Area Info
Our attractive holiday home has been created by the lovingly and painstaking renovation of a large XVII century estate , near the ancient Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Valle, the origins of which date back to the late Middle Ages. The farmhouse, divided into one cottage and four apartments, is set on a panoramic position on the gentle slopes that descend towards the Arno river.

A large garden equipped with tables, chairs, canopies, with (7 x 12 metres) swimming pool with a part for children (3x3 metres) surrounds the compound. All the apartments have been tastefully finished, fully furnished and they have been endowed with TV sat, and their own heating system. Laundry room available for common use. BBQ.

The quiet, hilly, panoramic area is only three kilometres from the beautiful medieval hamlet of Laterina. The lodgings enjoy countryside privacy, close proximity to the attractions and amenities of Arezzo; they are also the ideal base for many excursions to all Central Italy. Firenze, Siena, Cortona, lake Trasimeno and Perugia are not so far away; since there are good motorways and rail links with the rest of Tuscany .The shopping lover will find nearby many outlets of the most famous Italian fashion brands : such as Prada, Gucci, Fendi, D&G ??

The holiday complex of ??Borgo Santa Maria in Valle ??is the ideal place to spend a relaxing holiday all year long. In Tuscany, every season has its own charm. Whether you just want to sit by the pool, or walk along the many trails nearby, or to explore and discover the natural protected areas, or indulge in the cultural and culinary delights offered by this wonderful Region, this lovely country house environment will make your stay a memorable one.
Laterina Arezzo Tuscany Italy (the nearest village to Borgo Santa maria)
Just three km from kilometres from the house is the ancient hamlet of Laterina .The territory where Laterina castle stands to day was inhabited ever since very ancient times, by Etrurian dwellings and then by roman settlements. In 1272 the nearby city of Arezzo took possession of Laterina, important for the high position over the Arno Valley, to hold up the expansion of the Republic of Florence in Valdarno. After a series of ups and downs, a treaty, that sanctioned the defeat of Arezzo, was signed in Laterina (1384), and the hamlet and its territories passed under the rule of the Republic of Florence.Nowadays its historical centre in perfectly preserved and lies on an hill that dominates the Arno plain.

The surroundings ( the places and the area below mentioned are all easily reachable by car from Borgo Santa Maria)

Following different itineraries that could last from 30 min. to 1hr and a half.

Valdarno is the valley that unwinds along the bed of the Arno river, between the Florentine Chianti hills and the Pratomagno mountain.

The territory is crossed by the old Cassia Vetus road (to day is called Setteponti provincial road) that connected the two major Etruscan and
Roman town of Arezzo and Fiesole. The area was conquered by the Florentines, who in the XIII century founded the Terre Nuove ( Terranuova Bracciolini, Castelfranco di Sopra, and San Giovanni Valdarno - the birthplace of Masaccio). The Terrenuove were fortified villages provided with walls and laid out on a typical chessboard plan.
Arezzo is one of the loveliest and less known town in Tuscany and it is worth a day visit. From Arezzo following a road Called Seven bridges ( setteponti)you reach
Ponte a Buriano , where a Romanesque bridge crosses the Arno, quite near Arezzo, and then you follow the road to Loro Ciuffenna ,a medieval hamlet at the foot of the mountain, where the remains of an ancient water mill are still visible; the Romanesque Church of Gropina ( very close to Loro Ciuffenna): this old church is a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture dating to the XI century.

The landscape is extremely varied, from the gentle hills cloaked with vineyards and olive trees, to the dramatic landscape of The Crags ( that many will recognized as the background of the famous Leonardo da Vinci painting "La Vergine delle Rocce").

Pratomagno

(Guests will see its powerful silhouette from Borgo Santa Maria garden)

It is the mountain between Arezzo and Florence, that separates the Casentino area from " the Aretinian Valdarno", the mountain is rich of woods and small villages, and it is possible to walk there following many trails.

The Natural protected parks in the Areas.

Ponte Buriano and Penna - Valle dell'Inferno and Bandella ( just 3 km from the holiday home)

Along the Corse of the Arno river , close to Laterina there are these two beautiful natural oasis.

The wet lands and the morphology created by the river during the centuries , both contribute to this highly diversified habitat ideal for the growth and the reproduction of many different kind of plants and and animal species..

Here you can follow footpaths through woodland, over hills and along the rocky of the valley and discover a still uncontaminated world.

Other natural areas:easily reachable by car from Laterina.
