Since no bridge connects Dog Island to Carrabelle, you leave your vehicle in the Dog Island ferry parking lot and charter a boat to and from the island. Our neighbor runs a charter service for about $70 each way for a group of 6 people or less. Upon arrival at the island, our truck is available to you for transportation to the house and back to the dock.
We generally rent the house for one week minimum stays; occasionally we rent for a shorter amount of time of at least 3 days. You are expected to clean the house upon leaving or you can arrange for our neighbor to do it for about $85.
Renting is generally discouraged on the island so it is extremely important that all guests abide by all island and house rules which include:obeying the 25mph speed limit in our truck and driving only to and from the house, lights-out for turtles May-September,recycle glass and plastic, no fires, no fireworks, no trespassing on Dog Island Yacht Club docks or parking area. Absloutley no pets or smoking at the house.
Area Information
Do you like to eat really fresh seafood? The fishing is great! Frequently there are also clams, blue crabs and coquinas in abundance. For star gazers, the night sky is magnificent, especially from the roost. If you're a beach comber, you can walk all around the 6 mile island; if you're a bird lover, expect to see eagles, osprey, brown pelicans & terns among the 300 identified species.

Peaceful escape
November 29, 2012
My sister and I recently had the opportunity to stay at Rosanne's beautiful waterfront home. The weather was perfect and the views from the home are mesmerizing. We enjoyed listening to the surf in the evenings, walking the beaches and collecting shells and sand dollars, but mostly enjoyed the solitude. Rosanne's house has everything you could need to enjoy the magic of Dog Island. I look forward to my next visit!

Beyond Paradise...
October 8, 2012
I hate to let the cat out of the bag, but October is the best month to visit the Florida Panhandle. This past weekend was truly better than paradise. The sky was magnificent, the water, clear and smooth, the air, warm and dry. Perfection. We joked all weekend about "what we should not do next," meaning Rosi's Roost is the perfect place to enjoy this pristine paradise, doing everything or nothing at all. The house is beautiful, comfortable and very well-equipped. (You won't need to bring nearly as much stuff as we did, but make sure to bring people you like because you will rarely see anyone else on the island.) I especially loved the collection of original beachy artwork, particularly the stained glass mermaid window! The only downside of Rosi's Roost is that you will never want to leave, so close your eyes, click your heels together, and repeat three times, "I want to be on Dog Island." Experience the magic.

Great Time
October 5, 2012
From loading ALL of our stuff onto the ferry and boating to the island to watching the last sunset from the roost after a day of finding incredible seashells and viewing the wildlife, we really had an amazing time! Very relaxing, and it was quite a thrill borrowing a truck and finding our way to the house on this beautiful island. The house itself was very inviting and comforting, showing a little age of course, but we felt right a home, even more amenities available than I expected! We certainly plan a return visit very soon with our children so they can experience nature, and the beach, in a whole new way.

Paradise..............
October 1, 2012
We stayed the 3rd week of September and had an amazing time. It was the most peaceful vacation that I had ever taken. It was nice to forget about everything except the present moment . The house was beautiful and had everything that we needed. We did not see anyone else until Friday and that was a couple walking by on the beach. We spent a quite week reading books, walking the shores, collecting shells (some very large), and fishing. My two older son's 22 and 17 enjoyed the kayaks. My 8 yr old son enjoyed it all. The stars at night are amazing. We were disapointed that the sea turtle eggs did not hatch on our watch. The only thing I have suggest to future guests is take more junkfood. Everyone seemed to be hungrier at the beach. My three boys went through the snacks and chips pretty fast. You do not have to take drinking water, the water tastes great. We did not want to leave this new found paradise. We will definitely be back in the near future. Thank you Rosi for allowing us to stay at your wonderful home on Dog Island.

Relaxing.....
September 19, 2012
If you want to get away from it all...Dog Island is the place. This is the third year that we have stayed at "The Roast". The house is one of the nicest places to stay. You can climb to the roof and see all over the island, lie on the beach only moments from the house, walk the beach in peace and quiet, and listen to waves at night from the master bedroom. The house has everything that you might need including a wonderful hot tub for the evening stars. Wow what a place...relaxing, peaceful, and one of few secluded places left in Florida without the craziness!!!!

