My husband and I work hard and when we do find the time to get away I do a lot of research for that perfect place. All I can say is KUDOS to David and Mary! This home is beautiful! Every need or want has been thought of in advance to make ones stay comfortable and relaxing. The snow was amazing to watch through the homes wall of windows in the living room as we curled up on the very large couch and drank hot totties. We had a visit from a bull elk and 3 of his females plus a large arrangement of birds from red crested woodpeckers to blue birds and blue jays. It is a photographers dream! We are looking forward to returning to this place in the summer and knowing we will not be disappointed! Thanks again David and Mary for opening your home to us and others!

My family was looking for a quick get away before our kids returned to school. We wanted a place we could relax and play in the snow, cook some great meals and watch the scenery. Elk in The Pines was PERFECT. There was plenty of room for the 4 kids and 4 adults plus our very well behaved dogs. We have stayed in cabins before, but this one was fully stocked with all the extras to make your stay easy. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook and even had some condiments that we forgot. There were electric blankets on every bed and enough blankets and pillows to make sure everyone was warm!! There were sleds for the kids and we wore them out everyday with long walks in the snow. The gas fireplace was nice with no worries about getting wood or smoke in the house. There was plenty of room for dining as we put the kids on the kitchen island and we could eat together as adults!! The owners were just an email or phone call away if we had any questions or concerns. We will be back in the Summer to enjoy another season here!!

I would give this cabin a 6 star if I could. We went for the second time and we had a blast again, this time a lot of snow, a White Christmas. I cannot describe the warm feeling you get as soon as you enter the door, the interior decorations are just breathless, such a welcoming atmosphere. Everything you need and more you can find here, all you need to bring is just the food . I really can't think of something that I forgot to take with us on the few days trip away from home, that David and Mary did not have in the cabin. Well, well stocked with everything you need. Cannot wait to go back, now we wanna experience it in the summer, after all the notes left by people that stayed in the summer, I'm sure we will have a great time again. Thank you David and Mary for sharing your wonderfull cabin with us, there's nowhere else I would go for a retreat vacation now, that I've been living at your cabin . Indeed , a home away from home.

The cabin was great and a perfect base for our trips into the forest, including an 85 mile round trip ATV adventure in the rain. It was good to come "Home" to this great cabin and a hot shower after that trip. The owners have supplied the cabin with everything you need to enjoy your stay in the Arizona White Mountains. The entry gate into the forest just yards away from the back porch is super to take a morning or evening walk with your dog. We plan to rent it again, which is the best recommendation I can give.

We had the best time ever! The pictures and glowing reviews on the website do not do the place justice! We went hiking and explored around the area and it is just beautiful. What a wonderful surprise to walk into this delightful home. Clean and well decorated it felt like home. As avid hikers it was also great to have the national forest at our doorstep, it allowed us to get in a quick hike on our first day without the added time of driving somewhere. The area is so quiet and the back deck with its privacy is a dream. We had hoped to see some elk or deer especially upon see many piles of droppings on the property but it was not to be. Maybe next time.

Wonderful Get-a-Way

My family (3 generations) just returned from Elk in the Pines Retreat. The property is lovely and VERY comfortable. This was our first experience at renting a home and we could not have been more impressed. The setting is secluded and peaceful. We were lucky enough to be there during a snow storm which was totally unexpected when we booked the property. It was a beautiful winter wonderland. David and Mary were great to deal with, keeping in touch to make sure everything was going smoothly. David even arranged for a snow plow to get us out on time! The drive from the east valley was much shorter and more beautiful then anticipated. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a trip to the white mountains.

Just so there's no confusion, we aren't in the white mountains but 45 miles north of Payson off of Hwy 87 on top of the Rim at 7000' in the Blue Ridge/Happy Jack area right on the Coconino National Forest.

