Lakefront House on Beautiful Northern Michigan Lak
$150/night - Fall Special. . . Save $50 per night!
Wow. . . can't believe summer is almost over! After Labor Day, things really get quiet in the North Country. But it is an absolutely great time to be in Northern Michigan and our place will be available until the first week of November or so. Take advantage of this great deal and stay for only $150 per night,( with minimum of 3 nights and maximum of 4 guests, please). E-mail, text or call me with any questions you may have. Thank so much!! Dan
Much of the lake is surrounded by Mackinaw State Forest, which provides miles of trails for snowmobiling, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, hiking and thousands of acres for hunting. About a half hour drive to the fabulous Garland Resort for golfing or cross-country skiing or less than an hour drive to Gaylord, the Golf Mecca of the Midwest.
The house is located in a very private, wooded setting, on a small island with a drivable causeway and bridge. There are three large bedrooms, each having access to outside decks. Also, there is a large deck off the living room with a great view of the sunset over the lake. The front of the house facing the lake contains large windows affording a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding hills from the living room and kitchen areas. The interior of the house is panelled in rustic knotty pine complemented by a cathedral ceiling. There is a nice lakeside deck, which provides access to a great swimming area. We want you to have a great experience here and will be happy to provide you with any information about area fishing, canoeing, hiking, etc. Maximum of six guests during any stay, please, and we have had a long-standing policy of no pets, as some of our regular and repeating guests have allergies.
In the northwest part of Montmorency County, the beautiful Pigeon River State Forest has abundant small lakes and some very decent trout streams as well. Try fishing on the East Branch of the Black River, or the Main Branch of the Black for wild brookies, or the Sturgeon River or the Pigeon River for brookies, rainbows and browns. All are within about a 30 to 45 minute drive from Avery Lake.
For golfers, Garland Resort is probably one of the nicest courses in the area. And of course there are the many fabulous courses in the Gaylord area.
Great dining is found at the Lewiston Lodge, about a 20 minute drive from Avery Lake, between the huge lakes of East Twin and West Twin. Lewiston, Michigan is located on East Twin and has a decent grocery store and additional great restaurants - like the Redwood Steak House.

Cabin in the woods
September 7, 2014
Our stay was pleasant. The fishing wasn't very good when we were there but the lake is very nice. Unfortunately we had bad weather and it rained 3 out of the 5 days we were there but we still managed to find things to do. The cabin is well furnished and supplied with stables and a wide screen TV and is clean.
Relaxing, Resting, and Recovering
August 26, 2014
We always rent a house on a lake or ocean yearly for a week and we usually stay at different places to experience. We rented this place months ago and honestly when the time came to go, I didn't even want to leave my home; never mind vacation. I fell very ill 2 months before the trip, found out my eldest child could not come due to mandatory football practices, and experienced 3 deaths in my family, including my brother, just a month prior to our arrival. Needless to say, I was not in any mood to vacation. When we arrived the lake was so beautiful and the amenities were perfect. My younger children (11-girl, 6-boy) loved having the opportunity to kayak, go out on the boat almost daily, and Cheryl was even sweet enough to show Shelby how to paddleboard. The water is so shallow by the dock that I wasn't having extreme anxiety every time he went near the water (even though I made him wear his life jacket and he was not happy with me). My husband and the children experienced all of it, while I chose to reflect and recover physically and mentally. It was easy to do here. The lake itself is so serene and peaceful, you can see God's love shine through it and into it. Dan and Cheryl were very accommodating, and even though they were right next to us on another lot, we rarely even saw them but I am sure they heard my kids at times (not always the quietest). The house itself was well stocked with everything you may need. The seating may need a bit updating because if you are not careful the couch will hurt your bottom. It got every one of us. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of blankets, towels, etc. I did a lot of reflecting, and this was the perfect place to do that. Thank you Dan and Cheryl for sharing your cottage with us and another pat on the back to my husband who does all of the research and finds little places like this that can ease your soul and get real with your own character. As for fishing, I think my 6 year old son caught the most fish ever on the lake and my daughter caught the biggest so there is plenty of fishing too. My heart and some of my loss has healed thanks to the time we spent here.