Paradise
August 28, 2012
If you would like to get away from the hustle and bustle then this is the vacation home for you. Secluded is the best word to describe it, but with a house stocked with everything you will need for your stay. It rained a little the first couple of days on our trip, but soon after the sun came out and stayed out the rest of our time there. The boys loved paddling around in the kayaks, catching crabs, exploring and fishing. My daughter and I enjoyed walking the beach and searching the surf for those large perfect shells which are abundant on the island. The wild life is amazing. Bring your camera. We saw numerous species of birds, sting rays, various types of fish, hermit crabs, a large horseshoe crab and conch shell snail creatures. A group of dolphins even swam by one day. We watched them jump and play for awhile. The house is beautiful. The kids had there own area upstairs and I had my own space downstairs. The water filtration system saved us from having to carry a lot of water to the island. It made plenty of taste free drinkable water for the time were were there. The stereo and speaker system are really nice. Don't forget to bring your favorite cds or you can just listen to the radio like we did. There is a fantastic view of the ocean from just about every room and deck space galore. You will never see the stars as brightly anywhere as you will from the roost. Be sure to spray down before going out at night because the mosquitoes like the night air too. The white crabs that like to scurry around the beach at night can be caught and steamed or boiled, if you like crab. Be sure to wade out to the sandbars and check out the shells or just hang out and fish. The water is fairly clear and the sand is soft and white unlike that of the eastern coast beaches I have visited. We enjoyed our time at Rosi's Roost and will definitely go back. Next time we hope to stay longer. A week just wasn't long enough.

Amazing Adventure!
June 27, 2012
This was our second trip to Rosi's Roost...one we will never forget! The first seven days were relaxing, peaceful, and carefree. The house has every amenity you could ask for; everything but your food and clothes are provided. You can see that the owners take care of this home. It is very well maintained and the care is evident in all of the new items. The new truck was great and holds more in the bed. The house had new chairs, new umbrellas, new screen doors, wifi access, and many other updated items. We couldn't have asked for a nicer, more relaxing week. However, our week was extended due to Tropical Storm Debbie. Not part of the plan! Our charter out on Sunday morning was canceled due to high winds. The storm really caught us off gaurd! A mandatory evacuation order was issued, but no boats could reach us. The house shook and rattled. The wind whistled through the windows and water was starting to make its way through the troughs in the sliding doors. The waves at high tide made it to the steps that lead to the beach. We watched a large dune in front of a neighboring house crumble and erode. Several large sections of decks, stairs, and other structures floated by in the screaming rip current. The house itself lost some siding, soffits, and shingles. Throughout the storm, Rosanne kept in close contact with us. She was quite concerned about our safety. On Monday morning, Vicki Vose came to the house (phones were not working) to let us know boats were coming to take us back to Carrabelle. Several island residents were at the docks to help us to the boats quickly. We arrived safely back at the dock, a little wet, but unharmed. It was a memorable vacation, one my kids will never forget! Can't wait to visit next year!

Rosi's Roost
May 28, 2012
If you're into condos, pools, lazy rivers, crowded beaches, restaurant lines and traffic, Dog Island isn't for you. If you're hunting a pristine sugar white sandy beach with seashells galore, shore birds, dolphins and few people, come to Rosi's Roost! When I unlocked the front door and entered, I knew I was in someone's beloved beach HOME. It wasn't fussy and pretentious but comfortably furnished, clean and neat. Consider how much potable water you would need to haul if the place you rent doesn't have a water purification system like Rosi's does! (Don't forget the water you would need to make clean ICE too!) Great library of books, music, and movies. Had covered deck areas where I could "hide" when the sun was just too hot but I still wanted to be outside. Capt Russell Cahoon accommodated us with ferry transport exactly when we wanted it. Having lived on the island, he was a wealth of info. Do stop in Panacea or Carrabelle and buy fresh seafood. You may be able to catch your own but just in case, you'll enjoy wonderful seafood dinners. Rosi, I'm so happy you share this place! S. Snead

