Loiza, Puerto Rico Travel Tips

Found on the northeast coast of the island, Loiza, Puerto Rico, is a small but beautiful town dating back to 1692. It is a great place to find affordable Puerto Rico vacation rentals and Puerto Rico house rentals. Remember, Puerto Rico is a part of the United States: When visiting from the U.S., you don’t need a passport. However, you might wish to update your vaccinations. Visitors from the mainland should stock up on mosquito repellent and bottled water for a comfortable and safe experience. Aside from these cautions, for those staying in a vacation rental, Puerto Rico is very family-friendly!
Loiza, PR, has six main neighborhoods, known in Spanish as barrios. Some are more popular than others, but each one can provide vacation rentals Puerto Rico visitors will love:
Canovanas: Canovas is known for horse racing and historic buildings, including the circa-1931 residence of the island’s first Puerto Rican governor. It is home to many traditional festivals.
Loiza Pueblo: Loiza Pueblo is the government district. It boasts modern administrative buildings and transportation infrastructure. Few Puerto Rico vacation rentals are found here.
Mediania Alta: Beautiful Mediana Alta lies between the Rio Grande of Puerto Rico and the Rio Herrera. It is near multiple golf courses and beach resorts.
Mediania Baja: Home to a library and art gallery, Mediana Baja is a riverside community on the banks of the Rio Grande. It is popular for its unspoiled beaches.
Torrecilla Alta: A highly sought-after area for vacation homes, Torrecilla Alta curves along the Rio Grande in a quiet part of Loiza. It is a short distance from the historic Old Cane Sugar Mill.
Torrecilla Baja: Steeped in traditional Puerto Rican arts, Torrecilla Baja is a short way from Pinones State Forest. Some of the best vacation rentals Puerto Rico has are situated here!

Loiza has several beaches, including Aviones Beach and Vacia Talega Beach. They are rarely as crowded as similar-quality beaches in the mainland U.S., giving families a chance to relax in peace. Some of the most popular vacation rental properties are near the shore!
Deep in the Pinones State Forest, Pinones Lagoon is a stunningly blue body of water. Kayaking is very popular, and kayaking tours are available for families. Rules in Puerto Rico are different than in the continental U.S., so vacation rentals in Puerto Rico can be very close to the forest.
Named after one of the most important historical families from the area, the Ayala Family Artisan Center is a center of native culture and performance. Dancing, singing in bomba y plena style, and local crafts can often be enjoyed during monthly events here.
The San Patricio Church is one of the oldest churches in Puerto Rico. Built 1654, it’s a stunning example of colonial architecture and the place where many holidays are celebrated.
The Mayombe Carnival takes place in February and has been called the “Mardi Gras of Puerto Rico.” Singing, dancing, partying, and delicious local food are the highlights. The atmosphere can be a bit crowded and rowdy, so keep an eye on young kids, but it’s all in good fun!
In March, San Patricio festivals take place throughout Loiza. These center on religious observances but also include events like parades, salsa dancing, and masquerades. Like many Puerto Rican holidays, you can expect great food to make an appearance.
Later on, in July, the Santiago Apostol Festival honors St. James, one of the patron saints of Loiza. The event begins during the Feast of St. James and continues for several days. Three statues of St. James are venerated on different days, and masked locals represent historical characters.
