Area Information

Dog Island is the eastern-most part of a chain of fragile barrier Islands located off the Northern Panhandle of Florida. It is only accessible by boat, ferry or small airplane. The Island is 6.8 miles in length and half of it is owned and protected by the Nature Conservancy. The Island is a bird sanctuary and a nesting habitat for sea turtles.

We have owned homes on Dog Island for 43 years. Nothing has changed in all of this time. The shelling and bird watching are excellent. The fishing is excellent as well. You must bring all of your food because thankfully!-- there are still NO stores. Be prepared to be completely relaxed and one with nature and your family. The only distraction here is a big fish on your line!

What can I say?

April 18, 2013

This place is DA BOMB! as they say. Total paradise, & complete relaxation. This is as comfortable and peaceful as it gets. The beach is amazing white sand/emerald water. Loved it to pieces. Perfect location for family Spring Break. Beth Anne and Jon are gracious hosts & are very responsive to your needs. This is truly a perfect getaway to get away from it all. You can do a little fishing from shore, shell collecting, sunbathing too and that is not all, but you can do nothing at all if you choose. Don't forget all your food & drink as this island is for relaxation & seclusion so there are no stores or restaurants. You get here by boat or plane. The house is well equipped like home with cooking utensils, linens, towels, etc. We grilled out every night. It is an adorable beach bungalow that provided just what you need-VACAY in Paradise! And you can fall asleep to the sounds of the crashing waves Zzzz! Don't forget the gorgeous sunsets! This is a natural area-so not the clubbing, shopping metro like here. It's just AWESOME! sAND, sUN and sECLUSION Salve for the Soul! Have fun! Thank you! Enjoyed it so much!

Beth Anne B.

Owner's reply:

Your family is so much fun-You really took advantage of all the Island had to offer! Come back soon and thanks for leaving the house so organized and clean!

Absolute Paradise

March 29, 2013

Our stay at this beautiful beachfront home was absolutely amazing! From the moment I inquired about the house, Beth Anne has been extremely responsive and easy to work with. As for the house itself, it is even better than the pictures portray! The house is immaculately clean, tastefully decorated with beach accents, and feels like "home". The beds were very comfortable and the favorite room for our children was the sunroom. Our kids slept in the sunroom so that they could see the ocean and hear the waves every night. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils and had everything that we needed to cook meals every day; however, for most of our meals, we used the charcoal grill (remember to bring charcoal and lighter fluid). We loved the hammock downstairs and the private boardwalk to the ocean! As for the Island, we felt like we had the entire island to ourselves! It is peaceful, beautiful, and the shells are AMAZING! There were plenty of chairs to take to the beach. We did not have much luck fishing; however, a cold front came in during the time we were here. Our kids loved the kayaks (remember to bring life jackets) and walking up and down the beach looking for shells. On a side note, we were lucky to have Beth Anne on the Island for our visit, so we were greeted with a HUGE redfish that we grilled for dinner on our first night. We felt like family, and that is the best compliment anyone can receive. The entire property is well maintained and clean. We felt very comfortable and relaxed here. It is a place that everyone needs to visit at least once in their lifetime! You really need to visit and stay at this property to really appreciate the word "paradise". Just remember to pack enough groceries for your stay (there are no shops or restaurants on the Island - which in our opinion is a major PLUS!)

Loved This Place

Two families stayed in Beth Anne's house for Spring Break. Could not have had better hosts or a better experience. Dog Island is like no other place I have ever been. From the moment you step off the ferry, you know it's a special place. There are no paved roads or any businesses. The owner's loan you their car for the weekend, but there's really nowhere to go, which is exactly what Dog Island is about. If you want to get away from the rat race and relax, this is the place. Just make sure you bring everything you need (or you'll have to get the ferry captain Russell to make a special delivery). You can walk for hours on the beach and not see anyone. Excellent surf fishing, kayaking, sea shell collecting, bird watching, etc. The house is well maintained and appointed, with all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay. I Beth's home to anyone without reservation and can't wait to go back.

Absolutley Paradise!!

Wow!! Where do I begin to review the perfect beach getaway! If you are looking for a "true" beach vacation(which to me is complete rest and relaxation with no hustle and bustle of a crowd and trying to squeeze in everything you can in a week)....then this is the place for you! My husband and I love this place. We are beach bums at heart so this fits us perfect. Beach views are amazing, fishing is great, screened in porch with adirondack chairs are perfect for reading and drinking morning coffee. Outside shower is AMAZING...no need to shower inside! House is equipped with everything you might need. If you are shell seeker..then you will be in shell paradise. We have found numerous beautiful shells of all kinds Sunrises on beach and sunsets over bay...no words to even try and explain how breathe taking they are!! Great family home or for a couple of beach bums like ourselves! Just keep in mind there is no where on the island to buy ANYTHING (except for ice at the volunteer fire station) so make sure you pack everything you might need as far as food goes. Just pack your swim suit, flip flops, sun screen, and fishing gear and you will be set for the week. (If you get in a tight you can call Captain Russell and he can pick what you need up and you meet him at the dock on his next scheduled run). Beth Anne and Jon are great home owners and we have loved staying in their quaint beach cottage home on "The Dog" ! We are ready to go back soon! Thanks you guys! :)