Tranquil, Serene, Peaceful, and Spiritual
March 15, 2012
The Dog Islands of the Florida panhandle are slowly disappearing. As the "Lost Shore" is found, it steps into demand for fine housing, shopping, urban restaurants, imported foods, and a lot of paving and lights. Dog Island is what is first saw as a child around Panama City and what Sunnyside many years ago. Nothing fancy but just sand and serf and good neighbors. During our week in early March, fishing was poor, the water was cold, there was a strong wind (we could not take out our fishing boat) that was often cold, and when the wind relented, the mosquitos and noseeums attacked-----all just like I remembered. It was wonderful and different from but better than we expected. What happened was that we evolved into a state of splendid peace. A migrating monarch was an exciting event (even more than the twice a day nude bather) and the height of the day was a visit to the hot tup to watch the fiery sunset and massive harvest moon rise. It was not so much what we did or even what there was to do but what happened to our mood, our living, our spirit, perhaps even our soul. Rosanne's instructions and furnishings are wonderfully complete. We brought food and such stuff, planning to make a trip back to Carrabelle later but we never left for the entire week. The "new" four wheel drive truck is great and will be better after a little fine tuning of the battery cables. If you don't know how to use a four wheel gear, ask Rosanne, although I expect she will have a paragraph in it for latter. By the way, cell phones work very well (we had AT&T and Vorizen). We really enjoyed the old movies and great old CDs----we watched one old movie after dinner almost every night. Sleeping is no problem, although you may have to get used to the rattling and bumping in the main floor king room (I said we had some strong winds). By the way, we came down a day early to spend some time in Carrabelle. That was fun and very rewarding----we covered every inch and met a bunch of wonderful people. By the way, Dick is a great guy and a lot of fun and Russell is too. Because of scheduling times, we rode over and back with Russell, He wouldn't let us help with bags or anything and is full of information and stories. Thanks Rosanne for sharing your place with us.
Owner's reply:
I love that you "evolved into a splendid state of peace" while at Rosi's Roost. I was just there for St. Patrick's Day; we must have kissed the Blarney stone just right. The temperatures were in the 80's, we swam and frolicked and our neighbor caught a 25 pound red fish right before our eyes! So glad you enjoyed yourselves and got to watch that beautiful full moon from the hot tub. Our highlight was being able to see the whole night sky with Mars, Jupiter and Venus shining brightly.

I took my shoes off at the door on Sunday and did not put them back on until we left the island on Saturday! A great week at Rosi's Roost! This is one vacation that will leave a lifetime of memories for my family. The house is great! We played several of the many games that are at the house and read several books from the library. Getting from the dock to the house in the pickup truck was quite an adventure too :) We saw dolphins, eagles and butterfly's galore. The beach was great and the sunsets over the bay were incredible to watch. We hope to return soon!

Words Can Not Explain
October 19, 2011
Words can not explain exactly what a wonderful spot this is for a vacation. When we were attempting to find an area to vacation at that was quiet and out of the way we stumbled upon Rosanne's site and immediately knew this was where we had to go. Our family had been through a very stressful two years to say the least and we just wanted to be able to get away from the world for a little while and take some time for each other, little did we know that would be exactly what we were going to do. We requested to be guests in Rosanne's home approximately six months in advance and there were a few occasions when I allowed myself to think that maybe it wasn't a good idea to be quite so secluded. I am so glad I ignored those thoughts. The three of us including my 5 year old son experienced the time of our lives. We saw dolphins on a daily basis along with various other types of sea life. The home is absolutely beautiful with every little extra you could possibly hope for and the surroundings are indescribable. We began talking of our return to Dog Island before our vacation time even ended. We were able to spend a week on Dog Island and when it was time to take leave we felt a little heart sick over having to go back to the routine of hectic. It is very true that you will often be the only people on the beach, which is an amazing experience all in its own. I was concerned that my 5 year old may grow board being away from home for so long, but I can honestly say he had a blast. We chartered Russell for our boat ride over and back and he made the beginning and the end of the trip a very pleasant experience. My son is affected by autism and Russell was the perfect person to choose. My son absolutely loved him and turned out to have a very enjoyable time on the boat trip. We had feared that we may have some difficulty in that area, but Russell's demeanor soothed everyone's nerves. I can't imagine starting our vacation off when anyone else. Thank you Rosanne for allowing us to be guests in your home. The memories of our seven days we spent on Dog Island will be a point of conversation for years to come and I am certain that the only way to top our vacation in your home is to come back and relive it again. My husband and I stayed at Rosie's Roost and had a wonderful time. It wasn't a house on the beach, it was a home on the beach. We felt so comfortable and relaxed, with no stress. Rosie made us feel like we were part of her family. The view of the ocean from every window is breath taking along with the sound of the waves only steps away. If you want to get away from your everyday life, this is the only place to be. We want to thank you Rosie for sharing your home with us. We look forward to staying at your place again.

