Description of the Korcula vacation apartment rental
The upper 3 bedroom non-smoking apartment in an updated traditional Mediterranean stucco 2-apartment house has fenced garden of orange and pomegranate trees and grape vines. It is ideal for a young family on a budget - plenty of safe play space. It is also perfect for seniors - close to everything. French doors lead to railed balcony for dining and grilling. Situated to capture mountain breezes from the height of the island and coastal range; with cool ceramic tile flooring designed to reduce solar heating in summer, it remains comfortable when others swelter from the greatest number of sunny days of all Croatian islands. Walk 200 m to Riviera for restaurants, shopping, museum (stone age, Greek, Roman, Slavic) and art gallery, and 0.5 Km to ferry for Split. Take the water shuttle from Riviera to public beach - continuous service on the 1/2 hour. Hike to Neanderthal cave (Vela Spila). Take a day trip by public bus, taxi, or car to Korcula City.
Area Information
Situated on the western side of the island of Korcula (Croatia) in a large bay dotted with many tiny islets and surrounded by tranquil inlets, the town of Vela Luka is an oasis of Dalmatian and Mediterranean influences: mild climate, unpolluted sea and air, olive groves, fig trees and the highest number of sunny days per year in Croatia! It is enough off the beaten track to offer wonderful value without sacrificing anything Croatia has to offer. Travel here from Split, the main city in Croatia using the convenient Jadrolinija car ferry (book well in advance to be sure of space). If on foot, just walk half a mile with your rolling suitcase along the pictoresque Riviera, realizing that sauntering is your new speed for everything! Or, should you procrastinate too long to secure space for your car, the alternative route to Vela Luka involves a drive along the lovely winding, mountainous and highly scenic road of the Peljesac peninsula and non-stop service mid-size car ferry at Orebic (8:00 to 20:00) to the eastern end of the island Korcula followed by an easy 40 km drive west to Vela Luka. We love to stop for lunch at Ston and indulge in the locally farmed steamed mussels Dalmatian style with a glass of Plavac, Dingac or other locally grown, award-winning Dalmatian wine. Just throw your head back and breathe - Ahhhh!!! You are really on vacation, just living life as it should be - simple and outstanding, every moment to be savored.

Other Vacation Rental Amenities
Unlike many tourist locations in Croatia, the farmers market conveniently located at the harbor has a well-supplied fish market including the flavorful Adriatic fish "Orada". Famous Neanderthal site 'Vela Spila' can be reached on foot. There is also a museum that ranges from Stone Age through Greek, Roman, and Slavic periods within 1/2 mile. A disco is within 1 mile for teens and twenty-somethings...far enough from the house to not disturb sleep! In summer, every Thursday evening there is sardine grilling at the harbor with various kinds of entertainment such as bands, singing troupes, ethnic dancers, or open air theatre. A mobile phone store at the harbor that provides reliable 3G connectivity. Note that there is a washer but not a dryer in the house. The agency summary indicates both (we couldn't alter the description to be exact). Clothes dry quickly in this dry, warm climate - and smell wonderful from hanging in the sun on the porch. You won't miss not having a dryer!

Frequently Asked Questions
Q:What kinds of activities do you recommend during our stay?
A:Take the little harbor ferry and walk half a mile to terrific snorkeling sites. Or sign up for a few days of PADI skin diving school - they accept youth as well as adults. Pack a lunch and take a day hike such as the climb to nearby Vela Spila Neanderthal cave -dramatic harbor view. Walk across the street and rent a bicycle to tour the village. Or rent a car there and drive to Korcula City, sister city of Dubrovnik at the east end of Korcula. Then drive back and be happy you have a place to park and much, much more reasonable accomodations!
Q:Why do you believe your apartment is a great value?
A:We rehabbed this house that is built in traditional Korcula style to add a second bathroom, each with shower The spacious three bedroom apartment sleeps five. It is unusual to find 2 modern baths in a 2 star property. Having a brand new washing machine available to rent will allow you to pack much lighter than you originally planned (5 Euros/load) - work out access with the keyholder. You have only a short walk to the center at the harbour but are far enough to not be bothered by noise when you want to relax.
Q:What is the most unique thing to visit nearby?
A:The museum has a terrific display of the history of Korcula from the stone age to modern times. The Neanderthal cave from which many of the artifacts stem is one of the major archeological sites in Europe for this human ancestor. Looking out over the Vela Luka harbor from the cave entrance lets you see what they saw.
Q:Are there sand beaches as well as rocky beaches nearby?
A:There are two sand beaches on the island. Others are rocky which makes for more interesting snorkeling. One sand beach is the Vela Luka public swimming area, that has a roped area for children. You can take the little ferry a 200 meter walk from the apartment. It runs every 20 minutes throughout the day. The other is in Lumbarda at the other end of the island. It is bigger and stays shallow further out. You need a car to reach that one.