Amazing place to relax!
August 13, 2014
What a great place to kick back and relax! Our family of 5 (my husband, myself, 16yo/13yo/7yo sons) had a wonderful week at Avery Lake. Dan was so helpful and informative through emails and once we arrived it was wonderful to meet him and his wife. The house has beautiful lake views and I could have spent the entire time in the rocker on the deck just listening to nature. The guys loved having the kayaks and canoe to explore the lake and my little one enjoyed catching minnows and crayfish while wading in crystal clear water. We didn't catch any fish but had fun trying and exploring the lake's islands at the same time. This home is well stocked for whipping up any meal. The beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows and blankets. If you love games and puzzles, they are provided too! We could not have asked for a better fit to spend time as a family without the intrusion of "real life" during our first trip to Michigan. Thanks to Dan and Cheryl for sharing there little cottage on the lake!
The Most Beautiful Lake We've Seen In Michigan
August 7, 2014
Clear, warm, unpopulated and remote, the perfect lake for our vacation. Our family of five really enjoyed our time on and around this pristine lake. The charming house was perfect for our needs. Our generous hosts were very easy to deal with and thoughtful to the needs of 1st time, out of town visitors. Our trip down the AuSable was a highlight of the week. Seeing Hinkman's very full parking lot on our way out of town made us very happy we chose mid-week for that adventure. Neighboring with a Bald Eagle (1st time sighting for the kids) was another highlight. My wife & I use to trip in the BWCA & Quetico Parks of northern MN and Ontario. We had a challenging goal for this vacation. We sought a lake as untouched and pristine as those we loved in those parks but with creature comforts for the kids. It also had to be a reasonable drive from home. I was not confident such a place existed. Score!! This was a perfect fit for us and we hope to be able to return someday.

Was a great retreat to get away from everything for a week! Everything was very clean and the house was just as described. The provided kayaks, canoe, and paddleboards were all great extras and the swimming area by the dock was extremely kid friendly! Lake water was fresh and clear!
Great up-north get-away!

2 couples in their 50's, and 2 young women in their 20's. The weather was cool and damp early in the week, strange for July. We brought some movies for our indoor times. Especially loved the kayaks and the paddle-board. Kitchen and bath are well-stocked. Could have used some more comfy seating for our party of 6 for indoor times (2 easy chairs and a couch.... someone always had to use the floor or a hard chair). Clean and comfortable otherwise. Good shopping for groceries in Lewiston. We did a day-trip to Mackinac Island.

This was just what the doctor ordered! We've never stayed at this property or this lake. We were presently surprised by how well the home/cabin was outfitted. Beautiful and very quiet setting. We'll be back.
Pleasant, Farly Remote Place to Stay
September 15, 2013
The house on Avery Lake is comfortable and the scenery is lovely. The owner provides a canoe, three kayaks and a 12' fishing boat. Though information about the lake mentions pike, walleye and perch, a local fisherman told me that he usually only takes pike in the Spring and does not catch walleye, but the lake boasts a good bass population (especially smallmouth). The information the owner provided was helpful. Follow his directions - not your GPS, which will take you down sandy two-track roads at speeds to 20 mph. The owner will ask you to compost food scraps (something we were happy to do) and to take your trash with you or to the local transfer station. You'll want to bring bedclothes and towels. Take a good book for the times you're not on the lake. It's a great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Thank you for renting your home to us. We had a wonderful week. Peace and quiet was what we were looking for, and we found it on Avery Lake. And such a beautiful lake. The view is so pretty and it must be gorgeous in autumn. Your house was nice and clean, with plenty of room to stretch out. Practically perfect!

Relaxing Lakefront Vacation!
July 24, 2013
We truly enjoyed our stay at the beautiful Avery Lake Cottage. From the secluded drive to the cottage, we knew we were in for a treat. Beautiful sunrise and sunsets, warm and clean water, had everything that we needed and MORE. I even made friends with the Chipmunks. Canoeing and kayaking with the loons and quiet evenings on the deck were amazing. We had a wonderful time, miss it already and will be sure to be back. Thank you so much.
Beautiful and peaceful stay!

Enjoyed our stay! The lake view is incredible! Everything we needed was supplied! We loved s'mores at the fire pit at night! No WiFi and cell phone connection was tricky! Redwood Steakhouse in Lewiston is awesome!