Wonderful
August 4, 2011
My husband and I stayed at Rosie's Roost for a week with our two children, a ten year old and a three year old. We had a hassle free, easy going vacation. Relaxation was the word for the week. Rosie's Roost is clean and well equipped. There was not a single thing we needed in the house or for the beach that was not available. Dick Vose was fantastic as well- he met us in Carabelle and on Dog Island for both of our ferry trips. We are already talking about going back. We loved it.

The BEST!
July 3, 2011
We understood and expected the adventure part, but the whole experience was first rate. We have rented over 20 beachfront houses, but this was by far the best. We expected heat, but not the great breezes that blew constantly like North Carolina. It not only made it tolerable, but enjoyable to be outside. The water was clear and warm and complemented the white, powdery sand. We can only reiterate the reviews of others concerning the privacy, the quiet, the sunrises, sunsets, and billions of stars! Rosi's Roost is truly a one of a kind experience that our whole family will never forget.

RELAXATION
June 14, 2011
Had a great time swimming, fishing, and family time. Wonderful house with everything that you need. This was our second time to rent this house. Enjoyed nature- birds, saw where sea turtles laid eggs, dolphins. Very quite and relaxing after a busy school year- great way for the family to reconnect.

Rosi's Roost rests on a Florida beach that is still wild ! It's an amazing place full of the sounds of the sea with people few and far between. You'll want to be outside as much as possible – walking the beach, swimming in the clear water, watching the birds from the deck, admiring the sunset from the roost atop the house, collecting shells on the beach and nearby bay, soaking in the moon and stars from the hot tub, grilling on the screened porch or watching a storm roll in under its protective roof. Inside the house, you'll enjoy the spacious, open and artistic atmosphere. You only have to lift your head to look through the many windows at the beauty that surrounds you. Rosi has thought of everything that could possibly make your stay comfortable and fun – incredible CD collection and sound system, all the DVDs you could ever watch, a jam-packed game closet, and the kitchen ! – The kitchen is stocked with all of the items and tools to make delicious meals to share with your vacation companions. You won't want to go home and you certainly will be looking for opportunities to come back !

My paradise, home away from home....
October 25, 2010
It has been a month since I've returned from this amazing paradise and I miss it so much! The island was very secluded. It was like we had our own little paradise. Roseanne, you have an amazing home. It felt as if it was my home away from home. Dog Island is the most relaxing vacation I have EVER had. The island is very peaceful, as if you become one with God. Breath taking views from the upper deck. Honestly, the view's from the house is all around breath taking. We walked to the sound, absolutely beautiful! We did see a shark and a hammer head. It was rather exciting to see. The stingray's were awesome to see as well. We caught our own bait for fishing and there were many blue crab's for good eating. My Boyfriend had an experience catching a rather large stingray. We never had a dull moment. The hot tub was so relaxing during the evening gazing at the star's and listening to the ocean. It was all most as if you could touch the star's. I am into photography and was excited to capture some memorable moment's, bird's, scenery, the tree's were even fascinating, and some of the most amazing sunset's I have ever seen. We are planning another trip and I can not wait to return. I have definately found my home away from home. Thank you Roseanne for sharing such a beautiful place with us! Hope you enjoyed the pic's I sent.

