Reviews for this vacation home rental in Dog Island, Florida

The best word I can use to describe our family vacation to this property is AMAZING! We stayed for 7 days in this well-loved, well-stocked house and felt right at home the minute we walked through the door. The home is clean, upgraded and so so so quiet. Neither my husband, myself, or our 9 & 10 yr old boys missed one sunrise (on the porch) or sunset (on the beach). The best part about this stay is that you are completely surrounded by nature - not people. We saw fisherman daily on the water and maybe two beach umbrellas the whole week. If you're looking to unplug - this is the place to do it! We all enjoyed the fishing, crab catching and crab hunting at night. My boys didn't even realize there was a TV until about Thursday when it rained. Otherwise we were always fishing at the dock or playing in the surf on the "wavey" side (which is a quick walk down the bay side beach). The variety of wild life both on the island and in the water is just mind-blowing - it was so beautiful to watch. We were a bit worried about the packing required for this trip especially with the boys, however, bringing the food and water was not a problem and Nancy was so helpful in our planning for the trip. If you are looking for an unplugged, quiet vacation - this house is the place to go!

This was our second trip to Dog Island. When we asked our two young sons if they wanted to go to Disney World or Dog Island, they both, without hesitation picked Dog Island. We are a fishing family so it made sense. The fishing was amazing and having a dock was key. Nancy's gorgeous property is in the perfect spot. A 5 minute boat ride to Carrebelle and a short walk to the Gulf. The bay beach in front of the house was amazing. Nancy was wonderful to work with and communicated very clearly and promptly. If you are searching for privacy, serenity, and peace, this is the place for you. There's no place like it. We stayed for two weeks and could have stayed longer. We can't wait to return.

This is not your typical island getaway! Leaving your vehicle on Carrabelle, the approximately 18-minute ferry ride is the beginning of your Dog Island adventure. Surrounded by pine trees instead of palms, and the total absence of any commercialization, Dog Island is part of Florida’s “Forgotten Coast” - truly a hidden treasure. It is a wonderful place to explore in long walks on the beach, collecting shells or observing a variety of water foul as they sun on the pylons of the dock or dive for fish, and catching the occasional glimpse of other island wildlife. It is also a beautiful and relaxing place to just sit out on the deck enjoying the scenery and serenity of your own private beach. The house offers a view of spectacular sunsets and a welcome break from the distractions of Internet and cable TV. It is large and spacious, open, and airy with high ceilings and comfortable furnishings with water views from every window. Remember to take all of your food and beverages, especially be sure to take enough water for drinking and cooking with throughout your stay. Everything else is provided, and the owners, Nancy and Rob, as well as the property's caretakers, are readily available by phone. Although it is called the Forgotten Coast, for my husband and me, our vacation on Dog Island was unforgettable.
Perfect Girls Weekend!
November 5, 2013
We came down for a few days of relaxation with friends and really fell in love - with the Island and this house (first trip but hopefully not the last!). The house is very well equipped and decorated, very clean and comfortable. It doesn't feel like a rental - more like you're staying at the house of a good friend. We enjoyed the multiple layered deck, walked miles along the beach, swam, enjoyed the kayaks and the sunsets. The wildlife is amazing, bald eagles, herons, fish, and dolphins to name just a few that we saw. It takes some planning to stay here since you are bringing all your food and drink but it is well worth it to leave the "real world" behind. My friends and I hope we can arrange a trip again next year and hopefully stay for more than a long weekend.
our new yearly getaway

My sons and I stayed on Dog Island before but this stay was the best. Our stay was well planned thanks to very good communication between us and the owners. The house was clean and well equipped. The fishing was amazing and we loved having the use of the dock. It was quiet and private so we could relax and rest. We will definitely go back and are already planning to rent for next year. Its a great getaway to a great place.

We have very stressful jobs dealing with public, and going to Dog Island is perfect escape. We very much enjoyed our stay . The privacy, the peace and quiet, the house is great and greatly equipped. Also loved hanging out on the dock, only thing missing was a hammock on the covered section of the dock. Our cell phones did not work there and no wifi , That was the best part. Would definitely stay at this home again. Thanks So Much for a great getaway
Dolan, thanks for taking the time to write a review. Glad you enjoyed our home and the break from the demands of real life. We have found cell phone coverage is dependant on the carrier and, believe it or not, where you are located on our property. As you said, that can be good, it allows one to really relax.

I have been here several times and strongly recomend it. Nancy and Rob's Dog Island home is one of the most remarkable retreats I have ever enjoyed. Dog Island itself is a unique and secret treasure; unspoiled and secluded and very much the Gulf Coast at its best. Bring a good camera. It is worth seeing if you never have since it is truly one of the last unspoiled places. Be prepared to walk for miles by the sea on the beach and enjoy the vistas, the birds and the wildlife. It is all stunning and humbling. The house itself is elegant and stylish with a modern retro vibe. . . . but it's all very real and relaxing and wonderfully appointed. The dock is terrific and the fishing is good (I caught Ling Snapper, Trout and Redfish and there are tons of crabs and some Grouper, too). I can' t think of anywhere on the Gulf Coast where you can walk for miles on white sand, beside green water, and see no one at all. (Well, you may see a Porpoise or two). Then, return to watch the sunset from a wrap around deck and retreat to a cool and elegant living room to listen to music on an amazing stereo system. To be sure, this is not a resort hotel . . . it is a true excluse Island home. You must bring what you want to eat and drink (the water is potable but you will want bottled water). But, then you are done. Put your car keys and wallet away and don your bathing suit for a few days a peace and joy. I did not wear a watch or drive for days. Ahhhhhhh. If you are looking for a time away; a time to rest and enjoy nature, the sea and the beach in style and comfort, this is the place.
A week on our own private island!
August 17, 2013
Want to really get away from it all? My wife and daughter rented this beautiful, secluded beach house recently and did not see ANYONE the entire week (except out on the water in boats)! Great kitchen, deck, bath, and living rooms. Private dock and powder white sand beachfront (Bay side. Gulf side beach is a short walk). Bring your own drinking/cooking water as the tap water, while fine for washing and bathing, has an unpleasant taste. A small price to pay for this island getaway. We'll be back soon!
Yes a getaway for sure and glad to know you enjoyed our home and "your private island." Our extensive water purification system makes our water fine for bathing and cooking, and many on the island would consider it fine for drinking, but we do prefer using bottled when it comes to drinking. Even paradise isn't absolutely perfect.
Most relaxing week ever!
July 12, 2013
My wife and I traveled here for our one year wedding anniversary and have the best week ever! From the boat ride over and back, to the awesome fishing from the dock, to the amazing sunset views, it was all we could have asked for an more. The house is extremely comfortable and well equipped. One of the best places we have ever been. We can't wait to bring our young son down for the first time. Hope to go back year after year!

Dog Island is a gorgeous oasis unlike anywhere else we have encountered through many years of tropical island hopping. On the island, any property would be enjoyable, but no other has this setting. Settled back just slightly from the private beach and new dock and away from other homes, cooled by lovely shade trees and sea breezes, perched on a slight incline that provides breathtakingly gorgeous views of sunsets or sunrises from every room, the senses are enlivened and spirits calmed. The house is spacious, open, and exceptionally well maintained and equipped. Obviously, the homeowners love this property and take pride in sharing it with others.

Heaven on earth!

Between the private dock, amazing master bedroom, sunsets unlike any other, and the water views from every window, this place can't be beat. Clean, well-kept, and equipped with everything you'll need so all we had to do was show up and relax! My husband and I will definitely be back.
