Description of the Dog Island vacation home rental
(Allergy free house, no pets.)

Master bedroom with 1 full bed & private bath
The other 2 bedrooms have 1 full bed in each room
A pickup truck is provided to get to and from the ferry dock
Since no bridge connects Dog Island to Carabelle, you leave your vehicle in the Dog Island ferry parking lot and charter the Ferry to and from the island. Charter service is available for about $70 each way for a group of 6 people or less. Upon arrival at the island, our truck is available to you for transportation to the house and back to the dock.
We rent the house from Friday-Friday or Sunday-Sunday. Occasionally we rent for a shorter amount of time. You are expected to clean the house upon leaving or we can have someone go over to clean for $100.00.

For star gazers, the night sky is magnificent, especially with no city lights to diminish your view. If you're a beach walker, there are sea shells everywhere. Nice wide beaches to walk. You can walk all around the 6 mile island; if you're a bird lover, expect to see eagles, osprey, brown pelicans & terns among the 300 identified species.

Hello Al and Tom, Just a quick note to thank you for our week at your home on Dog Island. I grew up in Florida as a child in the 60's and have amazing memories of old Florida. Coming to your island now after 4 children and 27 years of marriage was one of the happiest times for me as the memories flooded back of what things were like and what they still could be. My wife and I spent 7 days together alone and had the best time. Long walks, great wine and good food mixed with incredible scenery, dolphins just off the beach and fishing in the surf left us refreshed and looking for property on the island. The home is beautiful, clean and comfortable and is well stocked. The perfect place to rent. We cleaned the windows to keep the view as beautiful as we found it. A wonderful place to get away from it all. The beach house was charming and comfortable. We felt right at home. This was our first stay there and we would love to go back. The house is well stocked so it allows you to travel light , which was really great. The owner, Al was very kind and we felt like he genuinely hoped we enjoyed ourselves. We really hated to leave!

Great Vacation!!

Just got back from our week on Dog island! Were so sad to see the week come to an end. We had an awesome time! The house had everything we needed and then some! Captain Russell was a wonderful source of info on the ride over! We had thought we would go back to the mainland on Wednesday but when it arrived, we decided to just relax and stay on island! One thing I would tell people, bring bug spray! They weren't bad except at night. We would coat up before we went to catch/chase crabs. Loved all the shells we found! One day I found 10 whole sand dollars on the beach! Also, overestimate the food you need! We cut it pretty close (plus our kids hit the junk food pretty hard the first few days!) Wish we had taken a few more sweets! There is ice at the fire station for $2.00 if you need that. I just loved not having to do anything when I woke up. The house had a satellite with movie channels so on the few days it rained (and on the super hot ones) we'd all pile up and watch TV. My kids, aged 11 and 19 had a blast! We saw maybe 15-20 people on the beach the whole week we were there. I absolutely loved the seclusion. Definately plan on going back again soon!

Beautiful House - Great Experience

The house is wonderful, situated on a high sand dune directly on the beach. The views of the Gulf from inside the house and the deck are breathtaking. The house is well designed, roomy and bright, and VERY CLEAN. The house is fully equipped. Everything that you could ever want or need is already there. From beach umbrellas to charcoal for the grill to detergent for the washing machine to a large water cooler—absolutely anything you can think of you will find. Dog Island is beautiful, perfect for a great family vacation or a romantic get-away. This island and this house are all that you could ever ask for. Al, the owner, is a great guy. He will work with you and do everything in his power to make your stay enjoyable. We encountered Tropical Storm Debby the day before we were supposed to leave. The 60 mile-per-hour winds and 17 foot waves made it impossible for us to get off the Island. We were stranded in the house for 2 days as the wind howled and waves crashed on the beach, splashing as high as the tops of the sand dunes. Al called to make sure that we were OK and told us that there would be no additional charges for our extended stay. The wind gusts blew so hard that you could see and feel the walls of the house bulging inward. The whole house rocked back and forth like a ship at sea. The wind howled non-stop. The large bell outside the house sounded like a giant alarm clock as the clapper slammed back and forth in the wind. Even so, we remained safe, dry, and sound inside the house. It was a little scary, but mostly it was an exciting adventure. At one point the power went out for about 4 hours. My first thought was to find a flashlight. To reinforce my statement about how well the house is equipped, I stopped looking after I found three DOZEN flashlights and two lanterns. There were also canned goods in the pantry. When the storm finally moved on we checked the outside of the house. There was no damage. The house is as solid as a rock. We used Captain Rusty (Russell Cahoon) to get to and from the Island. On our trip back to the mainland there were still huge swells, gusting winds, spray, and fog. It was scary. Rusty handled the boat masterfully. After that experience I will never trust anyone else. If you want privacy, peace, tranquility, beautiful white beaches, and turquoise water, visit this Island, and rent this house.

