Description of the Dog Island vacation home rental
On the beach with King & Queen sized beds, wraparound covered porch, screened outdoor kitchen, breathtaking views, best location on the island!

Welcome to our beach house. Dog Island is located just off the coast of Carrabelle, FL and is like no other place in Florida. Get ready to relax and enjoy the beach and nature. The house is directly on the beach and has a nature preserve on two sides of the property so it is both beautiful and private. The house is a short walk from the Marina or the Airstrip, plus we have a Ford Ranger truck for you to use between the house and these points.

Dog Island is a unique experience. There are no roads or bridges connecting the island to the mainland. Everything comes over by boat or airplane. Development has been limited to private residences and there is no commercial activity on the island. This is a place to relax, renew, and spend quality time with family and friends.

The House:

The house has a covered porch that wraps around the home. The back side (facing the road) is screened and overlooks the harbor, bay, and nature preserve. There is an outdoor kitchen in the screened area with a Big Green Egg (grill / smoker) to cook all your favorite foods. There is a large deck facing the ocean. The porch has Adirondack rockers and chairs on all sides. There is parking and storage under the house.

Bedrooms:

The house has three bedrooms, but sleeps like a four bedroom home:

- Master bedroom has a King bed
- Bedroom #2 has a Queen bed
- Bedroom #3 has a Double and a Queen bed
- Living room has a double Futon that folds out

What's Included:

Bed linens, bath towels, and beach towels
Fully furnished kitchen with plates, utensils, and cookware
Coffee maker and a Keurig machine
Basic condiments
Paper products
Big Green Egg (grill / smoker) with charcoal furnished
First Aid Kit
Beach toys / chairs
Patio tables and chairs
Large screen flat panel TV with satellite, Blue-Ray DVD, and VCR
Refrigerator, microware, blender, toaster oven
Professional grade water filtration system

What to Bring:

Food, what you plan to eat. We keep basic items there. The ferry boat capt. (Rusty) can bring you supplies upon request if you run low. We like to have fresh seafood sent over, just call Capt. Rusty (we will provide his number) and he will meet you at the marina with what you need.

Drinks
Suntan Lotion
Insect Repellant
Swimsuit
Camera
Books

How to Get There:

Most people arrange a private charter from Carrabelle for a small fee. There are several operators to choose from and we will be glad to provide the names and numbers on request. Other people use the scheduled ferry service from Carrabelle and there is also a 2700 x 120 foot airstrip on the island for pilots to utilize.

Check in / Out:

The house is usually rented Saturday to Saturday. Check in is at 2 PM and check out is at 11 a.m. The house will need to be cleaned and linens washed and replaced prior to check out. We keep the house very clean. There is no maid service on the Island, so you will need to leave the house the way you found it, clean.

Other Information:

The house sits on some of the highest sand dunes in Florida. It is critical that you please keep children (and everyone else too) off the sand dunes. These are very fragile and island rules strictly prohibit walking or playing on the dunes.

Renting is generally discouraged on the island so it is extremely important that all guests abide by all island and house rules which include: obeying the 20 mph speed limit in our truck and driving only to and from the house, lights-out for turtles May-September, recycle glass and plastic, no fires, no fireworks, no trespassing on Dog Island Yacht Club docks or parking area. Absolutely NO pets or smoking at the house.