9 Days of Sanctuary!
September 14, 2010
We thoroughly enjoyed our 9-day stay on Dog Island. From the moment we left the mainland, we could feel the stress and tension of the real world melting away from our bodies as we embarked on an island adventure that did not require us to wear shoes, watch or smart phone. We spent most of our waking hours on the beach, playing in the warm Gulf waters, fishing, building sand castles and just soaking up the beautiful sunshine while taking in the rare natural beauty that may only be found of lightly developed barrier island. In the evenings we would carry the bounty that we gathered from the sea (blue crabs & fish) and head up to the beach house to enjoy a cool drink and feast on the incredibly fresh seafood dinner we collected. After dinner we often headed to the balcony to watch the a gorgous sunset slip below the horizon in the west and wait in anticipation for the ultimate encore of a night star filled with twinkling stars and the occassional comet. The nine days we spent together as a family will always be cherished as time spent with God's fullest blessing. We highly recommend staying at this Dog Island beachfront home, just not the first week of September, because we plan to go back again next year!

Grateful for Experience
September 7, 2010
We are so grateful to have had this experience, staying on Dog Island in your beautiful home. We have dreamed of staying on Dog Island for more than 10 years. No stores, no traffic, no noise. Freedom from cities and towns. Being embraced by nature, surrounded by Florida Rosemary and Calamint. We basked with sand dollars and Olies, a diversity of shore birds, stars and constellations, sunsets from an amazing perch, all manner of ocean life, long dinners, deep rest, gourmet dinners prepared in your kitchen with windows to island glory. The views to the Gulf and the estuary are a gift to behold. This felt more like being a guest in your home than staying at a standard vacation rental. We enjoyed glimpsing your personality through your collections of art, music, and books. Thank you for enabling us to stay here. We cherish the experience and hold the memories dear. - North Georgia Three

Pristine!
August 22, 2010
What a special place to return to every year, Rosanne! Thank you! And, what a relief that this slice of heaven has been UNTOUCHED by the Deep Water Horizon Spill. The water was as pure and the sand as white as it was in my boyhood 42 years ago, the crabs were in absolute abundance and the dolphins chased Dick's "ferry" just as they did the car ferry of yesteryear. Some things surely should never change!

This was truly paradise. We stayed 4 nights and saw only 4 other people while on the beach. We've been to Maui 3 times and Rosie's is where we will return. So secluded and quiet. Her home is so comfortable. I feel I know her after seeing all of the family pictures displayed around the house. We can't wait to return.

Refreshing
April 30, 2010
We stayed 9 days & 8 nights at Rosi’s Roost had a wonderful time. The house is comfortable and well equipped; you only need to bring your food, sunscreen & clothing. We caught 6 different types of fish and a sting ray. This island is a shell collectors DREAM! I also found several intact sand dollars. I photographed the wonderful landscape and sunsets. We fished, kayaked, walked, talked, & enjoyed one another’s company. This was our second time staying at Rosi’s and we were talking about our next trip as soon as we returned home. Our last stay was at the end of summer & we had the entire beach to ourselves. We did have people staying in the houses on each side of us this time & saw people walking each day, but we never did hear them. If peace & quiet is what you are seeking, Rosi’s Roost is the place for you; no bars, no stores, no street lights, no loud partying; just peace, quiet & those you bring with you. We can’t wait to return! Thank you Rosi for allowing us to stay in your wonderful home.

Serenity, Solitude and Sharks...
October 14, 2009
Well, mostley just said sharks to get your attention. We had a lovely experience at this location. Very private area. Enjoyed surf fishing and digging for sand fleas (bait). Photographed sunrise every morning from the beach and one of three decks. Enjoyed our freshly caught red fish and other fish we caught. beautiful white sand. great place for the independant sort. Bring everything you need, no provisions on the island except what you catch, and I think the alligator are off base. Lots of beautiful pelican, seagulls, beach crab, butterflies, and dragonflies (mysquetoe hawks). Comfy bed in master suite. Cell reception was good. No internet except on cell phone good for checking weather radar. I plan to go back as soon as I can. Loved it. Recommend it? Absolutely. Leave only your footprints, we want to keep it pristine. The ferry is running again. Enjoy.

