Oceanfront Luxury on a Budget (#33355)

Kailua Kona, Big Island, Hawaii

Description of the Kailua Kona vacation home rental

Experience Big Island living and dining directly on the water along Alii Drive. Our property has direct access into the ocean; a large private garden with palms, lawns, flowers, surround the property and a lava rock pathway leads out to tidepools. This Hawaiian style beach home, decorated with Pacific and Asian accents, has been in our family since 1962 and was totally up-graded in 2007. There are many homes built directly on the water but few impart the same feeling as does this home with its openness and its easy access into the water for swimming, fishing and snorkeling.

The main living space is upstairs with an open kitchen, dining area, sitting area and outside porch all blended together. From every room are views of the ocean, the mountains and a large, private garden. One can see the ocean while sitting in bed.

The master bathroom with queen bed is upstairs.

Downstairs features two large bedrooms with ocean views, one with two double beds and a second with king bed. Adjoining is a floor-to-ceiling-tiled bathroom with a huge shower, large enough for partying!

Downstairs laundry room features washer, dryer, beach chairs, beach towels, dive masks, fins, hammocks, snorkels, golfclubs and fishing gear.
Experience island luxury with two new bathrooms, wall-to-wall carpeting and bamboo flooring throughout the living areas and granite-topped built-in kitchen.

The home and property include tidepools and old lava flows extending out into the water. From the porch are views 5 miles north to the cruise ships moored in Kailua Bay and 1/2 mile south to Kahalu'u Bay and the Keauhou-Sheraton Beach Hotel. Looking out the kitchen window is a clear mountain view of the extinct volcano Hualalai. Runners pass by our house during the Ironman held each October.

Area Description

This family-owned home lies 4 1/2 miles south of the town of Kailua-Kona directly on the water. It is 12 miles south of the airport. Lawns, native trees, palms, an old Hawaiian well and old Hawaiian walls surround the property. One can walk down the steps from our porch across coral and lava to tidepools and a shelf which drops down into the water. One can pluck off the rocks fresh limpets and sea urchin for their roe from the tidepools. Snorkling above the coral reef off our point is outstanding; the swim down to Kahalu'u Bay along the shoreline is 1/2 mile. Kahalu'u Bay is noted for its colorful variety of fish and sea turtles which forage off the coral and lava. The bay is a snorkeler's dream. Nearby is the tiny blue and white St Peter's Church. Off St. Peter's is excellent board surfing.

The house is a 1/2 mile walk north to White Sands Beach and a 1/2 mile walk south to Kahalu'u Bay.

During the winter months, humpback whales are sighted off our porch. Throughout the entire year, one can watch spinner dolphin, out-rigger canoe paddlers, distance swimmers and local dive boats which head head south to Captain Cook's Monument. In the evening, live Hawaiian music filters through the glows of sunset, as it comes across the waves from the dinner cruise boats which hover off-shore... "South Pacific" has come to our home.

Keauhou Shopping Area, complete with supermarket, theatre, restaurants and gift shops is 1 mile south. Nearby is the Kona Tennis and Racket Club. The 36 hole Kona Golf Club is two miles south of the house.

Beautiful Oceanfront Location, January 1, 2009
By John Thomas (SF Bay Area)
Spending a week in Kona at this house made for an awesome vacation. The location is ideal. It's walking distance between two great beaches on Ali'i Drive, and downtown Kona is just a short car ride away. The beauty of the oceanfront setting cannot be stressed enough. Listening to waves crash into the rocky shoreline and tidepool in front of the house is mesmerizing. The house was very clean and well stocked, with everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. The top floor of the house feels very bright and airy, with large windows and great views. The porch is outstanding. The bottom level feels a bit disconnected, accessible via an outdoors stairway, but it has some nice bedrooms, a gigantic shower, and washer/dryer. Highly recommended!

This traditional Hawaiian house is all about the location and awesome view. Dining out on the lanai for every meal was a special treat for our family. The downstairs bedroom is a bit rustic for some folks but clean and comfortable. The house is well stocked with everything you will need including boogie boards, coolers and plenty of swim fins. Very private and close to town ...you will love it!

 What a find!, June 25, 2008
By Renata (San Diego, California)
This Hawaiian-Style gem on Alii Drive was the perfect place to enjoy Kona. We enjoyed modern amenities - 2 recently remodeled bathrooms and updated kitchen - with the charm of old Hawaii in this gracious house. Great snorkling and swimming are steps away at Kahalu'u (Turtle) Beach and the porch is the best place to enjoy the sunset. We plan to return in the winter to watch the whales migrate past the house.

 Incredibly relaxing, June 25, 2008
By Kate Ertle (Austin, TX USA)
What an amazing location and relaxing home to spend a week with our friends! All the comforts for the men (free internet, SCUBA diving and cocktails on the porch) as well as the women (snorkeling off the front rocks, reading while listening to the waves crash, more cocktails at sunset). We plan on returning soon to this piece of paradise. Mahalo!

The best vacation ever!, April 15, 2008
By Gregory Tyler (Saugatuck, MI USA)
We had the most wonderfull vacation I have had in 30 years, The house is perfect with easy access to the entire Kona coast, and views plus relaxing atmosphere and carefree living! Everything was emaculate and we could want for nothing. This is the way to make a great vacation perfect!. Being on the ocean, we were able to watch Humpback whales breaching from the front porch, dolphins just off the shore, and sea turtles up on the tidepools just in front of the house. Perfection!
