Area Description
This is Hawaii's big island lush green side (Big island has all the climatic zones known on the planet)! The big island is often referred to as "the most Hawaiian of islands", "the orchid island" and has two active lava vents one flowing into the Pacific. Our home in Papai'kou is at the beginning of the famed Hamakua coast, so-called "God's country". Onomea scenic drive loop which slowly meanders through botanical gardens along the coast is a mile away and a must see. Stop and hike a short trail, visit the Botanical Gardens, and in winter watch the whales playing offshore. Stop for smoothies or pick up wild passion fruit along the roadway. Two miles towards town is the east side's premier surfing beach, Hono'lii, hosting tournaments and everyday daredevils. There is even a quiet stream to swim in. Speaking of swimming: a short walk from our house puts you in a perfect fresh water swimming area! Cool. The farmer's market, biggest in the state is but three miles away along with movie theaters, restaurants, and lots of local color. This is just a few of the delights that await you.