Take a look around the site and let us know if you have any questions.
Area Information
Dog Island is located in the northwestern Florida Gulf coast just 3.5 miles off-shore from Carrabelle, Florida in Franklin County, Florida. The island is partly sheltering St. George Sound and Apalachicola Bay. It's the eastern-most part of a chain of barrier islands located off the northern panhandle of Florida just offshore from where the Crooked River merges into the Carrabelle River and then into St. George Sound. Other barrier islands in this chain include St. Vincent Island, Cape St. George Island, and St. George Island. The island has pristine marshes and forests and miles of unspoiled white sand beaches to explore. The Nature Conservancy owns the bulk of this eastern panhandle island, giving you an idea of just how untouched Dog Island is. For unspoiled beaches that you can enjoy largely by your lonesome year-round, few Florida islands can compare. The 7-mile-long island is accessed by passenger ferry from Carrabelle in the Florida panhandle. There is also an airstrip for private pilots to use and several island residents offer private boat charters for a reasonable fee. You can't bring a car to the 'island that time forgot,' as the roughly 100 locals who live here call their sanctuary, but you're guaranteed quiet beaches with powdered-sugar sand, shells galore and aquamarine waters.

All we dreamed of and more

Three sisters and Mom spent the week walking the beach, visiting and enjoying the beautiful water. Mom (90 this February) was tearful the last day. It so reminded her of growing up in Florida on an island - even going to school in a school boat. All of us will cherish the memories made, hopefully until the visit next year! Thank you Fleming family for sharing your beautiful home.

Ocean view is awesome!

We are just at the end of our week staying at the Fleming house here on Dog Island. First trip for us here, and we are already planning our next trip back. We hope to stay again here at this same house. The Flemings are great hosts and were great to communicate with us if we needed anything at all, before our trip, and while on the island. The Dog island experience has been awesome, and we truly needed and loved the quiet and solitude of being on our own for the week. The house is very comfortable and the wrap-around-porches are ideal for viewing in all directions. We spent a LOT of time on the porch facing the ocean, and hope to view our kids and grandkids at the ocean from this porch next time. I am keeping a daily log of notable points, and have entered in quite a few sightings of various wildlife, several species of birds, dolphins, and more.. I enjoyed watching Osprey actually diving into the ocean and bringing up fish..viewed this right from the front porch. The island has lots of flora and fauna to explore and see by foot as well. Bring a good camera, some good binoculars and you are set. We also fished on the ocean side and bay side with some success. We didn't catch as many fish as we expected, but it just wasn't our time I guess.. Nevertheless, we spent and enjoyed a lot of good fishing time and exploring the island on both sides (ocean and bay side). And of course, walking the beaches are a must and very relaxing. If you are looking for some quiet time and don't mind being on your own and are the self sufficient type, come to Dog Island. I had booked this trip in anticipation of a new experience. The island has not let us down. Our thanks to the Fleming family for the opportunity.

Perfect beach house! If you want sand and surf at your feet with what seems like an entire island to yourself this is the place. I am already scheduling my next vacation for dog island.

Quiet beach getaway with grandkids

Old Florida-style house right on the gulf. Perfect for 4 adults and 2 teenagers who love nature and having homemade dinners with the family every night !! Must bring all food and drink supplies with you over on the ferry since there are no restaurants or cars on the island. If you want beauty and solitude, this is your kind of place!!

Solitude and Peace

Old Florida charm directly on the beach. Loved every moment of our stay here. The house is fully furnished with everything you need plus more (beach chairs, etc). The owner is very attentive and extremely polite. But the best part was the solitude and peace of no commercialization. Nature abounds. Great surf fishing. Can't wait to return.

beach house

We stayed a week at the beach house last year. My son and his family were there also. There were 9 of us there, including 5 children. We slept very comfortable and had plenty of room. The house is fully equipped and everything was very clean and maintained. The view from the porches are incredible, breath taking. The beach is like no other typical beach. Sea shells are large and plentiful, and the surf is great. We saw lots of dolphins, fished a lot and just enjoyed the beauty of the place. There is always a wonderful breeze. I have Verizon phone service and it worked there. We had taken enough food so we had no problems. I made a menu and bought accordingly. There is a grocery store in the area where you board the ferry, so I picked up a few last thought of items there. The boat ride over was fun for the kids too. They loved it and would jump at a chance to go back. Mr. & Mrs. Fleming go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. It is a wonderful experience. Thanks to the Fleming family for a wonderful experience.