Island paradise

This is a very well maintained , clean and comfortable beach home. Tastefully decorated, the kitchen is well equipped, plus there is a large charcoal grill outside. The beds were quite comfortable. It was very relaxing spending our days on the beach looking for sea shell treasures,or on the shaded porch, watching the pelicans, dolphins and waves. We will definitely be back!

We were very pleased with the house we rented. The house was very clean and well stocked. It had everything we needed for our family vacation. Just bring your food for your stay. The kids loved the beach and just hanging out of the deck. My husband loved the fishing. I enjoyed a good book while sitting on the beautiful beach. Great family time. We brought along our own movie and enjoy family movie night every night. A great house just to get away for our busy lives.

From the homeowner, Mr. Russell, to the accommodations, this vacation was amazing! Serene, quiet, peaceful, and beautiful are just a few of the words that describe Dog Island. We were looking for a quiet out of the way place for vacation this year, and Dog Island delivered. From the hundreds of shells we found to the pleasure of having the beach to ourselves, this was the most amazing vacation we have ever had. Mr. Russell was so accommodating and helpful. The home itself was immaculate and so well stocked. It was like being at home. This vacation spot is for a family or couple that is looking for a quiet place to be together and discover "treasures" from one end of the island to the other. We walked miles and miles and never tired of it. The island is beautiful and the shells are amazing. I could go on and on, but to simply put it, if you are looking for a relaxing vacation in a beautiful home on a beautiful beach, this is the place for you. Vacation bliss!

This was a perfect vacation AWAY from a busy daily routine! We arrived and all was just as the owner Al said. The home was immaculate, located on the perfect beach site for sunbathing on the deck, or fast access to the beach. Everything needed except food and personal items were available at the home, just as promised. We hated to leave, having enjoyed the peaceful strolls along the sugary sandy beach, finding many sea shells, walking in water as clear as water in Fiji, and seeing dolphins playing right outside our door! If one desires rest, this is definitely the place to vacation!

We enjoyed our stay in this comfortable home, especially the lack of neighbors. It was quiet and the beach was terrific. We saw dolphins and lots of birds. Loved walking on the beach in search of shells.

This was our first trip to Dog Island, we are hoping to make it a new yearly vacation destination spot. Absolutely, without a doubt the best vacation we have ever had. My husband, like so many these days, works 60-70 hour work weeks, he has always preferred to stay home when able rather than to go to a tourist spot. He simply cannot relax at your typical vaca spots. Here at Dog Island, he had his first truly relaxing vacation. The peace and tranquility was a plus for us adults and the children had a blast on the private beach. Swimming in the beautiful ocean, exploring the beach and hunting for shells and boy did we find them. Our prized find was a 10 inch whelk shell, priceless. We saw a totalt of maybe 15 people the full week we were there. The home we stayed in far surpassed our expectations, it was beautiful, clean and fully stocked. I could go on and on raving about this wonderful treasure that we are so pleased to have found. I would highly recommend not only Dog Island, but also the vacation home. Al Russell, the home owner, was exremely kind, friendly, helpful and patient. Thanks to him and his wife for allowing us this experience, we will always remember it as the best vacation the Watson Family has had. I would also like to make a little side note about Captain Russell the ferry boat driver, he was very accomodating in helping us to and from the island and very friendly, a perfect way to start and end our adventure. :)
