On the island are 3 pleasant parks right on the beach: Bayfront Park to the north in the town of Anna Maria; Coquina Beach down south in Bradenton Beach; and Manatee County Public Beach less than a mile away in the middle of the island at Holmes Beach. Tennis courts and a small golf course can also be found on the island, along with shops and restaurants of every description. For chic shopping and dining south of the island, head to St. Armand's Circle 20 minutes away just past Longboat Key.

One of the great bargains on Anna Maria is a free trolley (yes, free!). It runs the length of the island, making dozens of stops, and comes along every twenty minutes from early morning to late evening. There's no need for a car once you settle in!
But if you do wish to explore the area, there are many exciting things to see and do. Sarasota, 30 minutes away, is a center of Florida culture. There you can enjoy good book stores, the world-class Ringling Art Museum, theater, ballet, opera, music of all kinds, and first-run independent films at the Burns Court Cinema. For family activities, there's Jungle Gardens, the Pelican Man Bird Sanctuary, the Mote Marine Laboratory, and the gorgeous Selby Botanical Gardens.
In Bradenton (10 minutes away) is an excellent art, science, and natural history museum that all members of the family will enjoy, the South Florida Museum. Also in Bradenton is the De Soto National Memorial Park, where the ruthless Spanish conquistador, Hernando de Soto, first landed in this area. Bradenton, like Sarasota, has several theater companies and first-rate cineplexes for drama and movie lovers.
Walk or bike just 5 minutes on paved boardwalk or kayak to top rated Robinson's Nature Preserve. Paved trails lead to incredible mangrove trails. Walk or kayak along the Perico Bayou.