Relaxing, serene, peaceful
July 17, 2012
We stayed at Avery Lake for a week in July and loved it. The weather was great and the lodging was wonderful. The bed, bath, kitchen, and all amenities were clean and comfortable in a rustic environment. We enjoyed the kayak, canoe, and rowboat everyday because the lake is clean, clear and not cluttered with jetskis and motorboats. The fishing was not so good but the views and sunsets were great. We also had our bikes and enjoyed the trails. It is far enough away from towns and noise to really relax so just enjoy the natural beauty in a comfortable A frame in the woods. The owners were gracious and helpful, and we had a wonderful vacation at Avery Lake.

Lets start by saying that all my stress from the hustle of the city went away right as we arrived. The little ones loved the fishing & swimming as did I and my father-in-law despite the kids had better luck at fishing than we did. Really enjoyed the beautiful house & great weather, eventhough the wife was 8 months pregnant and left a day early because of the heat had a great time. Loved sitting on the deck in the morning having coffee and watching the loons go back & forth with tgeir babies. Thanks go out to Dan & his wife had a great time!

From the moment we arrived ~ we knew that we'd found the right vacation home, and that the description provided was wholly accurate. Peaceful, quiet, remote. Nature and the lake right outside the door. Calm cool winds carried the sound of the loons both morning and evening. Whether we were wading in the lake, canoeing/kayaking around the island, fishing in the lake or any of the nearby streams...this was a retreat to nature that even an ardent outdoorsman could appreciate. If you're looking to "get away" from it all, then you really can't do better than Avery Lake.

Secluded Weekend Getaway
April 26, 2011
I was looking for a secluded place on a lake to take my girlfriend for a surprise trip where I planned on proposing to her. Dan (the owner) took the time to open up the cabin early and have everything up and running by the time we arrived. Accomidations were wonderful and I had no complaints other than the weather being a little colder than I had hoped. We definitely enjoyed our stay and it will be a location that my new Fiance' and I remember for the rest of our lives.

This was a nice place in a beautiful natural setting. The owners were very accommodating. My son and I each caught a smallmouth bass in the 20" class on the surface with our fly rods. Very fun!! Thanks!

Paradise in Michigan
July 9, 2005
We have been vacationing in Michigan for the past few years and have always had beautiful weather and lots of fun. But this past vacation was the best. This home is absolutely spectacular. Waking up each morning and having cofee on the deck overlooking a beautiful lake. The sunrises and sunsets were breathtaking. It was peaceful and fun for all. My children had a wonderful time in the water on their rafts and fishing. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation spot this is it.
We have been renting for ten years and our guests have been very satisfied. We keep a Guest Comment Book on site and invite guests to share their thoughts, experiences, etc.
Frequently Asked Questions
Best time is late May to early June. There is usually a mayfly hatch that takes place during the first week of June (hexigenia limbata) and bass go absolutely nuts over just about any dry fly presented to them. As the water warms, fishing can still be good. I have to say that that for consistently good bass fishing, consider bringing a fly rod, and dry fly patterns between size 16 and 12. Hopper patterns work great. You can take bass all the way up to early to mid September on dry flies. If you use lures, Rapalas, Mepps spinners, and top waters work well. Early in May, just after ice-out, is best time for large pike, and of course Daredevils can be good at that time of year, but you have to have patients, as pike are not as prolific in the lake as bass.
There are many high-quality golf courses located within easy driving distance. There are several rivers in the area great for canoeing, such as the Au Sable, Pigeon, Black, Sturgeon, and a there are smaller streams great for trout fishing, like Hunt Creek, Gilchrist Creek, Canada Creek, East Branch of Black and others.
Bring your mountain bikes for almost unlimited two-track trails through the state forest land that surrounds the lake.
Cell phone reception can be tricky, but most people are able to make and receive calls. You may have to walk around the property a bit to get a strong enough signal. Usually, out on the front deck, or on the lakeside deck, are areas where the signal is the strongest. There is no land-line phone that serves the premises.
Unfortunately, we have no internet service. The phone company does not provide DSL to such a remote location. Nor is there any cable service available for internet. However, I can usually get a weak signal on my smartphone and with patients I can use the internet in this manner. Additionally, what seems to work better is to use a cellphone as a wi-fi hotspot for purposes of using a laptop. There are apps you can get on your cellphone that will serve as wi-fi hotspots, so check with your service provider or check out your phone's app store for these. Of course, I-Pads with their own connection may work as well.
