeks. Sigh... Never even turned on the hot water, and mostly able to use just the wind and fans to cool the house. There's a friendly little frog hanging out in the outdoor shower, likes to be rinsed with fresh water on the post there, sings to you in the evening. Thanks so much for sharing, Jim.

Tropical Storm Isaac

September 6, 2012

Due to tropical storm Isaac we were forced to cancel our plans to visit this property. However, the owner was gracious enough to offer a refund of our deposit without us even asking. We decided to leave our deposit and reschedule for May of 2013. Really looking forward to that visit.

A jewel in the crown of Dog Island

August 5, 2012

This cottage is sheer heaven. It exceeded all expectations. Cozy, rustic, and so comfortable. Excellent views, uncrowded white sand beach great for a morning run, soaking up the sun, or fishing. The outdoor shower was my favorite! Spent some time exploring in the 2 kayaks. The hammock and porch swing ease away any stress.....the perfect vacation spot. The hosts are so gracious, excellent ambassadors for Dog Island. I can't wait to return!

A beautiful house and a more beautiful island

June 12, 2012

We had a spectacular time and can't wait to go back. We wanted a family beach experience that was more about relaxing amid the beauty of nature than about bikini-clad crowds, and that's just what we got. We were usually the only people on the beach, though we would occasionally see a few neighbors in the distance or passing by on a walk. The house was very comfortable, and Jim was more than helpful. Our child got sick mid-week, and Jim found another island resident who was going to Carrabelle and was willing to pick up a prescription for us. Jim even met the boat and delivered the medicine to our door. The only down-side for us was the water. I thought a filtered pitcher would fix the issue I had read about in other reviews about Dog Island, but it did not. I will definitely be packing in bottled water when we go back next summer. We drank the well water, and I know it was safe, but I didn't particularly enjoy it. It's a small issue, and easily fixable. I only mention it so no one else thinks to outsmart the Dog Island water supply with a $20 pitcher, because it won't work. ;)

Thank you Jim, Stephanie, and Max

May 9, 2012

Jim allowed us to have the privilege to enjoy his rental home on Dog Island. Make no mistake about it, the island is a secluded place that does require you to bring your own food, water, and entertainment. But it is a calm and peaceful paradise to relax in. The house itself is in fantastic condition and provides all the modern household amenities that you would find at home. The only difference when comparing it to home: ocean view and a fantastic beach for your private enjoyment. If you do rent it, please be respectful of the house, it is in fantastic condition and we do plan on renting it again. Also, if you meet Max, rub Max's belly. He is a fantastic, cute, and social dog.

Jim has the best home on Dog Island. The house has a warm feeling to it, very comfortable to stay in. Efficient kitchen, wrap around porch that goes completely around the house, excellent views from every room. The house is an amazing piece of craftsmanship. Jim is also an excellent host with a wealth of knowledge about the island.

Perfect beach cottage

July 3, 2011

Jim's home is the perfect beach cottage: you can be as active in the sand and surf as you want to be, because you are ON THE BEACH, or you can relax on the wraparound porch and bury yourself in a book or conversation with the li'l ol' Gulf of Mexico at your service. The home is lovely (the photos don't do justice), with everything you need, including some very effective summertime A/C. Four of us were quite comfortable in the master+loft. The kitchen also works well, which is critical, because you're going to be cooking. We packed a cooler with gulf shrimp, grouper, and redfish en route, and ate like gourmets all week (we managed a week's food and beverage for four in two coolers and two duffels). Yes, it's quiet, but don't come to Dog Island and fuss about the lack of a putt-putt course. Come to Jim's home for a perfect location on a perfect beach, a gracious host and a lovely cottage set amidst spectacular water and sky. You'll not miss the windmill.

An Island Named Dog

May 31, 2011

I hadn't been back to Dog Island in 40 years but I found it relatively the same- Wonderful !! I'll never stay away again. The Cottage was great and Jim Van Liere was an excellent host. He picked us up at the ferry dock & was friendly & courteous & made us feel right at home. He gave us a running tour of the island as we headed for the house & he lives nearby so he was always available for questions. The teenagers with us loved the sea kayaks provided & I loved the hammock on the porch overlooking the beach... I slept there several nights even though the beds were very comfortable- lulled to sleep by the surf. The cottage was beautiful with all its gleaming wood & windows & wraparound porch. It's decorated with a very pretty easy-beachy style & has a/c & ceiling fans to keep it comfortable all day. I definitely think this property is a vacation rental winner- just steps from the ocean, white sand beach & surprisingly few mosquitos due to the constant ocean breeze. Whether you want to relax, fish, shell or catch blue crab for dinner, this is the place to be! * For folks who haven't been to Dog Island I do suggest a few things to note b4 you go- the cell phone service is a little changeable so you may have to wander the porch to find a good signal but our teens always had service w/at&t- take all your food & supplies, there is no store on the island- the ferry only runs 4 days a week but Capt. Russell "Rusty" Cahoon also does charter trips & was so nice to pick up a few things that we needed from the groc store in Carrabelle- he's a great guy!- the well water is a little "tan" colored but fine- there isn't a full size oven but a large microwave/convection oven & a cooktop with griddle were more than enough for us- washer dryer provided but no dishwasher but that's what kids are for, right? (lol)- no satellite tv but vcr/dvd/stereo provided w/movies & a good mix of music although I preferred the music of the ocean & the view of stars so bright & close you could almost touch them. I can only say THANK YOU to the Van Lieres & the friendly not-too-close neighbor "Doggers" for sharing this fantastic island getaway with us & we will be back as soon as possible ! (the selfish me wanted to write a horrible review to keep this place a secret from the world but I was too happy there not to share- Go, Relax & Enjoy !!)

Most excellent!

March 30, 2011

Pictures posted are true to life. It was an absolute paradise. We had the beach nearly to ourselves, which were clean and beautiful. Absolutely dreamlike to wake up and look out through the large glass windows at a gorgeous sunrise and pods of dolphin. The house was well equipped and the owners gave a lot of thought to what we might need. It takes a little planning to stay because you "can't even buy a coca cola" on the island. So, everything needs to be brought with you but well worth the effort. The owners offered to run in to town for anything we might have forgotten. Jim was a delight to meet, as was his beautiful wife. We will definitely be staying there again.
