Description of the Kailua Kona vacation cabin rental
Lova Lava Land Eco-Resort is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in staying in creative off-the-grid accommodations! Our 3 acre property is designed as a fun learning experience in life on an old lava field - full of beautiful shady ohia trees, vast ocean views (of the southernmost point in the USA), and creative communal areas great for socializing and relaxing.
We offer a beautifully decorated yurt and several renovated Volkswagen camper buses as sleeping accommodations. For communal use is a bamboo and lava decorated compost toilet, an outdoor shower built out of lava rock from the premises, a gazebo-covered communal kitchen, and a lava rock grill with picnic table.
Take our self-guided walking tour of the property to learn about local flora, fauna, and how we have created comfortable off-the-grid systems. Relax in your private area on the property - each accommodation has its own area complete with either a hammock, picnic table, or swing. Whether you are looking for an adventure vacation in paradise, an education in eco-life, or a longer term place to explore the island from, we can promise this isn't just a place to stay - it's an experience!
DETAILS ON OUR ACCOMMODATIONS:
1. Pele's Paradise Yurt: $55/night with significant weekly & monthly discounts. This beautifully designed 'round house' offers a skylight, ocean views, a full sized bed, closet, bean bag chair, and much more! If you haven't tried sleeping in a yurt before, you'll never go back!
2. Volkswagen Camper Bus Sleeping: $35/night with significant weekly & monthly discounts. This is also a fun and comfortable experience for those that reminisce about the 60's, those that wish it were still the 60's, or those that are just curious and want a fun alternative to normal sleeping arrangements. We've rescued & renovated these buses - although they are NON-operational. Each bus has storage space and closets and is priced the same, although each has its own character and even name!
DETAILS ON AMENITIES:
Our philosophy is "roughing it smoothly." Expect something like camping but be pleasantly surprised when we offer MUCH MORE! For communal use is a compost tiolet, outdoor lava rock shower, communal kitchen with utensils/pots to borrow, lava rock grill, and gazebo-covered lounging area with couch and chairs.
Ocean View is a colorful small community 45 miles from Kailua-Kona and 80 miles from Hilo. We've provided a detailed self-tour guide of the area for you, including directions to the MANY beaches in the area (including 2 black sand beaches), the southernmost point in the USA, several state parks, Volcano National Park, local markets, and much more.
We are located between the 77 and 78 mile marker off Highway 11, in the city of Ocean View on the Big Island of Hawaii. Turn towards the ocean on Prince Kuhio Blvd from the main Highway 11 (by the gas station). Make your first left on Bougainvillea then your first right on Kahili Blvd. Our driveway is the first on the right (red road - look for the 92-1237 address sign on the tree).

Our location is unique in that it is situated about 1500 feet above sea level, on one of the largest mountains in the world, Mauna Loa. We feel the weather is ideal compared to other options - you don't get the non-stop sweltering heat that cities like Kailua-Kona and other west coast cities get (although it is nice and sunny most of the time, with passing clouds). Also, you don't get the non-stop rain and humidity of Hilo and Pahoa. Rather, the climate is mostly dry allowing for comfortable outdoor living. The nights cool off (but not too much) so sleeping is comfy with a sleeping bag or comforter. There are passing winds, but nothing like that in the neighboring town of South Point.
The town of Ocean View is small country town and very colorful community full of adventurous souls that love the peacefulness and community-nature of living off-the-grid on an old lava field. You won't find friendlier people anywhere as it's almost rude not to wave at every car you pass on the road. The town has a weekly swap meet (3 blocks away) and often has local concerts, plays, and other community activities open to the public.
There are two main beaches in Ocean View - accessible by hiking or 4x4 car. If you want to drive to a beach, don't worry as you will discover tons of beaches (including 2 black sand beaches) in either direction from town - the first ones starting at about 15 miles away. The #1 tourist attraction on the Big Island, Volcano National Park, is a beautiful 45 minute drive away - and it's not nearly as cold here as staying close to the park, which is 4,000 feet up (brrrr).
Many more exciting tourist and adventure activities are close to Ocean View (too many to list here)! We've prepared a complete vacation guide with pictures and maps, which you can find on our website or once you arrive!