Peace & Quiet!
August 30, 2009
We spent four nights and five days at Rosi’s Roost. Even though we had thunderstorms two of the days, we truly enjoyed our stay. Being Native Floridians we were aware of the chance of thunderstorms at this time of year, so we brought movies and books just in case. It was so peaceful and relaxing. The only other person we encountered was the Ferry boat captain. We had the entire beach to ourselves! We took long walks and I collected shells. I you like peace & quiet, no stores, no bars & no people; this is the place for you! We can’t wait to return!

Going back!
August 16, 2009
We will not tell you what we really think- if we did we might not be able to reserve a week next year! Nearly deserted- walked for miles seeing 1 or 2 people. Swimming in the bay within 50 feet of 6 dolphins. House was nicer than described. Sand is very soft and fine. WOW! Well worth the 17 hour drive.

Luxury Camping Beach Style
July 27, 2009
I titled the review Luxury Camping Beach Style because that is exactly how our experience was on Dog Island. We caught Bluefish and had it for dinner one night which was awesome! Lights completely out by 9 PM for the sea turtles, so you can really see all of the stars and beautiful night sky! A sea turtle actually built her nest right beside the house the first night. Fishing wasn't the best while we were there, but we did manage to catch a bunch of blue crabs as well that I made a really good dish with cheese, bell peppers and tomatoes and spices. The last morning, we watched dolphins play and swim right in front of our beach area. It was really cool! That went on for almost an hour. Privacy was great as we pretty much had the entire beach to ourselves the whole time. Maybe saw 4 people or so one or two days but they were a ways from us. We collected a ton of really cool shells. Great experience for the whole family and we will be going back!

Almost paradise
June 21, 2009
My family of 5 stayed on Dog Island for 6 wonderful days and nights. We found the house to be exactly as advertised/described and very comfortable. Everything was in good working condition. We did have a slight problem with water pressure but Rosi told us who to call and it was fixed right away. The water was warm and the waves were just big enough for our kids (10, 8, and 6). The sand was incredible - soft and thick!! We took advantage of the inflatable kayak and fishing poles on site. While I didn't get to explore the entire island I did take several long walks and encountered less than a dozen other people!! We will definitely be returning to Dog Island in the future. Thank's, Rosi, for this opportunity!!!

ISLAND RETREAT
May 31, 2009
What a wonderful place. The island is beautiful and the house was great. The "Turtle Lights" in the Living/Dining areas were perfect. The wildlife was a photographers dream. There was a bear spotted a few houses down, we have pictures of dolphins jumping in the ocean, following our boat back to Carrabelle, an alligator in Tyson's Harbour, and more birds than I can identify. It has been along time since I have seen so many shells on a beach. The fishing was great. The weather did not stop us at all. We have plans in the future to return.

Just the way we like it.
April 14, 2009
We had a great time. The beach house is fantastic and we found it clean and in very good condition considering the environment and the remote location. We came for the environment and were not disappointed in the least way. The beaches are great. White sand, shells, sea-oats, dunes, and typical island scrub bush. Fishing was so good we never took time to explore the interior. While fishing in the surf, we caught bluefish, redfish, flounder, black drum, spotted trout, pompano, Stingray, catfish and kingfish. It was amazing. Best time was at high tide and sunset. This place is for the adventurous, the environmentalist, and the outdoorsperson. Not for the pampered or picky. The island is rustic and isolated. No shopping, no traffic, no bars, no restaurants, no crowds. Just the way we like it.

Your own private island retreat

My family and I stayed at Rosi's Roost for 3 nights and found it to be positively captivating. During the height of Spring Break vacation in the Gulf coast region of Florida in March, we only passed 2 other people on the sugar sand beaches of remarkable Dog Island. This home is fully equipped, comfortable for both children and adults, and in excellent condition. All you need to bring is food, sunscreen, and a readiness to make indelible memories on a glorious island you will have virtually to yourself! Our children had a fantastic time as we kayaked with porpoises, walked along the shores of both the Gulf and the Apalachicola Bay, and enjoyed the jacuzzi overlooking a moonlit sea! We truly cannot wait to return! Solitude awaits.