Every year our extended family rents a cabin in the mountains and we spend a week. This was by far the best cabin we have ever rented. Everything was included. The cabin is beautiful and very practical. Because of the tile we didn't have to worry about the kids or dogs tracking stuff on the carpets. The cabin is beautifully decorated and very family friendly. The hiking, fishing and porch sitting were great. We hope to come back next year for our vacation. We next had a great time and can,t wait to go again next winter. We took our grandkids to pay in the snow. It had snowed 2ft. the weedend before,but most of the snow had melted by the time we got there. we waited all weekend for new snow. The weather channel was calling for a winter strom warning. I was a little nervous about getting snowed in but after got to this great home we found out they had a emergency generater. I felt truly comfortable. This home was truely a joy to stay in. By the way we woke up sunday morning to 6 inches of fresh snow so the kids got to sled and play. thanks to the owners for sharing thier home with others. The Parsons

Great Vacation

We enjoyed "Elk in the Pines" with our 2 sons, 2 daughter in-laws & 3 grand children. Adults & children enjoyed staying - plenty to do for all ages. It was very clean & a great "at home" feeling. We stayed for a week and got to see and play in the snow. Sleds were even provided. The Kitchen and every room is well stocked. All you need to bring is tooth brushes, clothes, food and drink.We got our security deposit back within 3 days. Great Vacation. Thank You, David & Mary.

My family and friends stayed at Elk in the Pines for a weekend. The cabin is not only breath-taking, but the amenities are vast. We weren't in need of anything. It was such a relaxing weekend...spending it in comfort with family, friends, and nature. Four small children traveled with us, with no difficulty. The toddlers were able to be enclosed on the spacious patio while we enjoyed the view of the forest. The infants had plenty of room for pack 'n' plays and floor toys. Even our pets had a great time. Our only wish was that the weekend didn't end. If you're looking for a great weekend, go to Elk in the Pines. The owners were very gracious.

We rented the cabin for Mother's Day and had such a wonderful time. The kids got a kick out of the squirrels in the yard and the elk came right up to the cabin! We enjoyed riding our quads on all the trails. The house was beautiful and very comfortable. We will be back!

Perfect Get Away

I rented the cabin for two nights to get away with my children over spring break. The pictures don't do justice to the beauty and comfort we found there. We spent hours just exploring and enjoy the forest around the cabin. In fact, we only ventured out to explore surrounding areas only once. The home is completely stocked with everything you may need so no worries if you forget something small, chances are pretty good you'll find it there. The back porch was my favorite place to be. You can sit there and literally feel your worries melt away. Snuggling up with a blanket at night and looking at the stars was breath taking. Thank you so much for allowing me and my children to share your home. We would love to return and visit this beautiful getaway again in the near future. It has been 32 yrs my husband and I did raise our three childern worked and are good citizens, Never had a vacation with just the two of us. We enjoyed everything about our stay in this beautiful home. Back to nature, We feel so relaxed and refreshed, upon leaving and as I looked back at the home a tear was in my eye I was sadden by having our wonderful relaxing vacation come to an end. My husband had the most relaxing time because everything you needed was provided and He also was sad to have come to an end. We loved this area so much we are thinking of looking into a place of our own. When our daughter spoke to me about this and how She wanted to plan it around her dad's 50th birthday it was hard not to tell him the wonderful news And that this was a birthday he will never forget He has been telling anyone who will listen just how wonderful it has been After 32 yrs we finnally had a vacation alone no work no childern no worries thankyou again for the peaceful wonderful vacation ans to our daughter Shelly who is wonderful to plan this Thank-you Ron and Wanda

What a nice pleasnat stay we had. With the national forest right behind the property it was so easy to go for an early morning and late evening walk. The 3 bedroom cabin/house is beautifully decorated and has everything one could possibly want. We enjoyed grilling on the back porch watching the birds & other wildlife. Our standard poodle was in heaven. We have stayed at over 20 cabins in the last year and would rate this one if not the best we have seen. It really was a place I didn't want to leave and if ever I bought a mountain home this one would be perfect. Plenty of nearby recreation...clear creek being in a nice canyon was our favorite. Lakes and fishing close with miles and miles of trails right off your back porch. Highly recomended!!!!!

What an amazing stay we had! Only there 4 days, but it felt like 2 weeks. We didn't even leave the property, except to go for long walks in the forest. My son had fun feeding the birds and watching them throughout the stay! The dogs were in heaven unsuccessfully chasing the gray squirrels and herding the participating cattle! My husband and I felt incredibly relaxed and forgot to even drink our wine. "If you're lucky enough to be in the mountains, you're lucky enough" Many thanks to you.

We had a delightful, peaceful stay away from the city chaos. It was a wonderful time for my husband and me. We played games, shared the moments and sat in front of the fire place. It was a memory we will never forget. We want to go back...soon! The scenery from the back porch was incredible, and we slept like children on holiday!!! We saw wildlife we didn't know existed! This home has everything you could possibly desire...comfort, cleanliness, privacy, beauty, access to forest and nature at your doorstep. It totally exceeded our expectations! We hated to leave, can't wait to come back and can't thank you enough for making our 8 day stay the best ever!

