Luxury Hollywood Hills Estate with Jetliner Views (#45831)
Hollywood Hills, CaliforniaDescription of the Hollywood Hills vacation home rental
Los Angeles Times Home of the Week in 2009, this is a trophy house. Completed in 2007 on a rare undeveloped knoll in The Oaks of Los Feliz, and commanding the panorama from the Observatory to the ocean, this is the house that lets you know you have arrived. Drive through the massive gate worthy of Montecito, into a motor court for 8 cars, and enter the world of La Serena.
La Serena is the latest from Offenhauser/Mekeel Architects, creating an authentic microregionalist masterpiece with every tile, door knob, window, and cabinet made to the standards of 1930’s Spanish craft and design. Outdoors the broad lawn, vibrant bouganvilla, and the gleaming blue sheen of a 3 sided infinity edge pool stretch across the panorama.
Step inside, your breath is taken away by a panorama centered on Downtown. Turn right, a panorama of Hollywood, Century City, and the ocean. Upstairs, you see vignettes of the Hollywood sign and the Observatory. It seems as if some giant arranged the City itself for classic Hollywood movie shots here-- not that the house was built to capture these jaw-dropping views.
The ground floor spaces are sweeping, with a massive open living room and dining room, and a kitchen combined with a comfortable breakfast room and den. In a pioneering kitchen design, the room feels like a sitting room with fine furniture. Most of the storage is tucked behind doors in two large pantries, so finally a kitchen be a room that is lived in, rather than being a cabinet showroom.
Upstairs are two wings. The Master Bedroom suite says “you have arrived”, with a head-on view of the downtown skyscrapers. An octagonal bathroom showcases a freestanding pedestal sinks and a central tub, which allows bathing with views out two sets of French doors. Two other bedroom suites are in the bedroom wing.
The house seems to have a patina of age. Low slung simple tile roofs; unadorned plaster walls; simple wood doors, windows, and floors. But real estate agent Barry Sloane says: “Don’t think “old”. This home has the built-in espresso machine, the “touch of a button” screening room, the house-wide sound system, the remote controlled fireplaces, a 3 sided infinity pool. You get the best of today’s modern living—a completely open plan, great entertaining, flinging all the doors open and enjoying life indoors and outdoors—that’s all here. Michael Mekeel is a rarity. He just always puts more into a house.”
Architect Michael Mekeel says he is a “microregionalist”, recapturing a lost art of high artistic achievement in homes built in their local regional style. He finds a deep truth in the Spanish Revival of the 1930’s in the Los Feliz Oaks neighborhood. When newly built, this neighborhood was knit together by drawing on a shared heritage. Then, regional style homes were built by the city’s best-trained architects and knowledgeable master craftsman.
