Area Information
Ein Kerem
Luminous olive trees and pink and green almond trees adorn the streets and slopes of the ancient village of Ein Kerem, located on the western side of Jerusalem. The history of this village mirrors the history of Jerusalem. In earliest times it was an agricultural settlement: its name means "Spring of the Vineyard. "
The Chirstian tradition maintained by the many churches in the vicinity relates that John the Baptist was born in Ein Kerem . The Gospels tell that following the Annuciation, the Virgin Mary visited her pregnant cousin Elizabeth in EIn Kerem. Another tradition holds that "Mary's Well" was the meeting place between the Mary and Elizabeth; the mosque which was built above this well signifies that its location is of importance to the Islam tradition too . Seven synagogues representing different far-flung communities have been built in the village and they similarly attest to the cultural mix that has characterized the village since 1948.
The ancient stone buildings, crowded alleyways, courtyards with trees heavy with the fruits of the Holy Land preserve the unique atmosphere of this village. The town center, however, includes modern coffee shops, restaurants and pubs, a music center and a museum dedicated to the Biblical period. Artists, potters and other artisans and craftsmen live and work within the village and market their works here.
Ein Kerem is situated along the slopes of the meandering Soreq Stream which collects and drains the rainfall of the Jerusalem Hills. It is an excellent base for hikes and bike trips to the various springs, limestone caverns and even dinosaur tracks in the area

Excellent & Fabulous.

Normally we stay in Hotels when we go to Israel, this year we decided on a holiday let and thrilled that we did. I found a holiday cottage in Ein Kerem, what a beautiful place, the location was sublime, and the cottage was perfect. The owner’s brilliant. The location of the cottage is excellent overlooking the village, and the valley of Ein Kerem. The views are stunning, especially the Church of John the Baptist, a beautiful historical building, just one of many beautiful buildings. The cottage has been totally renovated to a high standard and is fully equipped, but still retains its original charm and beauty, it’s very spacious and spotlessly clean, it has a balcony that runs the length of the cottage which was excellent for outdoor dinning. The owners were wonderful, we arrived to find Yona had filled the place with fresh fruits, dried fruits, juice, yogurt biscuits, milk, different coffees, a selection of teas, cereal, nuts, and a lovely bottle of wine, which was more than welcoming after a long journey. Yona, Moshko, and their family looked after us so well, we felt like part of the family, they took us to many different places, and also to meet many different people, people we would never had got to meet otherwise, it was an amazing time, spent with amazing people. We can’t thank them enough. Ein Kerem is a historical beautiful place; it is nestled at the bottom of Mount Orah in the Judean Mountains, and only a short bus ride away from the Old City. As for the village of Ein Kerem, John the Baptist was born here, it’s a place of immense character, and offers many fascinating experiences, from the lovely stone houses, beautiful churches, and narrow alleyways, artists, art galleries and lovely restaurants. The inhabitants of the village are very welcoming, and very friendly, I think they have worked very hard over the years to preserve this lovely place. The Israeli government say Ein Kerem is the Jewel in Israel’s crown, I couldn’t agree more, we had a very special time, and it’s excellent.

the jewel of jerusalem

I rented this property for five weeks July/August this past summer. It was my fifth visit to Israel. There is so much to share about my stay yet I will highlight some of what i need to say: The cottage is unique, comfortable, clean, and very special. The kitchen is fully equipped, the living room spacious, the bedroom incredibly comfortable, and the bathroom also perfect with tub/shower. There is a porch/patio with table/chairs and hanging chairs where I spent many nights and days. The cottage is made of stone and during this hot period it was incredibly cool and I did not use the air conditioner as it was not necessary. Upon arriving the refrigerator was stocked with yogurt, fresh fruit, milk, granola, dried fruit, cookies, and wine. All of this is incredible enough yet the best part remains--Yona and Moshe, the hosts and owners of the cottage are not only accommodating they took us touring and to the market!!!!! They are some of the kindest people I have ever met. The location, Ein Kerem, is a MUST do!! This cottage was perfectly situated to so much!! An easy highway access to Tel Aviv as well as an easy ride to Jerusalem, it is situated very close to so much!!! I will always stay in Ein Kerem when I visit again!! Please check this out!! You will NOT be disappointed!!

best of both worlds

beautifull, relaxing and private well situated 15 minutes to the old city and bustle of jerusalem can't get better. Only complaint is that more than two you have to be good friends or family. Mosik ans Yona are wonderful caring people.Wish I could have stayed longer.
