Area Description

Within five minutes drive of Glenboy you can choose from the Loughcrew megalithic cairns, on the highest point in Meath, woodland walks (ranging from 1 to 13 miles) in the 365 hectares of Beech plantation at Mullaghmeen forest or renowned fishing/boating lakes such as Lough Sheelin.

Glenboy is located adjacent to the lakeland districts of Meath, Westmeath and Cavan. Hundreds of lakes in beautiful rural surroundings are home to trout, bream, roach, rudd, hybrids, pike, tench, carp and perch. Oldcastle is ringed by renowned stillwater lakes such as Lene (with Blue Flag status) and Bane and Lough Sheelin famed for its mayfly fishing.   The county of Meath is a treasure trove of archeological and historical sites. In the Boyne Valley are Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth with their Neolithic tombs and monuments. The Hill of Tara was a centre of pagan workship from 2100 BC and seat of the High Kings of Ireland until the 11th Century. The Norman castle at Trim constructed by Hugh de Lacy in 1172 was visited by King John in 1610 and 400 years later by Mel Gibson for the filming of Braveheart. A short drive takes you sites such as Fore Abbey in County Westmeath with its 'seven wonders' or the the town of Kells famed for St. Columba's 6th monastery and the Book that bears its name now on display in Trinity College Dublin.
    
Glenboy is also ideally situated for exploring heritage and nature landmarks on the Meath Heritage Trail, Boyne Valley Drive etc. Oldcastle is also situated on the Tain Trail. This trail is 365 mile drive and cycling route along the route taken in the epic tale of An Tain Bó Cuailgne (the Cattle Raid of Cooley) by armies of the legendary Queen Maeve of Connaught in their efforts to capture Ulster's famous Brown Bull of Cooley. A growing range of of award-winning restaurants complement traditional pubs that withstand the passage of time.

Heritage and historical information is available from Kells Heritage Centre and Cavan County Museum in Ballyjamesduff, while the area offers a range of gardens and historic buildings open to the public including, Loughcrew Gardens, Tullynally Castle and Belvedere House .
 
Horses are synonomous with Meath. A range of venues offer horse-riding including, lessons and racing. Race meetings include the Fairyhouse Irish Grand National horse-racing festival, Navan, Laytown strand races.
 
Festivals are a feature of the Irish summer, covering arts, music and heritage themes. As well as Le Cheile, Oldcastle Arts and Music festival, festivals in the area include Witness festival, O 'Carolan Harp Festival, Moynalty Steam Threshing Festival, Midlands Festival, Loughcrew Garden Opera as well as a range of traditional music festivals, etc.