The cabin is just the right size and has absolutely everything you will need! We loved hanging out on the back deck and being able to access National Forest land right at our finger tips. Thank you so much! We will definitely be staying again.

What a beautiful cabin!! We have two teenage boys, and this was a great getaway for our entire family! We love to off-road, as we have a Rhino, and two dirt bikes, and there's a gate right next to the cabin that goes right out to the National Forest. There were so many awesome trails to take...and at night, we sat out on the beautiful, long patio & enjoyed the weather, and saw an elk on our last night!! I'd HIGHLY recommend this amazing cabin, and look forward to staying again! Lastly, David was great to work with!!

Myke and I had a great time of rest and relaxation at your wonderful home. You two seemed to have thought of everything. We have stayed in other homes and have always seemed to need something that wasn't available, but not at Elk in the Pines! We so enjoyed using your wildlife and bird manuals to identify all the squirrels and birds we saw each day in your back yard--there were so many! We saw lots of ravens, western bluebirds, woodpeckers galore, grosbecks, orioles, a gorgeous Steller Blue Jay, finches, Arizona squirrels and one Abert Squirrel. On the last night we were there, we were sitting out enjoying the last bit of sunlight fade away and we saw a gorgeous elk pass by--his antlers were absolutely massive! What a gift from God to see him on our last evening there!

We took some family and friends to enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend and also help my husband with his hunt. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in this beautiful cabin adjoining the national forest. The home was stocked, and clearly marked, with everything we could imagine to make us all comfortable. We felt welcomed and relaxed immediately in this lovely home. As wildlife admirers, we truly enjoyed all the suggestions and information provided for viewing and identifying all the birds, squirrels, etc. that joined us daily in the back yard at the bird baths and feeding stations throughout the property. On our last day we even were blessed with the company for 4 female elk that fed on the hay we left for them to enjoy. We highly recommend this cabin to wildlife lovers and anyone wanting to escape the valley heat. We hope to visit Elk in the Pines again someday.

Review Submitted September 13, 2011 Date of Stay September 9, 2011 My family had a wonderful time staying at Elk In The Pines Retreat, the house is extremely well maintained and had all of he comforts of home and then some. My family was able to travel just a short jaunt from the home on our ATV's and were soon exploring many miles of forest roads. This is truly a place you'll want to try and I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. My family will surely go back for a longer vacation, hopefully in the very near future.
Every year our extended family rents a cabin in the mountains and we spend a week. This was by far the best cabin we have ever rented. Everything was included. The cabin is beautiful and very practical. Because of the tile we didn't have to worry about the kids or dogs tracking stuff on the carpets. The cabin is beautifully decorated and very family friendly. The hiking, fishing and porch sitting were great. We hope to come back next year for our vacation. We stayed at Elk in the Pines fom 6/16 to 6/23/11. We found the Cabin to be located in a beautiful setting that backs to the Coconino Forest. This affords easy access to many trails in the forest for hiking or ATV riding. By its location, the property provides those uncommon chances to see elk, deer, various species of birds, coyotes, etc. One of the finest features of where this cabin is located is the absolutely breathtaking views of the skies at night. The stars are particularly vivid here. The cabin has all the amenities for a comfortable stay and then some. I believe the owners have thought of every eventuality and every form of entertainment. Also, Mary and David (the owners), are helpful, gracious, and easy to reach with questions or problems. Another BIG plus with this rental is the fact that dogs are allowed and what's a vacation without one's furry sidekicks.
Recommended for: Age 55+, Pet owners, Adventure seekers, Girls getaway, Families with teenagers, Romantic getaway

Our family had a wonderful time at Elk in the Pines. We enjoy the outdoors and especially the cool pines of northern AZ. God's creation is certainly mysterious, but so very beautiful and inviting. The house is beautifully decorated and complete with all the necessary items for cooking meals. We loved the ATV trails for hiking and riding our quads. I am sure that we will be back to visit. Elk in the Pines is simply wonderful. We arrived at this lovely location and found that everything in the description and pictures were more than we expected. The house was clean and tidy. The area is peaceful and quiet. Prior to renting the property the owner answered all our questions. We felt completely at home in the relaxing atmosphere and had a marvelous time. We would highly recommend this home to any friend or relative. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. Our son expressed the desire to rent the home for a weeks vacation sometime in the future.
